A driving method for driving an electrophoretic display comprising four types of particles, the first type of particles and the third type of particles are positively charged, and the second type of particles and the fourth type of particles are negatively charged, the method comprises the steps of: (i). applying a first driving voltage to the pixel of the electrophoretic display for a first period of time at a first amplitude to drive the pixel to a color state of the fourth type of particle at the viewing side; and (ii). applying a second driving voltage to the pixel of the electrophoretic display for a second period of time, opposite to that of the first driving voltage and a second amplitude smaller than that of the first amplitude, to drive the second type particle towards the non-viewing side.

Electro-optic displays and driving methods

A method for driving a display having a plurality of pixels, where each pixel is capable of displaying a first color or a second color and is sandwiched between a first electrode and a pixel electrode, the method including applying a driving sequence which includes: (a) for a first time period, applying a first voltage potential between the first electrode and each of the pixel electrodes of a first group of pixels, and applying no voltage potential between the first electrode and each of the pixel electrodes of a second group of pixels of the second color, thereby causing the display device to display an image of the first color with a background of the second color; and (b) for a second time period, applying no voltage potential between the first electrode and each of the pixel electrodes of the first group of pixels, and applying a second voltage potential to each of the pixel electrodes corresponding to the second group of pixels, to clear the onetime image created in step (a).

Driving methods and circuit for bi-stable displays

The disclosure is directed toward driving methods and a driving circuit which are particularly suitable for bi-stable displays. In certain embodiments, methods provide the fastest and most pleasing appearance to the desired image while maintaining the optimal image quality over the life expectancy of an electrophoretic display device.

The present invention is directed to a color display device in which each pixel can display at least five high-quality color states, and an electrophoretic fluid for such an electrophoretic display. In one aspect, the different types of particles exhibit different levels of attraction force to display different color states. In another aspect, the different types of particles exhibit different levels of mobility in different driving voltage ranges to display different color states.

Color display device

The invention relates to waveforms, circuits and methods for driving bistable displays. The invention is directed to a method, comprising in combination: applying, across a bistable display device, a shaking signal comprising a plurality of positive and negative pulses each driven for a first time to disperse partially packed particles; applying, across the device, one or more first driving signals to first pixels of the device for second times that are sufficient to drive the first pixels to one or more reference states; and concurrently with the first driving signals, applying, across the device, one or more second driving signals to second pixels of the device for third times that are shorter than necessary to drive the second pixels to any of the one or more reference states.

Driving bistable displays

The disclosure relates to waveforms, circuits and methods for driving bistable displays.

A system and method are disclosed for reducing reverse bias in an electrophoretic display. The system and method include the application of varying levels of voltages across an array of electrophoretic display cells of the electrophoretic display to move the cells towards a stable state in a driving cycle. In addition, the system and method disconnect the voltages from the electrophoretic display cells at a time duration prior to reaching step transitions of the voltages during the driving cycle. Pre-driving approaches apply a first pre-driving voltage at a first polarity to the display cells before driving the display cells with a second driving voltage at a second, opposite polarity. Varying the time duration and amplitude of the pre-driving signals produces further beneficial reduction in reverse bias.

Electrophoretic display driving approaches

The invention is directed to methods and compositions useful for improving the performance of electrophoretic displays. The methods comprise adding a conductive filler in the form of nanoparticles and having a volume resistivity of less than about 10ohm cm into at least one electrode protecting layer of the display.

The disclosure relates to driving methods for bistable displays, in particular, driving methods comprising interleaving driving waveforms.

Driving methods for bistable displays

The invention is directed to compositions of display cell structure and electrode protecting layers for improving the performance of display devices. The composition comprises a polar oligomeric or polymeric material having a glass transition temperature below about 100&#xb0; C., and the resulting display cells or electrode protecting layer have an average crosslinking density of below about 1 crosslink point per 80 Dalton molecular weight.

Display cell structure and electrode protecting layer compositions

Driving methods are described for display devices which have one or more dielectric layers in the path of an electric field driving the display. In an embodiment, image uniformity is improved by periodically refreshing, using an intermediate color state, pixels that remain in one color state before and after a change in displaying a first image and a second image, and by applying driving signals using voltage levels and durations that maintain a global DC balance in the display at near zero to avoid contrast reduction and image artifacts in the image.
