A PE and a method of forwarding packet are provided. According to an example of the method, when receiving a packet, the PE may determine a vPort associated to a port through which the packet is received. When a forwarding entry adding condition is satisfied, the PE may add a first forwarding entry in a forwarding table by recording the first vPort as an egress port, a source MAC address of the packet as a MAC address and an VLAN identifier of the VLAN associated with the first vPort as a VLAN identifier. Subsequently, the PE may search the forwarding table for a second forwarding entry matching the destination MAC address of the packet and the VLAN to which the packet belongs. The PE may search a port associating relationship table for a port associated to a second vPort in the second forwarding entry to forward the packet.

Packet forwarding method and port extender

A member device of a stacked switches system receives a packet which is to be sent to every member device in the stack groups of the stacked switches system. The member device identifies an intra-group port and an aggregated stack link group which permit forwarding the packet based on an ingress member device identification of the packet. The member device sends the packet carrying the ingress member device identification via the identified intra-group stack port, via the identified aggregated stack link group and via a local data port.

According to an example, in a stacked switches system, a member device in a first stack group collects stacking information of the first stack group and identifies a physical topology of the first stack group. Then, the member device collects stacking information of all stack groups in the stacked switches system, and identifies a physical topology of the stacked switches system.

Topology discovery in a stacked switches system

A member device of a stacked switches system sends a first received unicast packet via an inter-group stack port which belongs to an aggregated stack link group on a forwarding path towards a different stack group when the first received unicast packet is to be egressed by another member device in the different stack group. The member device is further to send a second received unicast packet via an intra-group stack port on a forwarding path towards another member device in a same stack group when the second received unicast packet which is to be egressed by the another member device in the same stack group. The member device is further to send a third received unicast packet via a data port on the member device which associates with a egress port identification of the third received unicast packet when the third received unicast packet is to be egressed by the member device.

A stacked switches system may include multiple stack member devices, which belong to more than two stack groups. Number of the stack groups is less than number of the stack member devices. Stack member devices in a same stack group may be connected with each other via a first stack link. Each stack member device may be connected with a stack member device in an adjacent stack group via a second stack link.

Connecting stack member devices in stacked switches systems

A stacking port extension member receives a packet, forwards the packet according to a destination port number of the packet when a destination forwarding chip identifier (ID) of the packet is a local forwarding chip ID, determine whether the packet is transmitted to a lower-level stacking port extension member when the destination forwarding chip ID of the packet is not the local forwarding chip ID, forward the packet according to a configured forwarding relationship towards the lower-level stacking port extension member when it is determined that the packet is transmitted to the lower-level stacking port extension member, and otherwise, directly forward the packet through a locally configured uplink second-level stacking port.
