A dual-mode capillary electrophoresis system () is disclosed, which comprises a plurality of capillaries for receiving a plurality of samples, a UV radiation source () for generating UV radiation along a first path (PB), a laser light source () for generating laser radiation along a second path (PA), and a galvanometric mirror () configured to receive radiation from said UV radiation source along said first path and to receive light from said laser light source along said second path, and to direct said received UV radiation and said laser light onto a common optical path, said galvanometric minor further being configured to scan said UV radiation and said laser light sequentially over said plurality of capillaries. The system can further include a detector () for detecting the UV radiation as well as a detector () for detecting fluorescent radiation via optical fibers () emitted by the samples in response to laser excitation.

Dual mode scanning optical system for capillary electrophoresis

An analytical system is disclosed. The analytical system includes a storage container configured to store a plurality of capillaries. It also includes a gripper configured to receive at least one of the plurality of capillaries, and move the at least one capillary so that an end of the capillary contacts a sample in a sample container and draws the sample in the capillary. The system also includes a reader configured to detect a signal from the sample in the capillary.

Analytical system with capillary transport

A microscale binding assay, analyte binding array, and kits are disclosed, which exploit the mass action law to harvest analyte from a liquid sample. This is achieved by fabrication of sorbent zones having up to ten times the binding capacity per unit area generally obtained on polystyrene microtiter plates. The resulting arrays substantially deplete the liquid solution of analyte during incubation. Accordingly, the assays respond to total mass of analyte in the sample, not analyte concentration. This approach, coupled with direct fluorescence detection in the NIR, yields maximal signal intensity and low background for optimal sensitivity.

Detection of very low quantities of analyte bound to a solid phase

A method and apparatus for detecting the level of red blood cells, plasma or serum, and organic separation gel in a test tube covered with multiple labels is provided. Visible and infrared light beams are projected onto a test tube. The portions of the light beams that pass through the test tube are detected as a function of position along the vertical axis of the test tube. The levels of the interfaces are then calculated from the detected portions.

Sample level detection system

An apparatus and method for chemical and biological analysis, the apparatus having an optical trapping means to manipulate the reaction substrate, and a measurement means. The optical trapping means is essentially a laser source capable of emitting a beam of suitable wavelength (e.g., Nd:YAG laser). The beam impinges upon a dielectric microparticle (e.g., a 5 micron polystyrene bead which serves as a reaction substrate), and the bead is thus confined at the focus of the laser beam by a radial component of the gradient force. Once 'trapped,' the bead can be moved, either by moving the beam focus, or by moving the reaction chamber. In this manner, the bead can be transferred among separate reaction wells connected by microchannels to permit reactions with the reagent affixed to the bead, and the reagents contained in the individual wells.

Highly sensitive bead-based multi-analyte assay system using optical

The present invention comprises a method for use of a biosensor for in-situ microthermometry. This biosensor is a substantially spherical vesicle impregnated with a dopant which varies its optical emission spectrum as a function of the local environmental temperature of the biosensor in the temperature range to be observed. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, this dopant is the fluorescent dye 6-dodecanoyl-2-dimethylamino-naphthalene (Laurdan.TM.). This method for in-situ measurement of temperature in a biological system uses such a vesicle by introduction of the vesicle into the biological system to be measured and manipulation of the vesicle to the location where temperature is to be measured. The temperature is then calculated from the optically measured generalized polarization at that location and the known relationship between temperature and generalized polarization for the membrane of the vesicle.
