In one embodiment, a passive optical network is provided that includes: an optical line terminal (OLT) configured to transmit a plurality of downstream signals into a corresponding plurality of passive optical networks and to receive a corresponding plurality of upstream signals from the plurality of passive optical networks, wherein each downstream signal is separated in wavelength from the remaining wavelength signals, and wherein each upstream signal is separated in wavelength from the remaining upstream signal; a Mux/Demux configured to multiplex the downstream signals from the OLT into a optical fiber and to demultiplex upstream signals from the optical fibers to the OLT; and a splitter configured to split the downstream signals from the OLT to a plurality of optical network units such that each optical network unit receives the plurality of downstream signals.

Passive optical network with wavelength division multiplexing

Disclosed is a single made optical waveguide fiber having a segmented core design. In particular, the core comprises three segments, each having characteristic dimensions and refractive index profile. By proper choice of index profile in each segment, a waveguide fiber is made which has a mode field diameter of about 9.5, low, positive total dispersion over the operating window 1530 nm to 1565 nm as well as effective area greater than 60 &#x3bc;m.

High performance single mode waveguide

Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having alternating segments of positive and negative dispersion and dispersion slope. The relative indexes, the refractive index profiles and the radii of the segments are chosen to provide low total dispersion and dispersion slope. Preferred waveguides in accordance with the invention exhibit a dispersion over the range of 1520 to 1625 nm which at all times has a magnitude which is less than 2, and more preferably less than 1 ps/nm -km. The total dispersion of the waveguide fiber is in the range of about &minus;2.0 to &plus;2.0 ps/nm-km at 1550 nm. The waveguide also features a low polarization mode dispersion.

Low slope dispersion managed waveguide

The present invention provides an optical fiber, comprising a core having an alpha parameter in the range of approximately 2 to approximately 8, a maximum index percent difference between the core and a cladding in the range of approximately 0.3% to approximately 0.5% and a core diameter in the range of approximately 6.0 to approximately 16.0 &mgr;m and a cladding. The optical fiber has a bandwidth of at least approximately 0.6 GHz.km at 850 nm, and is configured for multimode operation at a wavelength less than 1300 nm and single mode operation at a wavelength of at least approximately 1300 nm. The fiber also has significantly reduced intermodal noise. The present invention also includes a method of designing such a fiber, a fiber optic system provided such a fiber and a method of operating a fiber optic system with such a fiber.

Broadband access optimized fiber and method of making

Disclosed is a dispersion shifted optical waveguide fiber having low but non-zero dispersion over an extended wavelength window that includes wavelengths, from 1470 nm to 1625 nm. Waveguide fiber core refractive index profiles exhibit the desired dispersion performance while maintaining resistance to pin array and lateral load bending at least equivalent to standard waveguide fiber. Attenuation over the operating wavelength range is low and zero dispersion wavelength is typically less than 1450 nm.

Dispersion shifted large effective area waveguide fiber

A long haul, broadband DWDM system that has been optimized by the proper selection of the distribution of total dispersion compensation. Dispersion compensation is utilized at both the receiver and transmitter ends. System performance is dependent on the ratio of compensation split between the transmitter and the receiver. A system operated in the nonlinear regime can be compensated to operate with low BER and with reduced penalties due to residual dispersion effects, even when the spread of total accumulated dispersion between the extreme channels in a broadband system exceeds 1,100 ps/nm.

Wavelength division multiplexing systems

Large effective area waveguide fiber

A single mode optical waveguide fiber having a relatively large effective area and low dispersion includes a segmented core having at least two segments each defining a radius, a refractive index profile and a relative refractive index percent. The waveguide fiber also includes a clad layer surrounding and in contact with the core and having a relative refractive index. The refractive index profiles are selected to provide total dispersion at a wavelength of about 1550 nm of within the range of about 11 ps/nm-km to about 14 ps/nm-km, and total dispersion slope at a wavelength of about 1550 nm of within the range of about 0.045 ps/nm -km to about 0.055 ps/nm -km. The refractive index profiles are further selected to provide an effective area greater than or equal to 60 &mgr;m , and attenuation at a wavelength of about 1550 nm of less than or equal to 0.22 dB/km.

Single mode optical waveguide fiber with reduced dispersion

Disclosed is a singe mode optical waveguide fiber having alternating segments of positive and negative dispersion and dispersion slope. The total dispersion of the waveguide fiber is in the range of about &minus;2.0 to &plus;2.0 ps/nm-km at 1550 nm. The waveguide also features a low polarization mode dispersion.

Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having a segmented core design. The core may have two or more segments. The highest refractive index portion of the core is spaced apart from the centerline of the waveguide fiber. The relative index of the first or center segment of the core is negative, where the reference refractive index is taken to be the minimum index clad. This family of core profiles provides effective areas in the range of 110 &mgr;m to 150 &mgr;m in the operating window around 1550 nm.

Waveguide profile for large effective area

A dispersion compensating single mode optical waveguide fiber designed to change the wavelength window of operation of a link from 1310 nm to 1550 nm. The dispersion compensating waveguide fiber is characterized by a core glass region refractive index profile comprised of at least three segments. The segment on the waveguide center has a positive relative refractive index. At least one segment, spaced apart from, the waveguide centerline has a negative relative refractive.

Dispersion compensating single mode waveguide

A single mode optical waveguide fiber having a segmented core designed to provide a large effective area for light transmission. The large effective area reduces waveguide fiber non-linearities. The inventive waveguide is thus suited for transmission of high power signals over long distances. Embodiments of the inventive single mode waveguide including five core segments are given. The large effective area is achieved with essentially no degradation in optical or mechanical performance of the waveguide.

A single-mode optical waveguide fiber designed to limit power penalty due to four wave mixing and a method of making the waveguide is disclosed. Variations in properties, e.g., radius or refractive index, of the waveguide fiber core provide a total dispersion which varies along the length of the waveguide. The algebraic sum of products of length times total dispersion is controlled to a pre-selected value for each waveguide fiber which makes up a system link Proper choice of total dispersion variation magnitude and sub-length results in a system link wherein a signal travels only short distances in waveguide portions having total dispersion near zero. However, the variation of the total dispersion provides a system link which has a pre-selected dispersive effect on the signal over a selected wavelength range. The dispersive effect on the signal can be chosen to be essentially zero. A number of techniques for fabricating DM fiber are also disclosed.
