A multi-section optical modulator and related method are disclosed wherein two waveguide arms traverse a plurality of successive modulating sections. A differential drive signal is applied separately to each waveguide arm of each modulating sections in synchronism with the transmission of light along the waveguide arms, effecting a dual differential driving of each section. By suitably selecting the number of modulating sections and the section length, a high modulation bandwidth and a high modulation efficiency may be achieved simultaneously for a given peak-to-peak voltage swing of the drive signal.

Optical waveguide modulator

A low loss high extinction ratio on-chip polarizer is disclosed. The polarizer includes an input waveguide taper having an outer waveguiding region that widens in the direction of light propagation along at least a portion of the taper length, and a core waveguiding region that narrows in the direction of light propagation along at least a portion of the taper length, so as to selectively squeeze out light of undesired modes into the outer regions while preserving light of a desired mode in the waveguide core. An output filter section is provided to prevent light from reentering the output waveguide after being squeezed out. An integrated light absorber/deflector may be coupled to the outer waveguiding regions.

Integrated on-chip polarizer

A transmitter comprising a plurality of modulator and multiplexer (Mod-MUX) units, each Mod-MUX unit operating at an optical wavelength different from the other Mod-MUX units. The transmitter can additional include in each Mod-MUX unit two optical taps and three photodetectors that are configured to allow the respective Mod-MUX unit to be tuned to achieve thermal stabilization and achieve effective modulation and WDM operation across a range of temperatures. The Mod-MUX transmitter avoids the use of a frequency comb. The Mod-MUX transmitter avoids cross-modulation between different modulators for different laser signals.

Operation and stabilization of mod-mux WDM transmitters based on silicon microrings

A multi-section optical modulator and related method are disclosed wherein two waveguide arms traverse a plurality of successive modulating sections. A compact, low-loss and wavelength insensitive Y-junction for submicron silicon waveguides. The design was performed using FDTD and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The device was fabricated in a 248 nm CMOS line. Measured average insertion loss is 0.28&#xb1;0.02 dB across an 8-inch wafer. The device footprint is less than 1.2 &#x3bc;m&#xd7;2 &#x3bc;m, orders of magnitude smaller than MMI and directional couplers.

Compact and low loss Y-junction for submicron silicon waveguide

When routing light on photonic integrated circuit (PIC) chips optical back-reflection and scattering can be highly detrimental to the desired application. Unused ports of optical devices, such as MMI, DC, Y-junction, PD, etc. are a cause for back-reflection and scattering, whereby the scattered light could get picked up by adjacent components, e.g. photodetectors. Management of stray light on the PIC is needed to prevent the undesired coupling between various components and to reduce noise. A dump taper may be used to guide and scatter stray light away from sensitive components or fully absorb the light while maintaining very low reflection from the taper. A doped dump taper may be used to passively absorb light reaching the unused port, thereby eliminating unwanted reflection and scattering. Alternatively, an undoped taper may be used to scatter light away from sensitive components while maintaining very low back-reflection.

Dump terminator

The back reflection in photodiodes is caused by an abrupt index contrast between the input waveguide and the composite waveguide/light absorbing material. In order to improve the back reflection, it is proposed to introduce an angle between the waveguide and the leading edge of the light absorbing material. The angle will result in gradually changing the effective index between the index of the waveguide and the index of the composite section, and consequently lower the amount of light reflecting back.

Reducing back reflection in a photodiode

A novel phase shifter design for carrier depletion based silicon modulators, based on an experimentally validated model, is described. It is believed that the heretofore neglected effect of incomplete ionization will have a significant impact on ultra-responsive phase shifters. A low V&#x3c0;L product of 0.3 V&#xb7;cm associated with a low propagation loss of 20 dB/cm is expected to be observed. The phase shifter is based on overlapping implantation steps, where the doses and energies are carefully chosen to utilize counter-doping to produce an S-shaped junction. This junction has a particularly attractive V&#x3c0;L figure of merit, while simultaneously achieving attractively low capacitance and optical loss. This improvement will enable significantly smaller Mach-Zehnder modulators to be constructed that nonetheless would have low drive voltages, with substantial decreases in insertion loss. The described fabrication process is of minimal complexity; in particular, no high-resolution lithographic step is required.

