An optical channel monitor is formed to include the capability to sense real-time changes in optical power across signal bands (optical power changes including, for example, a complete drop out of the signal band) and quickly measure the resulting spectrum, thus enabling the host to initiate advanced power balancing solutions that mitigate the extent of the power change until a permanent fix is provided. A set of signal band sensors is included with a conventional OCM, where each sensor includes a photodetector that is able to detect changes in operation along its associated incoming signal band. Control electronics are used to monitor the states of the photodetectors, with the ability to invoke an OCM scan of the complete wavelength range when a power change condition is flagged.

Optical channel monitor with built-in sensors for dynamic measurements

A colorless mux/demux cable assembly, including a first fiber optic cable, a second fiber optic cable, and a main body that includes an N:1 optical combiner and a 1:N optical splitter. The N:1 optical combiner is configured to combine individual optical signals received by each of N input fibers of the second fiber optic cable and provide a combined output signal to an output fiber of the first fiber optic cable. The 1:N optical splitter is configured to split a combined input optical signal (having N wavelength channels) received via an input fiber of the first fiber optic cable and provide a split output signal comprising each of the N wavelength channels to each of N output fibers of the second fiber optic cable.

Coherent optical multiplexing 1+1 protection disclosed herein uses multiplexers, each having multiplexing and demultiplexing sub-units. Relay ports of a node are connected with the multiplexers, and each relay port is configured to input and output optical signals with the corresponding multiplexer. Two transmission ports of the node are connected with disjoint paths and are configured to input and output optical signals therewith. The node includes: a first optical splitter having input ports connected with the relay ports and two output ports connected with the two transmission ports; an optical switch connected with the transmission ports respectively via two input interfaces; a second optical splitter, which is a 1×N optical splitter, having one input port connected with an output interface of the optical switch and having output ports connected with the relay ports. The solution is reliable in implementation, has low insertion loss, and has good transmission performance.

Apparatus and method for coherent optical multiplexing 1+1 protection

Coherent optical multiplexing 1+1 protection disclosed herein uses multiplexers, each having multiplexing and demultiplexing sub-units. Relay ports of a node are connected with the multiplexers, and each relay port is configured to input and output optical signals with the corresponding multiplexer. Two transmission ports of the node are connected with disjoint paths and are configured to input and output optical signals therewith. An optoelectronic module includes a housing and a printed circuit board ('PCB') positioned within the housing. A positioning member is coupled to the PCB and includes one or more receptacles each configured to receive and secure positioning of an optical component relative to the PCB. The positioning member may include a plurality of receptacles positioned relative to one another in an arrangement defining a vertical array of receptacles, a lateral array of receptacles, or both. In one form, an optical component, when positioned in a receptacle of the positioning member, is spaced from the PCB. The positioning member may be formed of a thermally insulative or thermally conductive material, and a number of optical fibers may be routed between the positioning member and the housing.

Organizer for fiber optic components

A pluggable bidirectional optical amplifier module may include preamp and booster optical amplifiers and a housing. The preamp optical amplifier may be configured to amplify optical signals traveling in a first direction. The booster optical amplifier may be configured to amplify optical signals traveling in a second direction. The housing may at least partially enclose the preamp optical amplifier and the booster optical amplifier. The pluggable bidirectional optical amplifier module may have a mechanical form factor that is compliant with a pluggable communication module form factor MSA. A colorless mux/demux cable assembly may be operated with the pluggable bidirectional optical amplifier. The colorless mux/demux cable assembly may include a 1:N optical splitter a N:1 optical combiner coupled side-by-side to the 1:N optical splitter, a first fiber optic cable optic cable, and a second fiber optic cable.

