A dedicated IP-based wavelength routing/signaling control plane for optically switched network, is provided. The IP-based control plane is an out-band routing/signaling mechanism and does not require optical-electrical-optical (OEO) conversion. The control plane can accommodate the various network topologies of the data plane and if one of the supervisory, or control channel fails, the IP-based control plane can re-route the traffic to destination. Using non-broadcasting addressable protocols the control plane selects a different path to re-direct the control information without declaring the whole communications trail down and without affecting the client traffic over the data path.

Supervisory control plane over wavelength routed networks

This present invention provides generic and flexible methods to represent optical bandwidth and service interfaces for optical label switching networks. Most importantly, bandwidth may be represented simply at various granularity levels and in various combinations. This simplicity will greatly help in design and implementation of protocols for use in optical label switching networks.

Method of optical network bandwidth representation for optical label switching networks

A technique for routing data within an optical network having a plurality of network nodes is disclosed. In one embodiment, the technique is realized by receiving data at a first network node via a first optical signal having a first wavelength. The first wavelength corresponds to a first optical frequency, and the first optical frequency is mapped to a first binary representation. The first binary representation is divided into a first plurality of fields, wherein at least one of the first plurality of fields corresponds to a routing label in a first label stack. A top routing label in the first label stack indicates a second network node. Based at least partially upon the top routing label, the data is transmitted from the first network node to the second network node via a second optical signal having a second wavelength. The first wavelength may be either the same as or different from the second wavelength.