Ultra-responsive phase shifters for depletion mode silicon modulators

An optical circuit capable of operating as a 90&#xb0; optical hybrid includes a phase-symmetric optical splitter and a 90&#xb0; optical splitter, and two 2&#xd7;2 optical couplers as optical combiners. The input ports of the optical combiners and the output ports of the optical splitters face a common area therebetween, with the optical splitters interposed between optical combiners as viewed along the circumference of the common area. The output ports of each optical splitter is connected to closest input ports of the optical combiners with optical waveguides of a same length. The length of the waveguides may be minimized when the optical couplers and the optical splitters are disposed in a cross-like configuration.

Optical hybrid

Described are various embodiments of a dual optical modulator, system and method. In one embodiment, an optical modulator modulates an input optical signal having a designated optical frequency. The modulator comprises first and second tunable modulators operable around the optical frequency and operatively disposed between a bus waveguide path and an opposed waveguide path. The modulator further comprises a relative optical phase-shifter optically coupled between the tunable modulators so to impart a relative optical phase shift between the bus waveguide path and the opposed waveguide path. The tunable modulators are respectively driveable to modulate a respective resonance thereof in complimentary directions relative to the optical frequency and thereby resonantly redirect a selectable portion of the input optical signal along the opposed waveguide path such that the relative optical phase shift is imparted thereto for output. Embodiments of an optical modulation method and an IQ modulator are also described.

Optical dual resonator modulation system and method, and optical dual resonator modulator therefor

In conventional hybrid lasers large back refection may lead to a degradation of relative intensity noise (RIN), linewidth broadening, mode hopping, etc. To solve the aforementioned problem a hybrid laser includes a mode converter for converting a higher-back-reflection mode of the light to a mode providing less back reflection to the gain chip. The mode converter may comprise a polarization rotator, a waveguide converter, or high-order mode converter. A routing waveguide may be provided including a phase shifter, e.g. a doped waveguide, for adjusting a cavity length of the laser cavity.

Reducing back reflection in hybrid lasers

An integrated polarization splitter and rotator (PSR) employs the TE0 and TE1 modes of propagating light, rather than the TE0 and TM0 modes used in conventional prior art PSR. The integrated PSR exhibits appreciably flatter wavelength response because it does not require a directional coupler to de-multiplex incoming polarizations. The PSR allows tuning of the TM0 loss to reduce polarization dependent loss (PDL). This integrated polarization splitter and rotator is applicable to all integrated platforms including Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) and III-V semiconductor compound systems. The PSR may be very compact (12&#xd7;2 &#x3bc;m), and provides low loss (&#x3c;0.3 dB across the C-band) and ultra-broadband operation. The PSR also affords better control of polarization dependent losses.

Integrated polarization splitter and rotator including a PDL tuning region

Practical silicon-based light sources are still missing, despite the progress in germanium lasers, because both silicon and germanium are indirect-band semiconductors and inefficient at light generation. A tunable and single mode external cavity laser comprising: a gain medium for generating light between a reflective surface at one end of the gain medium; and a wavelength selective reflector at the other end of a laser cavity. A splitter disposed in the laser cavity includes an input port optically coupled to the gain medium, an input/output port optically coupled to the wavelength selective reflector, and an output port for outputting laser light at selected wavelengths. The wavelength selective reflector reflects light of one or more selected periodic wavelengths back to the gain medium via the input/output port, and passes light of non-selected wavelengths out of the laser cavity.

External cavity laser

Conventionally, wavelength locking and monitoring has been achieved used various components, including calibrated etalon filters, gratings, and arrays of color filters, which offer fairly bulky solutions that require complicated controls. An improved on-chip wavelength monitor comprises: a combination comb filter comprising a plurality of comb filters, each for receiving a test beams, and each comb filter including a substantially different FSR, e.g. 10&#xd7; to 20&#xd7; the next closest FSR. A controller dithers a phase tuning section of each comb filter to generate a maximum or minimum output in a corresponding photodetector indicative of the wavelength of the test signal.

Wavelength locker

A MOSCAP phase adjuster includes two conductive regions with a thin insulating region therebetween, where charge is accumulated or depleted. In conventional MOSCAP modulators, the conductive and insulating regions are superposed layers, extending horizontally parallel to the substrate, which limits waveguide design and mode confinement, resulting in reduced phase shift performance. An improved MOSCAP phase adjuster and method of fabricating a MOSCAP phase adjuster includes depositing the material for the second conductive region beside and over top of the first conductive region after oxidation, and selectively etching the material to form the second conductive region.
