A lens assembly for a head mounted device may be configured to in-couple light from an eyebox region using a number of waveguide systems coupled to a number of image sensors, for example, for one or both lens assemblies in the head mounted device. The waveguide systems may be positioned in the lens assembly. The waveguide systems may be configured to in-couple light from various portions of the eyebox region. The waveguide systems may be configured to couple the light from a center region of the lens assembly to a number of peripheral regions of the lens assembly. The image sensors may be optically coupled to the waveguide systems and may be configured to receive portions of the light from the waveguide systems.

Multi-directional waveguide eye tracking system

A switchable grating may be used to redirect illuminating light for illuminating a user's eye in an eye tracking system, to facilitate the determination of eye position and/or orientation. The eye tracking system may be used in a near-eye display. An eye tracking camera obtains an eye image, and a controller performs an initial determination of the eye position. The controller may switch the switchable grating to direct the illuminating light beam onto the eye, for a better position and/or eye orientation determination.

An apparatus, system, and method for a hologram recording system include a recording medium, a light source, and optical elements. The recording medium is configured to record a hologram. At least one light source is configured to provide a writing beam. The optical elements are positioned in a light path of the writing beam and are configured to condition the writing beam to record the hologram at least partially in the volume. The optical elements may include at least one toric optical element and a mirror. The toric optical element may be configured to subtract a quadratic phase from a wavefront of the writing beam, and the mirror may be configured to subtract a linear phase from the wavefront of the writing beam.

A method for making an optical grating having a non-uniform refractive index profile along a direction substantially perpendicular to a plane defined by the optical grating includes placing a layer of photopolymerization material having a first surface and a second surface that is opposite to the first surface between a first material transfer layer and a second material transfer layer so that the first surface of the layer of photopolymerization material is in contact with the first material transfer layer and the second surface of the layer of photopolymerization material is in contact with the second material transfer layer to allow material transfer between the layer of photopolymerization material and the first and second material transfer layers by diffusion.

An apparatus, system, and method for a waveguide system may be used to support eye tracking in a head mounted display (HMD). The waveguide system may be positioned in a user's field of view and within a lens assembly of the HMD to capture light that is reflected from an eye. The waveguide system may include a waveguide, a first diffraction grating, and a second diffraction grating. The first diffraction grating may be configured to in-couple light of a first wavelength into the waveguide, and the second diffraction grating may be configured to in-couple light of a second wavelength. The first and second diffraction gratings operate together to detect light reflections from an eyebox region.

Wavelength multiplexed waveguide system for eye tracking

According to examples, a display system may include a wearable eyewear arrangement that may include a lens assembly having a projector to propagate display light associated with an image. The lens assembly may also include a waveguide configuration for propagating the display light to an eyebox. The waveguide configuration may include a volume Bragg grating (VBG) component for propagating the display light from a projector to an eyebox. The VBG component may include at least one tilt adjusted grating facilitated by adjustment in an original grating vector (k) direction of a grating by a pre-determined value. The tilt adjusted grating may facilitate to mitigate a rainbow effect observable in a gazing direction of the eyebox. The rainbow effect may be mitigated by modification of a rainbow ghost path away from the gazing direction without affecting propagation of the image pertaining to the display light.

According to examples, a system for detection, analysis and correction of disparities in display systems utilizing one or more disparity sensing port is described. The system may include a processor and a memory storing instructions. In addition, the system may include a first lens including a first waveguide for displaying a first image and a second lens including a second waveguide for displaying a second image. Furthermore, the system may include a first projector associated with the first lens to propagate first display light associated with the first image, a second projector associated with the second lens to propagate second display light associated with the second image and a disparity sensing port to receive the first display light and the second display light to determine a disparity associated with the first image and the second image.

A waveguide display system include a waveguide, an input coupler configured to couple display light into the waveguide, a first pupil expander, and a second pupil expander. The first pupil expander is configured to deflect, at a first plurality of locations along a first direction, the display light towards the second pupil expander. The second pupil expander is configured to deflect, at a second plurality of locations along a second direction different from the first direction, the display light from the first pupil expander towards an eyebox of the waveguide display system. At least one of the input coupler, the first pupil expander, or the second pupil expander includes transflective mirrors that are tilted within the waveguide such that the transflective mirrors are inconspicuous when viewed from an oblique angle.

An apparatus, system, and method for a waveguide system may be used to support eye tracking in a head mounted display (HMD). The waveguide system may be positioned in a user's field of view and within a lens assembly of the HMD to capture light that is reflected from an eye. The waveguide system may have a number of multi-directional gratings configured to direct light to an out-coupling grating. The multi-directional gratings include first and second in-coupling diffraction gratings disposed in a waveguide. The first and second in-coupling diffraction gratings are oriented to direct incident light in multiple directions within the waveguide towards the out-coupling diffraction grating.

A waveguide display includes a waveguide transparent to visible light, a first volume Bragg grating (VBG) on the waveguide and characterized by a first refractive index modulation, and a second reflection VBG on the waveguide and including a plurality of regions characterized by different respective refractive index modulations. The first reflection VBG is configured to diffract display light in a first wavelength range and a first field of view (FOV) range such that the display light in the first wavelength range and the first FOV range propagates in the waveguide through total internal reflection to the plurality of regions of the second reflection VBG. The plurality of regions of the second reflection VBG are configured to diffract the display light in different respective wavelength ranges within the first wavelength range and the first FOV range.

Spatially multiplexed volume Bragg gratings with varied refractive index modulations for waveguide display

A display system includes a wearable eyewear arrangement with a projector for propagating display light associated with an image and a waveguide for propagating the display light to an eye box. The waveguide includes volume Bragg gratings (VBGs), which may be in groups of three or more gratings with same horizontal period allowing each color to be coupled out from the waveguide by the same type of grating, thus, at the same angle, reducing or eliminating image blurriness and ghost images while allowing a smaller size waveguide. A 100% reflective mirror or mirror array is used for broad spectrum reflection into the waveguide for light input. Selection of two or more wavelengths for each color at the projector provides spectral response matching to the waveguide allowing wider field of view (FOV) coverage for the entire wavelength spectrum.