Pluggable optical amplifier for datacenter interconnects

Example embodiments are in a form of a system, corresponding electronics card (or apparatus), or corresponding method. Some embodiments include a multi-channel optical layer system. According to some embodiments, the system may include a network interface layer, an adapter layer, and an optical function layer. The adapter layer may learn functions and/or corresponding specifications from the function layer. The adapter layer may configure the adapter layer itself to interoperate between the network interface layer and the optical function layer. The adapter layer may provide flexibility in the size of configured functionality. The adapter layer may reduce cost of configuration (or reconfiguration) because functions may be discretized. New markets may be reached because of this reduced cost, as well as due to smaller size configurations (of hardware and software), reduced electronics, reduced power, and improved thermal cooling requirements for lesser-developed network configurations.

Method and apparatus for modular ROADM and remote DWDM wavelength add/drop

An intranodal reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) fiber management apparatus, and a system employing the apparatus. The apparatus comprises a plurality of ingress optical ports, a plurality of egress optical ports, and a plurality of optical interconnections interposed between ones of the plurality of ingress optical ports and ones of the plurality of egress optical ports. Each of the plurality of ingress optical ports corresponds to one of the plurality of egress optical ports. Each one of the plurality of ingress optical ports is optically coupled by way of the optical interconnections to at least one of the plurality of egress optical ports. Each one of the plurality of egress optical ports is optically coupled by way of the optical interconnections to at least one of the plurality of ingress optical ports.

Intranodal ROADM fiber management apparatuses, systems, and methods

Method and apparatus of an optical routing system ('ORS') capable of automatically discovering intra-nodal fiber connections using a test channel transceiver ('TCT') are disclosed. ORS, in one embodiment, includes a set of reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (&#x201c;ROADM&#x201d;) modules, intra-nodal fiber connections, add-drop modules, and a test module. The ROADM modules are able to transmit or receive optical signals via optical fibers. The intra-nodal fiber connections are configured to provide optical connections. The add-drop modules are able to selectively make connections between input ports and output ports. The test module containing TCT is configured to identify at least a portion of intra-nodal connections of the ROADM via a test signal operating with a unique optical frequency.

Methods and apparatus for providing configuration discovery using intra-nodal test channel

The disclosed methods, apparatus, and systems allow safe and easy deployment of amplifier products that exceed laser safe limits without the need for fiber testing and characterization or OTDR techniques. One example embodiment is a method for ensuring eye safety in an optical network. The example method includes detecting optical connectivity between an output of a transmit amplifier and a passive optical processing element. The transmit amplifier is located at a first network node and is configured to output optical power greater than eye-safe level. The passive optical processing element is located at a second network node and is configured to guarantee a reduction of a maximum optical power level at an output side of the passive optical processing element to an eye-safe optical level. The detecting occurs at the first network node, and the transmit amplifier is enabled or disabled as a function of detection of the optical connectivity.

Laser safety in data centers and other remote sites

Example embodiments include an optical networking system (e.g., apparatus) and corresponding method. According to some embodiments, a plurality of shelves may be interconnected to form a daisy chain, each shelf including unpowered passive optical modules and the daisy chain including an active module having a passive power communication source. The passive power communication source may distribute passive power to memory devices on the one unpowered passive optical networking modules. The memory devices may provide respective communication as a function of interconnections of the daisy chain and passive power distributed by the passive power communication source. Advantages include unique identification of the memory devices without requiring active power to their corresponding modules, and continuous discovery and inventory of such memory devices. Such embodiments may also help network planners better manage and end-to-end optical circuit which may reduce amplification or regeneration nodes creating a more cost efficient solution.

Apparatus and method for inventory of passive module

In today's reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) based optical node, ROADMs multiplex (and demultiplex) colored optical signals to form wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) signals. Transponders connected to the ROADMs' add/drop ports convert noncolored optical signals to colored optical signals (and vice versa). Dedicating transponders to given ports degrades the node's ability to route around network failures. Example embodiments of the invention include an optical node and corresponding method for routing optical signals within an optical node that compensate for this inflexibility. The optical node may include two ROADMs to transmit respective WDM signals onto at least two internode network paths and a routing module that can direct channels of the same wavelength along different internode network paths. Advantageously, a transponder may transmit (receive) different signals at the same wavelength to (from) different network node interfaces within the optical node, thereby improving the optical node's ability to route around network failures.
