A display device includes a display module for providing first image light. The display device also includes a first optical element for receiving and transmitting the first image light from the display module. The display module includes a region from which the first image light is provided in directions other than a direction perpendicular to the first optical element. The display device further includes a second optical element so that the second optical element receives the first image light transmitted through the first optical element and sends the received first image light back toward the first optical element as second image light. The first optical element receives the second image light from the second optical element and sends the second image light back toward the second optical element, and the second optical element receives and transmits the second image light from the first optical element.

High efficiency optical assembly with folded optical path

A display system includes a source of unpolarized image light, and a stack of polarization-selective optical elements operable to switchably convert the unpolarized image light into two orthogonally polarized light beams, each of which being switchable in at least one beam characteristic. An output polarizer selects one of the two orthogonally polarized light beams for providing to a user. A depolarizer may be disposed between an electronic display emitting polarized light and the stack. The depolarizer may be in the form of an LC bilayer with randomized in-plane optic axis.

An optical assembly includes a Fresnel lens and a diffractive optical element. The Fresnel lens includes a high-refractive-index material having a refractive index greater than 1.9. The diffractive optical element is optically coupled with the Fresnel lens to compensate for chromatic aberration caused by the Fresnel lens. A method for imaging light with the optical assembly is also disclosed.

A volumetric display may include a two-dimensional display; a varifocal optical system configured to receive image light from the two-dimensional display and focus the image light; and at least one processor configured to: control the two-dimensional display to cause a plurality of sub-frames associated with an image frame to be displayed by the display, wherein each sub-frame of the plurality of sub-frames includes a corresponding portion of image data associated with the image frame; and control the varifocal optical system to a corresponding focal state for each respective sub-frame.

A polarization modulator includes a first liquid crystal cell and a second liquid crystal cell. The first liquid crystal cell has a first type of liquid crystals configured to rotate an optical axis of light parallel to a first plane of the first liquid crystal cell. The second liquid crystal cell is configured to receive the light from the first liquid crystal cell. The second liquid crystal cell has a second type of liquid crystals configured to rotate the optical axis of the light perpendicular to a second plane of the second liquid crystal cell.

A display device includes an image source, a holographic relay, and a holographic image combiner in an off-axis configuration. The holographic relay may include a pair of freeform holographic reflectors relaying light of the image source to an intermediate image plane. The holographic image combiner receives and redirects the relayed light from the holographic relay, forming an image in angular domain at an eyebox of the display device, the image in angular domain corresponding to the image in linear domain generated by the image source.

An optical assembly for a digital projector includes a lens and a field bias optical element. The lens is disposed to receive display light generated by a display and to direct the display light along an optical path. The lens is configured to provide a first field-of-view. The field bias optical element is disposed between the lens and an aperture stop of the optical assembly. The field bias optical element is configured to bias the display light in at least one direction to provide a second field-of-view that is greater than the first field-of-view.

The diffractive optical element is positioned to receive and redirect the first light and receive and redirect the second light. The first plurality of optical elements are configured to compensate for astigmatism in a first axis and include a property associated with Zernike polynomial Z. The astigmatism compensation optical assembly also includes a second astigmatism compensation optical module including a second plurality of optical elements including PBP lenses, PBP gratings, PSH lenses, PSH gratings, metamaterials, or combinations thereof. The second plurality of optical elements are configured to compensate for astigmatism in a second axis and include a property associated with Zernike polynomial Z. Each of the first and the second astigmatism compensation module is configurable between a plurality of optical powers to provide a plurality of cylindrical and axial correction values.

Varifocal optical assembly providing astigmatism compensation

A method includes providing frames of video data for being displayed by a head mounted display (HMD). Pixel data is encoded in a pixel of at least some of the video data frames, the encoded pixel data defining a focal state of an optics block of the HMD for displaying the respective frame of the video data to a user. The predetermined focal state is determined from a plurality of available focal states of the optics block, each focal state corresponding to a different focal plane of a virtual image generated based on the video data. The pixel used for encoding may be disposed outside a region of the frame that is displayable by the HMD.
