A mechanical assembly includes a power semiconductor device located inside of a mechanical enclosure, and a magnetic component located outside of the mechanical enclosure and operably connected to the power semiconductor device. The power semiconductor device and the magnetic component are cooled via a common air pathway outside of the mechanical enclosure. A power converter includes a powered semiconductor device located inside of a mechanical enclosure, the power semiconductor device configured to convert DC input power to AC output power, and an inductor located outside of the mechanical enclosure and operably connected to the power semiconductor device. The power semiconductor device and the magnetic component are cooled via a common air pathway outside of the mechanical enclosure.

A transportation refrigeration system including: a transportation refrigeration unit comprising a motor; a power conversion unit configured convert an amplitude, a frequency and a phase of an input electrical power signal, wherein the power conversion unit comprises a first power bridge, a DC link and a second power bridge; an energy storage device configured to supply electrical power to the motor via the power conversion unit during a road mode; a first switch configured to selectively connect the first power bridge to the energy storage device or the motor; and a second switch configured to selectively connect the second power bridge to the motor or a power grid; wherein the first switch and second switch are positioned to connect the first power bridge and second power bridge to specified sources and outputs during each of the road mode and the standby mode.

A voltage conversion system includes an energy storage device; a power conversion unit connected to the energy storage device, the power conversion unit comprising: an inductor, the inductor comprising a number of coils that are non-coupled or weakly coupled, with a coupling coefficient less than 0.05; a multi-phase boost stage coupled to the inductor, wherein the multiphase boost stage comprises a number of phases that equals the number of coils; an inverter coupled to the multiphase boost stage; and a load coupled to the power conversion unit.

A heat sink assembly is disclosed for cooling a power electronics module, such as a variable frequency drive. The heat sink assembly includes a housing and a heat sink structure. The housing defines an interior chamber for enclosing the power electronics module and also defines a cooling air flow channel exterior to the interior chamber. The heat sink structure is disposed in conductive heat transfer relationship with the interior chamber and has a heat transfer surface positioned within the exterior cooling air flow channel in convective heat transfer relationship with the cooling air flow.
