The present disclosure provides coating compositions and cured products formed from the coating compositions. The cured products can be formed at high cure speeds from the coating compositions and feature low Young's modulus, high tear strength, and/or high tensile toughness. The cured products can be used as primary coatings for optical fibers. The primary coatings provide good microbending performance and are resistant to defect formation during fiber coating processing and handling operations. The coating compositions include an oligomer, an alkoxylated monofunctional acrylate monomer, and preferably, an N-vinyl amide compound.

Fiber coating compositions with high cure speed

The present description provides reduced-diameter multimode optical fibers. The optical fibers include a reduced-diameter glass fiber and/or reduced-thickness coatings. The overall diameter of the optical fibers is less than 210 &#x3bc;m and examples with diameters less than 160 &#x3bc;m are presented. Puncture resistant secondary coatings enable thinning of the secondary coating without compromising protection of the glass fiber. The optical fibers are suitable for data center applications and features high modal bandwidth, low attenuation, low microbending sensitivity, and puncture resistance in a compact form factor.

Puncture-resistant reduced-diameter multimode optical fiber

A method for making oligomers is described. The method includes reacting a polyol with a precursor having mixed functionality. The precursor includes a curable functional group and an isocyanate group capable of reacting with an alcohol group of the polyol. The precursor reacts with the alcohol group of the polyol to form a urethane linkage and to add a covalently bonded curable functional group to the polyol. The oligomers can be included in coating compositions for optical fiber and lead to coatings having improved tear strength.

Synthesis of oligomer for optical fiber coating

A coating composition that exhibits high cure speed is described. The coating composition includes one or more monomers, one or more oligomers, and a photoinitiator. The coating composition further includes a photo sensitizer that acts in cooperation with a photoinitiator to increase cure speed.

Fiber coating with fast cure speed

An optical communication cable and related systems and methods are provided. The cable includes an adhesion control material between a reinforcement sheet and a cable jacket. The adhesion control material includes a carrier fluid and a particulate material dispersed in the carrier fluid. The method includes extruding a polymer material over the wrapped sheet of reinforcement material to form a cable jacket, and the adhesion control material is located between an outer surface of the wrapped reinforcement sheet and an inner surface of the cable jacket.

A flame retardant optical fiber is provided. The flame retardant optical fiber includes a glass core, a cladding surrounding the glass core and a primary coating adhered to the cladding. The flame retardant optical fiber also includes a secondary coating surrounding the primary coating, wherein the secondary coating is formed from a coating composition that is substantially free of an oligomeric component and that comprises a flame retardant composition including a flame retardant material.

Flame-retardant optical fiber coating

Embodiments of an optical fiber ribbon cable are provided. The optical fiber ribbon cable includes a cable jacket having an interior surface defining a central bore, at least one buffer tube located in the central bore of the cable jacket, and at least one optical fiber ribbon disposed within the at least one buffer tube. The at least one optical fiber ribbon includes a plurality of optical fibers, a polymer matrix surrounding the plurality of optical fibers, and a low-smoke, flame retardant (LSFR) coating surrounding the polymer matrix. The LSFR coating includes from 25 to 65% by weight of an inorganic, halogen-free flame retardant filler dispersed in a curable acrylate medium. Further, the inorganic, halogen-free flame retardant filler includes particles having, on average, a maximum outer dimension of 5 microns.

Low smoke fire-resistant optical ribbon

An optical cable is provided. The optical cable includes a tubular, elongate body having an inner surface defining a cavity extending between first and second ends of the elongate body and an optical transmission element located with the cavity. The optical cable includes a coupling or bonding structure non-permanently and non-rigidly joining the outer surface of the optical transmission element to the elongate body at a plurality of periodic contact zones such that relative movement between the optical transmission element and the elongate body is resisted.

Fiber coatings with low Young's modulus and high tear strength are realized with coating compositions that include an oligomeric material formed from an isocyanate, a hydroxy acrylate compound and a polyol. The oligomeric material includes a polyether urethane acrylate and a di-adduct compound, where the di-adduct compound is present in an amount of at least 2.35 wt %. The reaction mixture used to form the oligomeric material may include a molar ratio of isocyanate:hydroxy acrylate:polyol of n:m:p, where n may be greater than 3.0, m may be between n&#x2212;1 and 2n&#x2212;4, and p may be 2. Young's modulus and tear strength of coatings made from the compositions increase with increasing n. Coatings formed from the present oligomers feature high tear strength for a given Young's modulus.

The present invention provides a method of making a methylene malonate monomer that includes the steps of reacting a malonic acid ester with a source of formaldehyde optionally in the presence of an acidic or basic catalyst and optionally in the presence of an acidic or non-acidic solvent to form reaction complex. The reaction is optionally performed in the presence of or contacted with an energy transfer means such as a heat transfer agent, a heat transfer surface, a source of radiation or a laser such that reaction complex is substantially vaporized to produce a vapor phase comprising methylene malonate monomer which may be isolated. The present invention further provides methylene malonate monomers prepared by the method of the invention, as well as compositions and products formed from the methylene malonate monomers, including monomer-based products (e.g., inks, adhesives, coatings, sealants or reactive molding) and polymer-based products (e.g., fibers, films, sheets, medical polymers, composite polymers and surfactants).

Synthesis of methylene malonates using rapid recovery in the presence of a heat transfer agent

The present invention provides improved methods for the chemical synthesis of methylene malonates using the Knovenagel synthesis reaction. The method of the invention provides for improved methylene malonates by significantly reducing or eliminating the formation of alternative and/or deleterious side products, significantly reducing or eliminating unwanted consumption of methylene malonates, and significantly reducing or eliminating the degradation of methylene malonates. These advantages result in methylene malonates, which upon recovery, are of higher quality, greater purity, improved yield and possess overall improved performance characteristics (e.g., improved cure speed, retention of cure speed, improved shelf-life and/or stability).
