Operation data from one or more vehicle subsystems are input to a vehicle dynamics model. Predicted operation data of the one or more vehicle subsystems are output from the vehicle dynamics model. The operation data and the predicted operation data are input to an optimization program that is programmed to output control directives for the one or more vehicle subsystems. One or more vehicle subsystems are operated according to the output control directives.

Methods and systems are provided for controlling vehicle torque output during cruise control. In one example, a method may include determining future vehicle torque output by minimizing an objective function based on an instantaneous vehicle speed, an average vehicle speed, and a present vehicle torque output. The weights of the objective function may be updated based on the past and the present vehicle operating parameters.

Methods and systems for cruise control

A system, comprising a first computer that includes a processor and a memory. The memory stores instructions executable by the processor to input an expected control input to a second computer, and then, to determine a response resulting from the expected control input. Methods and systems are provided for diagnosing a cylinder valve deactivation mechanism in an engine system having cam-actuated valves. Movement of a latch pin of the deactivation mechanism is inferred from an induction current generated by a solenoid coupled to the latch pin, and the inferred movement is used to diagnose operation of cylinder valve deactivation mechanism. The inferred movement and a profile of the induction current is also used to estimate camshaft and crankshaft timing for improved cylinder fuel delivery in the absence of a camshaft sensor.

Method and system for variable displacement engine diagnostics

Methods and systems are provided for estimating engine oil temperature during conditions when sensors used for engine oil temperature measurement are not functional or not reliable. A null duty cycle of a solenoid spool valve of a variable cam timing mechanism is estimated. Then, a calibrated relationship between the duty cycle, an angular velocity of the associated cam, and the engine oil temperature is used to estimate an engine oil temperature when existing sensors used in the calculation of engine oil temperature calculation become unreliable.

Method and apparatus are disclosed for a speed controller for a vehicle. An example disclosed vehicle includes a power train control unit and an autonomy unit. The example power train control unit controls a speed of the vehicle based on a control signal. The example autonomy unit (a) receives a speed profile based on a preview of traffic information from an profile generator on an external network, and (b) based on vehicle dynamic data and the speed profile, generate the control signal to control the speed of the vehicle according to the speed profile.

Methods and systems are provided for determining changes in a flow area of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve for EGR flow estimates due to a change in temperature difference between a stem and body of the EGR valve. In one example, a method includes adjusting an EGR valve based on an estimate of EGR flow, the EGR flow estimated based on a pressure difference across the EGR valve and an adjusted valve flow area. The adjusted valve flow area may be based on the temperature difference between the stem and body of the EGR valve.

System and methods for operating an exhaust gas recirculation valve based on a temperature difference of the valve

A controller includes a processor programmed to determine, for a vehicle, a first control input based on input data and first reference parameters. The processor is further programmed to operate the vehicle according to the first control input. Based on operating data of the vehicle for an operating condition, the processor determines a second control input for the vehicle. Operating the vehicle according to the second control input reduces a cost of operating the vehicle relative to operating the vehicle according to the first control input. The processor is further programmed to determine, based on the second control input, second reference parameters. The controller generates a third control input based on the second reference parameters and the input data. A cost of operating the vehicle according to the third control input is reduced relative to the cost of operating the vehicle based on the first control input.

A method for operating an actuator is disclosed. The actuator may be a linear or non-linear actuator. In one example, a pseudo-inverse piecewise bilinear model is adapted in response to output of a feedback controller to improve feed forward control.

Wastegate control

Methods and systems are provided for adjusting an engine sound audible to the operator in a vehicle cabin during an engine idle-stop. In one example, responsive to an engine idle-stop, modified versions of a generated engine sound may be played via a dashboard speaker during each of the engine spin-down, engine rest, and engine spin-up. The modified versions of a generated engine sound may at least partially cancel inherent engine spin-up and engine spin-down sounds while maintaining an engine idling sound.

Methods and systems for engine sound during idle-stop

Systems and methods are described for powertrain controls optimization. One method comprises adaptively learning engine settings for a sparse sample of a speed-load map, which includes engine operation at boundary conditions of a speed-load map, and generating a dynamic node look-up table based on the learned engine settings for the sparse sample. The dynamic node look-up table may provide engine settings for engine operation at speed-load points not explicitly learned during the adaptive learning.

Various methods for compensating variation in the geometry and position of linkages and valve seats in wastegate assemblies are provided. In one example, a method of operating a wastegate in an internal combustion engine comprises, at engine startup, placing a wastegate valve at a seat, recording a position of the seat and associating the seat position with one or more operating parameters, and modifying a position of a wastegate actuator based on the seat position throughout engine operation.
