A system and apparatus for testing a micromachined optical device includes a computerized test station that generates signals to control the micromachined optical device as well as various test equipment and analyzes signals generated by the micromachined optical device and various test equipment. The computerized test station typically provides for both manual and automated testing of the micromachined optical device. In order to test the micromachined optical device, various optical measurement devices are typically mounted on a frame. The frame is configured so as to maintain proper alignment between the optical measurement devices and the micromachined device under test. The frame is mounted to or integral with a focusing device. The frame moves along with focusing movements of the focusing device in such a way that the optical measurement devices are properly aligned with the micromachined device under test when the focusing device is focused on the micromachined device under test.

System and apparatus for testing a micromachined optical device

A fiber-attached optical device with in-plane micromachined mirrors includes a cover having at least one reflector formed on one side and a substrate having a plurality of micromachined optical mirrors formed substantially on a single plane on a side facing toward the mirrored side of the cover. The micromachined optical mirrors are controllable to reflect optical signals between a plurality of optical fiber segments via the at least one reflector. The plurality of optical fiber segments can be attached to either the cover or the substrate so as to form an integrated package including the substrate, the cover, and the plurality of optical fiber segments. The mirrors can be controlled to variably attenuate the optical signals.

Fiber-attached optical devices with in-plane micromachined mirrors

A two input, two output optical switch includes two movable mirrors. Each movable mirror is used for two optical signal reflections, one from an input fiber collimator to the same or a different movable mirror via a fixed cover mirror, and one from the same or a different movable mirror via the fixed cover mirror to an output fiber collimator. A single electrode may be used to control the mirror positions.

An imaging system is disclosed including a first illumination source for producing a first illumination field, a modulation system for modulating the first illumination field, and an optical imaging system for directing the modulated illumination field to an imaging surface along a first optical path. In accordance with an embodiment, the imaging system includes a second illumination source for producing a second illumination field, a first sub-assembly, a second sub-assembly and a control assembly. The first sub-assembly is for directing the second illumination field toward the imaging surface along a second optical path that is different than and non-parallel with said first optical path. The first sub-assembly includes a beam splitter sub-assembly that includes a beam splitter and at least one lens. The second sub-assembly is for receiving a portion of the second illumination field from the imaging surface, and includes a lens and a sensor for producing a sensor output signal. The control assembly is for adjusting a focal point of the optical imaging system responsive to the sensor output signal.

In an imaging system and method are disclosed, including a first illumination source for producing a first illumination field, a modulation system for modulating the first illumination field, and an optical imaging system for directing the modulated illumination field to an imaging surface. The optical imaging system includes at least one optical lens for directing the modulated illumination field toward the imaging surface along the optical axis of said optical lens. The at least one optical lens includes a first surface facing the modulation system and a second surface facing the imaging surface. The optical imaging system also includes a second illumination source for producing a second illumination field. The second illumination field has a frequency that is different than the frequency of the first illumination field. The optical imaging system also includes an optical assembly for directing the second illumination field toward the imaging surface along an optical path that is different than the first optical path such that the second illumination field contacts the first surface of the at least one optical lens from a direction other than that which is normal to the first surface of the at least one optical lens. The optical imaging system also includes a sensor assembly for receiving the second illumination field after it is reflected off of a portion of the imaging surface, and for producing a sensor output signal. The optical imaging system also includes a control assembly for adjusting the position of the at least one optical lens responsive to the sensor output signal.

Focusing system and method for use in imaging systems

The invention provides an improved illumination system for use in imaging systems that may produce a non-overlapped near field image in the slow axis direction, and a far field image of the illumination source in the slow axis direction at a light modulator. In an embodiment, the illumination system produces an area of illumination for a light modulator along a slow axis direction and along a fast axis direction, and includes a plurality of laser diode emitters, a first array of first micro lenses, and a second array of second micro lenses. The plurality of laser diode emitters are arranged in an array, and each of the laser diode emitters produces illumination in a slow axis direction and in a fast axis direction. Each first micro lens in the first array corresponds to one of the laser diode emitters, and collimates illumination in the slow axis direction. Each of the second micro lenses of the second array corresponds to one of the first micro lenses. Each of the second micro lenses is arranged to receive illumination from one of the first micro lenses. The first micro lenses produce a non-overlapped near field image in the slow axis direction.

Illumination system for use in imaging systems

A scanning apparatus providing separate fixed object focal planes for transmissive and reflective original documents to be scanned, wherein a scan carriage containing illumination, sensor, and optical elements is moved together to scan an original document and to obtain a digitized representation thereof. The movable scan carriage has an illumination source disposed between the reflective and transmissive object focal planes, with the object focal plane to be used selected by changing the position of a single optical element within the scan carriage. The illumination source comprises a single lamp disposed for correct illumination of the selected object focal plane. Automatic resolution selection and focusing of the original image can occur using a converging device comprising a first and second focusing lens.

A method for transferring an image to a medium includes: generating a substantially uniform line of radiation; producing diffractive light from the uniform line of radiation; passing zero order diffractive light to the medium in a telecentric fashion while blocking non-zero order diffractive light; adjusting image magnification on the medium independent of image focus in response to the zero order diffractive light; and adjusting image focus on the medium independent of image magnification in response to the zero order magnification-adjusted diffractive light. An optical imaging head for transferring an image onto a medium via the above method includes: a line illumination module for generating a substantially uniform line of radiation; a grating light valve which receives the line of radiation and generates diffractive orders of modulated radiation; a first lens group for adjusting image magnification independent of image focus; a second lens group for passing radiation to the medium in a telecentric fashion, the second lens group adjusting image focus independent of image magnification; and a stop, placed between the first and second lens groups, having a single aperture for passing zero order radiation and blocking non-zero order radiation.
