A device may receive first information identifying multiple server devices and second information identifying multiple flows. The device may assign the multiple flows to the multiple server devices in a first order. The device may store the second information in multiple data structures to record the assignment of the multiple flows to the multiple server devices. A data structure, of the multiple data structures, may correspond to a respective server device of the multiple server devices. The device may receive an indication that a server device has been added to, or removed from, the multiple server devices after storing the second information. The device may reassign a subset of the multiple flows in a second order using third information identifying an order in which the multiple flows were assigned to the multiple server devices. The second order may be different from the first order.

Consistent flow assignment in load balancing

In one example, a network device is configured as a leaf node of an interconnected topology that defines a plurality of network paths from the network device to each of a plurality of other leaf nodes of the interconnected topology. The network device includes one or more processing units configured to forward a first packet of a packet flow along a first network path of the plurality of network paths, after receiving a second packet of the packet flow, determine an inactivity interval for the packet flow that represents an amount of time between receipt of the first packet and receipt of the second packet, compare the inactivity interval to a threshold, and when the inactivity interval is greater than the threshold, forward the second packet along a second network path of the plurality of network paths, wherein the second network path is different than the first network path.

Moving packet flows between network paths

In some embodiments, a method includes defining, by a processor included in a first node, a virtual-extensible-local-area-network (VXLAN) tunnel between the first node included in a first layer-two network, and a second node included in a second layer-two network, the VXLAN tunnel traversing at least one node of a layer-three network. The method includes receiving, at the first node, a layer-two data unit that is sent from a third node included in the first layer-two network, to a fourth node included in the second layer-two network. The method includes encapsulating, at the first node, the layer-two data unit to define an encapsulated data unit that includes a VXLAN header. The method includes sending the encapsulated packet from the first node towards the fourth node via the VXLAN tunnel.

Forming a multi-device layer 2 switched fabric using internet protocol (IP)-router / switched networks

In one example, a plurality of network devices forming an Internet protocol (IP) fabric includes first, second, third, and fourth network devices. The first network device includes a plurality of network interfaces communicatively coupled to at least the third and fourth network devices of the plurality of network devices, which are between the first network device and the second network device. The first network device also includes one or more hardware-based processors configured to determine available bandwidths for the third network device and the fourth network device toward the second network device, determine a ratio between the available bandwidths for the third and fourth network devices, and forward data (e.g., packets or bytes) toward the second network device such that a ratio between amounts of the data forwarded to the third and fourth network devices corresponds to the ratio between the available bandwidths.

Using available bandwidths of an IP fabric to intelligently distribute data

A node is configured to receive a packet from a host device, where the packet includes a source address associated with the host device; determine that the source address is not stored by the node; generate one or more logical distances, associated with one or more nodes, based on the source address and a respective address associated with each of the nodes; determine that another node is associated with a shortest logical distance, of the one or more logical distances; and transmit the source address to the other node based on the determination that the other node is associated with the shortest logical distance, where transmitting the source address allows the other node to store the source address or enables further nodes to obtain the source address from the other node.

Scalable forwarding table with overflow address learning

A network device may include a heterogeneously organized TCAM in which entries for different applications implemented by the network device are stored at arbitrary locations in the TCAM. The TCAM may be programmed to include entries, each corresponding to a node of a prefix tree ('trie') data structure, used in processing network traffic received by the network device. The entries in the TCAM may represent multiple different data structures that are heterogeneously stored in the TCAM and each data structure may be used by the network device to implement an application related to processing of network traffic.

TCAM defragmentation for heterogeneous TCAM application support

A network device associates a first node prefix with first network devices provided in a first network, associates a second node prefix with second network devices provided in a second network, and associates a third node prefix with third network devices provided in a third network. The network device advertises the first node prefix to the second and third networks, advertises the second node prefix to the first and third networks, and advertises the third node prefix to the first and second networks.

Forming a multi-device layer 2 switched fabric using internet protocol (IP)-routed / switched networks

A network device may include a heterogeneously organized TCAM in which entries for different applications implemented by the network device are stored at arbitrary locations in the TCAM. The TCAM may be programmed to include entries representing a plurality of prefix tree ('trie') data structures used in processing network traffic received by the network device. The TCAM may also include logic to insert an entry in the TCAM based on a defragmentation operation performed on the TCAM in which a candidate entry having a minimum relocation weight is chosen to be relocated as part of the defragmentation operation, where the relocation weight is determined based on trie depths corresponding to entries that occupy the candidate entry before defragmentation.
