Surgical marker systems and methods for delineating a lesion margin of a subject are provided. An example system includes a handheld probe device configured to capture an optical coherence tomography (OCT) image and a processor coupled to a memory. The handheld probe device includes a handheld probe including a fiber-optic probe assembly and a marker assembly. The processor is configured to: segment, by a neural network, each pixels of the OCT into different tissue-type categories; generate one or more feature vectors based at least in part on the segmented pixels; determine, by a one-class classifier, a boundary location in the OCT image between a normal tissue and an abnormal tissue of the tissue structure; and control the marker assembly to selectively create a visible label on a tissue location of the subject, the tissue location corresponding to the boundary location.

Intelligent surgical marker

Optically computed phase imaging systems and methods are provided. An example system includes an interferometer configured to output 3D spatial-spectral data of a sample including an interferometric signal and an optical computation assembly having a spatial light modulator configured to modulate the 3D spatial-spectral data with a modulation pattern. The modulation pattern modulates the interferometric signal along a spectral dimension to select a depth to obtain a sample signal at the selected depth and modulates the interferometric signal along a first spatial dimension to create a waveform to facilitate phase extraction. The system further includes a detector configured to detect 2D spatial data of the sample. The system further includes a processor coupled to a memory, the processor configured to process the 2D spatial data to extract phase information of the sample.

Optically computed phase microscopy

An apparatus comprising: a double path interferometer comprising a sample path for an object and a reference path; a source of linearly polarized light for the double path interferometer, a phase plate positioned in the sample path; means for superposing the sample path and reference path to create a beam of light for detection; means for spatially modulating the beam of light to produce a modulated beam of light; means for dispersing the modulated beam of light to produce a spatially modulated and dispersed beam of light; a first detector; a second detector, and means for splitting the spatially modulated and dispersed beam of light, wherein light of a first linear polarization is directed to the first detector and light of a second linear polarization, orthogonal to the first linear polarization, is directed to the second detector.

Apparatus, systems and methods for detecting light

An optically computed optical coherence tomography (OC-OCT) technology is disclosed. The OC-OCT system performs depth resolved imaging by computing the Fourier transform of the interferometric spectra optically. The OC-OCT system modulates the interferometric spectra with Fourier basis function projected to a spatial light modulator and detects the modulated signal without spectral discrimination. The optical computation strategy enables volumetric OCT imaging without performing mechanical scanning and without the need for Fourier transform in a computer. OC-OCT performs Fourier transform signal processing optically, without the need of mechanical scanning, and before data acquisition unlike traditional OCT methods and systems. The scan-less OCT imaging is achieved through the use of spatial light modulator (SLM) that precisely manipulates light wave to generate output with desired amplitude and phase.

Scan-less optically computed optical coherence tomography using a spatial light modulator

A miniature quantitative optical coherence elastography system with an integrated Fabry-Perot force sensor for in situ elasticity measurement of biological tissue is provided. The technique has great potential for biomechanics modeling and clinical diagnosis. The qOCE system contains a fiber-optic probe that exerts a compressive force to deform tissue at the tip of the probe. Using the space-division multiplexed optical coherence tomography signal detected by a spectral domain optical coherence tomography engine, probe deformation in proportion to the force applied is quantified, as well as the tissue deformation corresponding to the external stimulus. Simultaneous measurement of force and displacement allows for calculation of Young's modulus from the biological tissue. The provided system has had its effectiveness validated on tissue mimicking phantoms, as well as biological tissues, with the advantages of being minimal invasive and also not requiring the use of external agents or substantial pre-measuring preparation.

Miniature quantitative optical coherence elastography using a fiber-optic probe with a fabry-perot cavity

A dark field endoscopic microscope includes an illumination system, an objective lens unit arranged in an optical path of the illumination system, an optical fiber bundle optically coupled to the objective lens unit, and an observation system arranged in an optical return path from the optical fiber bundle. The illumination system provides oblique off-axial illumination while axial rays are at least attenuated.

A surgical tool system according to an embodiment of the current invention includes a surgical tool, and an interferometry system optically coupled to the surgical tool. The surgical tool includes a body section, a sensor section at least one of attached to or integral with the body section, and a surgical section at least one of attached to or integral with the sensor section at an opposing end of the sensor section from the body section. The sensor section comprises an interferometric optical sensor defining a reference distance that changes in response to at least one of a force or a torque when applied to the surgical section of the surgical tool.

