Beam steering device such as optical phased array (OPA) is a key component in applications of solid-state LIDAR and wireless communication. The traditional single-layer OPA results in a significant energy loss due to the substrate leakage caused by the downward coupling from the grating coupler structure. In the present disclosure, we have investigated a structure based on multi-layers SiN/SiOplatform that can form a 3D OPA to emit the light from the edge of the device with a high efficiency, a 2D converged out-coupling beam will be end-fired to the air. The high efficiency and wide horizontal beam steering are demonstrated numerically, the influence of vertical crosstalk, the delay length, number of waveguide layers, and the fabrication feasibility are also discussed.

High-efficiency end-fire 3D optical phased array based on multi-layer platform

A metalens configured to shape the focus light into a flexibly designed pattern. The present teachings demonstrate the engineering of metalens with artificial focus pattern by creating line and ring-shaped focus as 'drawing tools'. These metalens are fabricated through a single layer of silicon-based material through CMOS compatible nano fabrication process. The mechanism to generate artificial focus pattern can be applied to a plethora of future on-chip optical devices with applications ranging from beam engineering to next generation nano lithography.

Integrated Optical Phased Array device is a good potential solution for the solid-state LIDAR technology in the application of autonomous driving technique. However, some difficulties still limit the development of OPA devices, one of them is the conflict between the requirement of fewer units in the phase-tuning system and more elements in the emitting system. The present disclosure provides an approach of a Phase-Combining Waveguide Doubler (PCWD) to address this issue. This device can double the waveguide number without any phase mismatch. It enables the capability to control 2N&#x2212;1 emitting elements with N phase shifters. The device is competitive to any grating coupler array based or end-fire based emitting method, which can potentially satisfy the requirement of a sub-wavelength pitch.

Phase-combining waveguide doubler for optical phased array in solid-state lidar applications

A design for a micro-lens (i.e., a lens on the scale of micrometers) incorporates existing nanofabrication techniques and can be incorporated into High Concentrating Photovoltaic (HCPV), solar thermal collectors, and traditional flat PV systems. Using the theory of wave optics, the design is able to achieve a high numerical aperture, i.e., it can receive light over a wider range of angles. The design also reduces the distance the focal point shifts as the light source shifts; this eliminates the need for a tracking system in CPV and PV applications. Reducing the lens size also facilitates smaller, lightweight CPV systems, which makes CPV attractive for additional applications. Finally, these concentrators reduce the exchanging area of a typical flat solar thermal system where heat is received, which improves the overall system's efficiency and allows its use also during rigid winter time.

Integrated micro-lens for photovoltaic cell and thermal applications

A vehicle line-of-sight optical communication system and method for use in ad hoc networks formed with a vehicle during traveling of the vehicle along a roadway. The communication system includes: an electronic control unit (ECU) having an electronic processor that operates under control of a program to process messages sent or received by the communication system; at least one light source that comprises a part of a vehicle external lamp module; a driver circuit electrically connected to the ECU to energize the light source(s) in response to a transmission signal from the ECU so as to send messages via the light source(s); at least one light sensor that comprises a part of the vehicle external lighting system; and a receiver circuit electrically connected to the ECU to provide the ECU with a reception signal indicative of messages received via the light sensor(s).
