A method for treating chemo therapy or radiation therapy side effects in a mammal undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy, the method comprising a step of administering to the mammal a therapeutically effective amount of a RAR antagonist or RAR inverse agonist which binds to receptors of the RAR&#x3b1;, RAR&#x3b2; and RAR&#x3b3; subtypes is disclosed. Such side effects include chemoradiotherapy-induced alopecia, chemoradiotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia, chemoradiotherapy-induced leucopenia and chemoradiotherapy-induced neutropenia.

Use of a RAR antagonist or inverse agonist for the treatment of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy side effects

Compounds of the formula where the variables are defined in the specification have cytochrome P450RAI-1 and P450RAI-2 inhibitory activity, and are suitable for treatment of mammals with conditions which are treatable with retinoids, or which are controlled by or responsive to the organism's native retinoic acid. Formulations containing the compounds of the invention can also be co-administered with retinoids and/or Vitamin A to enhance or prolong the effects of medications containing retinoids, Vitamin A, or of the organism's native retinoic acid.

The invention provides in one embodiment a method for treating vascular trauma.
