A sterilization system includes a vial, a carrier of microorganisms disposed in the vial, and a fluid management system having an output connectable to the vial for delivering a liquid chemical sterilant and a neutralizer thereto. Additionally, a growth medium may be delivered to the vial such that the vial and growth medium may assessed for a change to a visual characteristic indicative of sterilization inefficacy.

Liquid-chemical sterilization system with biological indicator

A tubing junction assembly may include a body, and a collar coupled to the body. The body may include a head portion, a base portion, and an intermediate portion. At least a portion of an outer surface of the body at the intermediate portion may define a cross-sectional width that tapers from the head portion to the base portion. The collar may have an inner surface defining a passage. A tubing may be stretched over the outer surface of the body with a proximal end portion of the tubing stretched over at least a portion of the outer surface of the body at the intermediate portion. The inner surface of the collar may be sleeved over a portion of the outer surface of the tubing and coupled to the collar such that the proximal end portion of the tubing is sandwiched and compressed between the body and the collar.

A biological indicator with variable resistance may be controlled by moving a cap or housing of the biological indicator to cause the size of vents that allow flow of sterilant through the housing to decrease or increase in effective size. An indicator window may show a user the current resistance of the biological indicator, and may also show a readable indicator that may be captured by a scanner to allow a sterilizing cabinet to identify the current resistance. When the level of resistance shown by the readable indicator is not compatible with a sterilization cycle selected by a user, the procedure may be delayed and a notification provided to the user that a problem exists. The readable indicator may be a passive tag with a memory that allows information to be read and written, so that the biological indicator may carry data from one device to another.

Biological indicator with variable resistance

A medical instrument processor includes an enclosure, a liquid distribution system, and a disinfectant concentration measuring subsystem. The enclosure is configured to hold a medical instrument. The liquid distribution system is configured to deliver a disinfection solution to a medical instrument within the enclosure. The liquid distribution system has a liquid outlet. The disinfectant concentration measuring subsystem includes a first mixing chamber in fluid communication with the liquid outlet, a pump that is configured to simultaneously pump the disinfection solution and the reagent solution into the first mixing chamber, and a concentration analysis assembly that is operable to determine a concentration of disinfectant in a sample solution that is output from the first mixing chamber. The reservoir is in fluid communication with the first mixing chamber.

Apparatus and method to measure concentration of disinfectant in medical device reprocessing system

A self-contained biological indicator ('SCBI') is disclosed. The SCBI may include a first ampule and a second ampule. The first ampule may contain a first volume of a first growth medium, and the second ampule may contain a second volume of a second growth medium. The SCBI is configured such that the first ampule may be broken before the second ampule. The SCBI may be analyzed for changes in fluorescence of the first growth medium. Then, the SCBI may be analyzed for changes in a color of the second growth medium.

Self-contained biological indicator

Biological indicators may be improperly activated. The disclosed subject matter is directed to methods of confirming that a biological indicator having an ampule containing a growth medium has been properly activated such that it may be assayed. The methods may include the steps of measuring a first fluorescence intensity of the biological indicator, heating the biological indicator; quenching the fluorescence intensity of the biological indicator from the first fluorescence intensity to a second fluorescence intensity, measuring the second fluorescence intensity; comparing the second fluorescence intensity and first fluorescence intensity to obtain a comparison value; and determining that the comparison value corresponds to a quenching metric of the liquid growth medium.

Systems and methods for confirming activation of biological indicators

An apparatus and method are disclosed for identifying the position of an object that is, or will be, used in a sterilization process. The apparatus comprises at least two containers and each container has a cavity configured to receive the object. At least one visual indicator corresponds to each container. A programmable hardware device is configured to receive an identifier. Responsive to receipt of the identifier, the programmable hardware device is configured to indicate a position of at least one of the containers that corresponds to the identifier utilizing the visual indicator.

Storage apparatus and method for identifying a position of an object

A liquid distribution system is configured to deliver a disinfectant solution to a medical device within an enclosure. A disinfectant concentration measuring subsystem includes a mixing chamber, a reservoir, a reservoir cap, a pump, and a concentration analysis assembly. The first mixing chamber is in fluid communication with an outlet of the liquid distribution system. The reservoir is configured to contain a reagent solution and is in fluid communication with the mixing chamber. The reservoir cap includes a static member, which is configured to couple with a supply conduit and a return conduit; and a rotating member, which is configured to rotate relative to the static member to couple the reservoir cap with the reservoir. The pump is configured to simultaneously pump the disinfectant solution and the reagent solution into the mixing chamber. The concentration analysis assembly is operable to determine a concentration of disinfectant output from the mixing chamber.

A method for dynamic dosing of disinfectant solution in a medical device reprocessing system includes calculating a volume of an initial dose of concentrated disinfectant solution for dilution to make a first in-use disinfectant solution. The initial dose of concentrated disinfectant solution is diluted with diluting fluid to make the first in-use disinfectant solution comprising a target concentration of disinfectant agent. The first in-use disinfectant solution is applied to a medical device. A concentration of the disinfectant agent in the first in-use disinfectant solution is then calculated. The actual concentration of the disinfectant agent in the concentrated disinfectant solution is then calculated based upon the concentration of disinfectant agent in the first in-use disinfectant solution. It is then determined whether a volume of a second dose of concentrated disinfectant solution is increased or about the same as the volume of the initial dose to make a second in-use disinfectant solution.

A method measures a property of a germicidal solution in an endoscope processor spectroscopically by placing a quantity of the solution into a cuvette and passing a light therethrough. A reservoir receives a quantity of the solution and bubbles are filtered out via a cross-flow filter prior to putting a sample therefrom into the cuvette for measuring.

Automated endoscope reprocessor germicide concentration monitoring system and method

A method measures a property of a solution spectroscopically by placing a quantity of the solution into a cuvette and passing a light therethrough. A reservoir receives a quantity of the solution and bubbles are driven off prior to putting a sample therefrom into the cuvette for measuring.
