Key performance indicators R-KPI are received based on measurements from the resources, of contributory services contributing to a corresponding key performance indicator KPI of the corresponding superordinate service. A selection () is made of the received R-KPIs which correspond to the normal operation of the superordinate service and a characteristic division is generated () of relative contributions of the R-KPIs to the KPI of the corresponding superordinate service for the times that the service was operating normally. This can be used as a basis for identifying differences with other R-KPIs to determine anomalies in behavior of contributory services for root cause analysis or in managing the network. Convergence evaluation and validation can be used to improve accuracy of the characteristic division.

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for event analysis in a communication (telecommunication or computer) system. In particular, the invention relates to a method and apparatus for analyzing events representing activity in the communication system. Embodiments provide a progressive technique for the analysis of the operation of a communication system. Embodiments provide a bottom-up approach by first detecting burst of events, and establishing causal relationships between events and system operation reports using detected event burst records representing the occurrence of burst behaviors in events in a system. Based on the causal relationships found, causes of a change in system operation may be identified by determining parameters associated with events of an event burst relevant to the change in system operation.

Method and apparatus for analysis of the operation of a communication system using events

In a telecommunications network, information about events that occur at nodes () is sent to event-based management applications () in operations and maintenance servers (). Event reports () comprising such event information are replaced or accompanied in data packets by event summaries (). The summaries () can be used to route the data packets to the correct event-based management application () with less processing time and resources than if the event reports () are used for routeing, because information about the events can be obtained from the summaries () more easily than from the event reports (). Routeing using the summaries () may be done in a fast path. Some event-based management applications can use the summaries () instead of the event reports (), which can also save processing time and resources, and such event-based management applications may be performed in a fast path.

A method for determining location of a failure causing degradation of a service in a mobile communications network is disclosed. Service trajectories for the mobile terminals are determined () by correlating earlier obtained movement trajectories () of individual mobile terminals with service session records of the mobile terminals. In the next step distributions of the service trajectories of mobile terminals with degraded service are determined and then a network element around which the service trajectories converge is identified () as the location of the failure. Service problem diagnosis for mobile wireless networks

The present invention relates to a method of quality of service monitoring of at least one service in a communication network. The method comprises a first and a second modes. The first mode comprises detecting degradation in quality of service in a communication network by selecting () a set of terminal service sessions for providing terminal service session reports; collecting () terminal service session information from the selected terminal service sessions; and determining () the quality of service in the communication network from the terminal service sessions monitored in the first mode. Method and apparatus for quality of service monitoring of services in a communication network

A network node comprising at least one network interface the network node arranged to form network links to other network nodes through the or each network interface, each network link being to a neighboring one of the other network nodes, the network node arranged to determine whether data transmitted over the links to the relevant neighboring network nodes is successfully received. Should the network node make a first determination that data sent over a given network link to a neighboring node has not been successfully received, the network node temporarily disables the entry for that network link in a memory for a period of time, such that the network node does not send data to the neighboring node over the given network link during the period of time, but then subsequently re-enables the entry after the period of time has elapsed. Should the network node make a subsequent determination that data sent over the given network link to the neighboring network node has not been successfully received, the network node deletes the entry from the memory.

Monitoring broadcast and multicast streaming service

User equipment uses traces of service primitives of one or multiple service sessions to automatically discover a service sequence. Service sequences are refined by analyzing sequences captured during multiple sessions of the same service. A daemon receives from a plurality of user equipment the observed service sequences. The sequences from different user equipment are aggregated. The daemon sends back the refined service sequences to user equipment. User equipment sends a problem report to the daemon and/or a service monitor in the case of a service failure. The daemon or the service monitor aggregates such problem reports and discovers the causes of service degradations.

Service monitoring and service problem diagnosing in communications network

A method of monitoring Quality of Experience or other indicators of quality of service delivering media data to user equipment in a telecommunications network. The method comprises determining a first value of the metric, determining a second value of the metric after a defined period of time, adjusting the value of said defined period of time, wherein the second determined value of the metric is used in determination of magnitude and direction of the adjustment and recording the determined values of the metric.
