A photonic module, comprising a first waveguide; a second waveguide, disposed on an opposing side of the first waveguide to a substrate; and, a coupling section. One of the first waveguide and the second waveguide is formed of crystalline silicon. The other of the first waveguide and the second waveguide is formed of amorphous silicon. The coupling section is configured to couple light between the first waveguide and the second waveguide. Such a silicon photonic module has enhanced coupling and transmission properties in contrast to conventional modules.

Photonic module and method of manufacture

A photonic buried interposer for converting light between a first optical mode of a first optical component and a second optical mode of a second optical component, the second optical component being larger than the first optical component; the buried interposer comprising a bi-layer taper, the bi-layer taper comprising: a top device layer comprising an upper tapered waveguide; and a bottom device layer comprising a lower tapered waveguide; wherein the upper tapered waveguide extends from a first end for coupling to the first optical component to a second end for coupling to the second optical component; and the lower tapered waveguide starts from an intermediate location between the first and second ends and extends from the intermediate location to the second end.

Photonic buried interposer

A waveguide structure and a method for splitting light is described. The method may include optically coupling a first waveguide and a second waveguide, where the optical coupling may be wavelength insensitive. The widths of the first and second waveguides may be non-adiabatically varying and the optical coupling may be asymmetric between the first and second waveguides. A gap between the first and second waveguides may also be varied non-adiabatically and the gap may depend on the widths of the first and second waveguides. The optical coupling between the first and second waveguides may also occur in the approximate wavelength range of 800 nanometers to 1700 nanometers.

Asymmetric optical power splitting system and method

Structures for managing light polarization on a photonics chip and methods of forming a structure for managing light polarization on a photonics chip. A single-mode waveguiding structure is formed that includes a first waveguide core region and a second waveguide core region positioned above the first waveguide core region. The second waveguide core region includes a first section, a second section connected to the first section, and a third section connected to the second section. The second section has a first width at an intersection with the first section and a second width at an intersection with the third section. The second width is greater than the first width. The first and second waveguide core regions contain materials of different composition.

Structures for managing light polarization states on a photonics chip

A splitter. In some embodiments, the splitter includes an input waveguide; a first output waveguide; a second output waveguide; a first internal waveguide, connected to the input waveguide and to the first output waveguide, and a second internal waveguide, coupled to the first internal waveguide and connected to the second output waveguide. The splitter may be configured, when fed, at the input waveguide, power in a fundamental mode of the input waveguide or power in a first order spatial mode of the input waveguide: to transmit at least 80% of the power in the fundamental mode to the first output waveguide, and to transmit at least 80% of the power in the first order spatial mode to the second output waveguide.

Optical mode splitter

Structures for polarization filtering and methods of forming a structure for polarization filtering. A waveguiding structure has a first waveguide core region including a first plurality of bends, a second waveguide core region including a second plurality of bends laterally spaced from the first plurality of bends by a gap, and a third waveguide core region including a third plurality of bends positioned beneath the gap. The first waveguide core region and the second waveguide core region contain a first material. The third waveguide core region contains a second material that differs in composition from the first material.
