A system mountable in a host vehicle, configured to operate while the host vehicle is moving in a road environment. The system includes a backward-looking camera with field-of-view behind the host vehicle, a side-looking camera with field-of-view to a side of the host vehicle, a forward-looking camera with field-of-view in front of the host vehicle. A processor is configured to control the cameras, to acquire and store in memory images acquired from the cameras. The processor is configured to detect a target vehicle in the images of a one camera and track a feature of the target vehicle in the images of the other cameras. A traffic violation is declared when a feature of the target vehicle is identified in images of the other cameras.

System and method for detecting and recording traffic law violation events

A system for detecting and recording real-time law violations having an array of wide and narrow angled cameras providing a plurality of images of a substantially 360&#xb0; field of view around a law enforcement unit, a recording unit for recording said images, an analyzing unit for detecting a law violation, a permanent storage unit for permanently storing a plurality of images of a law violation event and a reporting unit for issuing citations.

Determining that a trailing vehicle is tailgating a lead vehicle while both are traveling on a lane of a road. A camera captures a timed sequence of image frames at known capture times of the lead vehicle and the trailing vehicle. Images of the trailing vehicle and the lead vehicle are selected from the captured image frames to provide respective image coordinates of the trailing vehicle and the lead vehicle. Multiple world space differential distances between the trailing vehicle and the lead vehicle are computed responsive to the image coordinates in the selected image frames. A tailgating metric responsive to the known capture times of the selected image frames and the computed world space differential distances is determined.
