A system for projecting an image of an object on an image plane can include a beam splitter that outputs a first image beam and a second image beam in response to an input image beam, wherein the input image beam comprises an image of an object. The system can also include a Fourier transform lens to transform the second image beam into a Fourier image beam. The system can further include a bucket detector that is aligned in a light path of the Fourier image beam. The bucket detector asserts a control signal in response to detecting a threshold number of photons with an elevated probability of having a high spatial frequency within a timeframe and to de-assert the control signal in response to detecting less than the threshold number of photons with an elevated probability of having a high spatial frequency within the timeframe.

Projecting an image of an object on an image plane

A turbulence-free CCD camera system with nonclassical imaging resolution, for applications in long-distance imaging, such as satellite and aircraft-to-ground based distant imaging, utilizing an intensity-fluctuation correlation measurement of thermal light. The proposed camera system has the following advantages over classic imaging technology: (1) it is turbulence-free; (2) its spatial resolution is mainly determined by the angular diameter of the light source. For example, using sun as the light source, this camera may achieve a spatial resolution of 200 micrometer for any object on Earth. 200-micrometer resolution is insignificant for short distance imaging, however, taking a picture of a target at 10-kilometer, a classic camera must have a lens of 90-meter diameter in order to achieve 200-micrometer resolution. Unlike a classic camera, the proposed turbulence-free CCD camera system has adequate spatial resolution zoom a long distance and still distinguish the objects within a small area, even with a small lens.

A system and method for clock synchronization and position determination using entangled photon pairs is provided. The present invention relies on the measurement of the second order correlation function of entangled states. Photons from an entangled photon source travel one-way to the clocks to be synchronized. By analyzing photon registration time histories generated at each clock location, the entangled states allow for high accuracy clock synchronization as well as high accuracy position determination.

High quantum efficiency (.gtoreq.5%) ultrafast (.ltoreq.100 picosecond) and broad band (30 KeV to 80 KeV for medical application) X-ray photo-electron cathode, high gain X-ray real time image intensifier and portable low intensity real time projection type X-ray imagescope use new vacuum photo-electron devices. A new type X-ray photo-electron cathode has a specially designed alkali halide electron emission layer that makes possible high quantum efficiency, high speed and broad band X-ray photon detection. An X-ray photo-electron cathode followed by a direct coupled micro channel plate and an output phosphor display screen form a new type panel shaped direct view X-ray intensifier tube which can have both high spatial resolution (.gtoreq.10 lp/mm) and high gain (.gtoreq.10.sup.4). The thickness of this panel shaped disc X-ray intensifier can be less than 1 cm. A portable real time projection X-ray imagescope which employs this new type X-ray intensifier and other devices (small x-ray tube, small built-in high voltage power supply) can be widely used for medical, industrial and security applications.
