An ion exchange polymer is provided. The ion exchange polymer is a reaction product of a reaction between a crosslinker monomer and a cationic monomer. The crosslinker monomer is a reaction product of a reaction between a first crosslinking monomer and a second crosslinking monomer. Further, the cationic monomer comprises a quaternary ammonium group. A method for making an ion exchange polymer is also provided. The method comprises a step of preparing a curable solution and a step of curing the curable solution. The step of preparing the curable solution comprises mixing a pair of crosslinking monomers, a cationic monomer that comprises a quaternary ammonium group and an acid. A membrane is also provided. The membrane comprises the ion exchange polymer made by the method provided.

Ion exchange polymers and a method for making ion exchange polymers

A self-supported ion exchange membrane including a polymerized and crosslinked monomer, where the monomer includes: a least one ionic group, a polymerized group, and a silicate group; and a polymer chemically bonded to crosslinked monomer through the silicate group.

Ion exchange membranes prepared from crosslinked ion exchange polymer compositions

This specification describes an ion exchange membrane and a method of making it. The membrane may be used, for example, in an electrodialysis module or electrochemical cell. The membrane comprises an ion exchange polymer and inorganic particles preferably linked to the ion exchange polymer. To make a membrane, inorganic particles are mixed into an ion exchange membrane pre-cursor. A polymerization initiator or catalyst is then added and the resulting mixture is placed in a form and cured. The inorganic particles may comprise, for example, an oxidized form of graphite such as graphite oxide. The ion exchange polymer may comprise an ionic monomer, containing a quaternary ammonium group for anion exchange or a sulfonate group for cation exchange, along with a crosslinking co-monomer containing polymerizable diacrylic functionalities. Methods for separating carbon dioxide from a fluid stream at a temperature higher than about 200&#xb0; C. with selectivity higher than Knudsen diffusion selectivity include contacting a porous membrane with the fluid stream to preferentially transport carbon dioxide. The porous membrane includes a porous support and a continuous porous separation layer disposed on a surface of the porous support and extending between the fluid stream and the porous support layer. The porous support comprises alumina, silica, zirconia, stabilized zirconia, stainless steel, titanium, nickel-based alloys, aluminum-based alloys, zirconium-based alloys or a combination thereof. Median pore size of the porous separation layer is less than about 10 nm, and the porous separation layer comprises titania, MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO, LaO, CeO, HfO, YO, VO, NbO, TaO, ATiO, AZrO, AAlO, AFeO, AMnO, ACoO, ANiO, AHfO, ACeO, LiZrO, LiSiO, LiTiO, LiHfO, ANO, YNO, LaNO, HfNO, or a combination thereof;

Membranes for separation of carbon dioxide

A novel class of proton exchange membrane materials, sulfonated poly(phthalazinones), were prepared by modification of poly(phthalazinone). Sulfonation reactions were conducted at room temperature using mixtures of 95-98% concentrated sulfuric acid and 27-33% fuming sulfuric acid with different acid ratios in order to get SPPEK with degree of sulfonation (DS) in the range of 0.6 to 1.0. The presence of sulfonic acid groups was confirmed by FT-IR analysis, and the DS and structures were characterized by NMR. The introduction of sulfonic groups into the polymer chains led to an increase in the glass transition temperature and a decrease in the decomposition temperature. Membrane films were cast from solution in N,N-dimethylformamide or N,N-dimethylacetamide. Water uptakes and swelling ratios of the membrane films increased with DS and sulfonated polymers with DS&#x3e;1.2 were water soluble at 80&#xb0; C. Proton conductivity increased with DS and temperature up to 95&#xb0; C., reaching 10S/Cm.

Proton exchange membrane materials based on sulfonated poly (phthalazinones)

Ether nitrile co-polymers containing sulfonic acid groups, including wholly aromatic poly(aryl ether ether nitrile)s containing sulfonic acid groups (SPAEEN)s, and poly(phthalazinone ether ketone nitrile) co-polymers containing sulfonic acid groups (SPPEKN)s, intended for fuel cells applications as proton conducting membrane materials, were prepared.

Ether nitrile co-polymers containing sulfonic acid groups for PEM application

A new series of wholly aromatic poly(arylene ether ether ketone ketone)s containing pendant sulfonic acid groups (SPAEEKK) were conveniently prepared by potassium carbonate mediated nucleophilic polycondensation reactions of inexpensive commercially available monomers: 1,3-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene (BFBB), sodium 6,7-dihydroxy-2-naphthalenesulfonate (DHNS), and 4,4'-biphenol or hydroquinone in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) at 170&#xb0; C. FT-IR and NMR were used to characterize the structures and the sulfonate or sulfonic acid contents (SC) of the polymers. Flexible membrane films were obtained by casting N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) solutions of copolymers. Membrane films in acid form were then obtained by treating the sodium form membrane films in 2 N sulfuric acid at room temperature. Glass transition temperatures (Ts) and decomposition temperatures (Ts) of SPAEEKKs in both sodium and acid forms were determined. Water uptake and swelling ratio values increased with SCs and temperatures. The proton conductivities of acid form membrane films increased with SC value and temperature and reached 5.6&#xd7;10S/cm at 100&#xb0; C. for SPAEEKK-100.