An optical coherence tomography (OCT) system having magnitude and direction of motion detection has a light source, and a scanning system arranged in an optical path of the light source. The scanning system is configured to scan an illumination beam of light in a spatial pattern around each of a plurality of points of interest of an object under observation for a corresponding plurality of instants of time in which each of the plurality of points of interest are displaced from each other due to motion of at least one of the OCT system or the object under observation. The OCT system also includes an OCT detection system configured and arranged to receive at least a portion of the illumination beam of light after being at least one of reflected or scattered from said the under observation, and a signal processor configured to communicate with the OCT detection system to receive detection signals therefrom. The signal processor is configured to process the detection signals to determine both magnitude and direction of relative motion of the OCT system from a first one of the plurality of points at a first corresponding time to a second one of the plurality of points at a second corresponding time.

Optical coherence tomography systems and methods with magnitude and direction tracking of transverse motion

A lateral-distortion corrected optical coherence tomography system. The system can include an optical coherence tomography sensor, a light source, a fiber-optic system arranged to provide a reference beam and an observation beam, an optical detection system arranged to receive combined light from the reference beam and the observation beam and to provide detection signals, and a data processing system arranged to communicate with the optical detection system and receive the detection signals. The data processing system can be configured to assemble an image corresponding to a scanning path by constructing a plurality of A-scans from the detection signals, determining displacement information from the plurality of A-scans, and arranging the plurality of A-scans according to the displacement information.

Lateral distortion corrected optical coherence tomography system

An axial motion distortion-corrected optical coherence tomography system. The system can include an optical coherence tomography sensor, a light source, a fiber-optic system arranged to provide a reference beam and an observation beam, an optical detection system arranged to receive combined light from the reference beam and the observation beam and to provide detection signals, and a data processing system arranged to receive said detection signals, construct a plurality of A-scans from said detection signals, and construct one or more images from said plurality of A-scans. The data processing system can be configured to correct distortion in the images caused by net axial motion of at least one of said optical coherence tomography sensor or a target of said optical coherence tomography sensor by calculating an estimate of the net axial motion using Doppler shift, and then shifting the A-scans according to the estimate.

Distortion corrected optical coherence tomography system

A probe for a common path optical coherence tomography system includes a sheath having a proximal end and a distal end and defining a lumen therein, a single mode optical fiber disposed within the lumen of the sheath such that a portion of the single mode optical fiber extends beyond the distal end of the sheath. The single mode optical fiber has an end face for transmitting and receiving light. The probe also includes a layer of hardened epoxy encasing the portion of the single mode optical fiber that extends beyond the distal end of the sheath except for the end face. The single mode optical fiber has an optical axis extending along a longitudinal direction of the single mode optical fiber. The hardened epoxy is polished at a non-orthogonal angle relative to the optical axis at the end face.

A system for assessing the flow of a fluid. The system can include a light source, a fiber-optic system optically coupled to the light source, which is arranged to provide a reference beam and an observation beam, an optical detection system arranged to receive combined light from the reference beam and the observation beam and to provide detection signals, and a data processing system arranged to communicate with the optical detection system to receive the detection signals. The data processing system can be configured to use the detection signals to determine a speckle pattern corresponding to the fluid flow, wherein the speckle pattern includes a plurality of lines, and to calculate a correlation between adjacent lines perpendicular to the flow to determine at least one of a rate of the flow and a displacement of the flow.

System and method for assessing the flow of a fluid

A method for calibrating a Fourier domain optical coherence tomography system includes receiving spectral data from an optical detector comprising a linear array of detector elements, each detector element having a position labeled n, wherein detected light was wavelength-dispersed across the linear array of detector elements; determining parameters of a preselected functional relationship between wave number, kn, corresponding to detector element n as a function of optical detector element n based on the spectral data; further receiving subsequent spectral data subsequent to the first-mentioned receiving, wherein detected light was wavelength-dispersed across the linear array of detector elements; converting the subsequent spectral data using the preselected functional relationship between wave number kn and optical detector element n to obtain converted spectral data; and performing an inverse Fourier transform of the converted spectral data to obtain a depth profile.
