An electronic device may include first and second antennas formed from respective first and second segments of a housing. The first antenna may have a first feed coupled to the first segment by a first switch and coupled to the first segment by a first conductive trace. The second antenna may have a second feed coupled to the second segment by a second switch and coupled to the second segment by a second conductive trace. The first segment may be separated from the second segment by a single gap, a data connector may pass through the second segment, and the antennas may selectively cover a low band. Alternatively, the first segment may be separated from the second segment by a third segment and two gaps, the data connector may pass through the third segment, and the first and second antennas may concurrently cover the low band.

Electronic devices with multiple low band antennas

An electronic device may have peripheral conductive housing structures, a display frame, a support plate, a logic board, and an antenna. The antenna may have a resonating element that includes a first slot between the logic board and a segment of the peripheral conductive housing structures, a second slot between the display frame and the segment, and optionally a third slot between the support plate and the segment. The slots may be at least partially overlapping, may have respective lengths, may be located at respective distances from a cover layer for the display, and may collectively receive radio-frequency signals in a frequency band such as the L5 GPS band. Switching circuitry and filter circuitry may be coupled to the antenna feed and/or to the antenna feed (s) of one or more adjacent antennas in the electronic device to help to isolate the antennas from each other.

Electronic devices with distributed slot antenna structures

An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry. The wireless circuitry may include one or more antennas and transceiver circuitry such as millimeter wave transceiver circuitry. The antennas may be formed from metal traces on printed circuits. A flexible printed circuit may have an area on which the transceiver circuitry is mounted. Protruding portions may extend from the area on which the transceiver circuitry is mounted and may be separated from the area on which the transceiver circuitry is mounted by bends. Antenna resonating elements such as patch antenna resonating elements and dipole resonating elements may be formed on the protruding portions and may be used to transmit and receive millimeter wave antenna signals through dielectric-filled openings in a metal electronic device housing or a dielectric layer such as a display cover layer formed from glass or other dielectric.

Training a link between a physical layer transceiver and a link partner includes encoding, at the physical layer transceiver, a first number of training bits into a second number of encoded training bits, expanding at the physical layer transceiver the second number of encoded training bits into a third number of expanded training bits, and interpolating at the physical layer transceiver, in a first mode, between the third number of expanded training bits and a fourth number of interpolated training bits. The fourth number is more than twice the third number, and may be four times the third number. Such training may further include interpolating at the physical layer transceiver, in a second mode, between the third number of expanded training bits and the fourth number of interpolated training bits, fourth number being twice the third number. The second mode may be used when the first mode is not supported.

Method and apparatus for enhanced link training in a wireline communications system

An electronic device may be provided with a housing and an antenna having a resonating element. The resonating element may have first and second arms extending from opposing sides of a feed. The first arm and a portion of the housing may radiate in a cellular ultra-high band. The first arm may have a fundamental mode that radiates in a first ultra-wideband (UWB) communications band at 6.5 GHz. The second arm may have a fundamental mode that radiates in a 5.0 GHz wireless local area network band. The first and second arms may have a harmonic mode that radiates in a second UWB communications band at 8.0 GHz. The antenna may convey radio-frequency signals in each of these communications bands without the need for adjusting components in the antenna to switch between the UWB communications bands.

Electronic devices having enclosure-coupled multi-band antenna structures

An electronic device may include a conductive housing and an antenna. The antenna may include an arm formed from a first segment of the housing. A gap may separate the first segment from a second segment. The antenna may include a feed coupled to a transmission line having a signal conductor. The feed may include first and second positive terminals on the first segment and a third positive terminal on the second segment. An adjustable component may be coupled between the first and third terminals. The signal conductor may be coupled to the first terminal. A wide conductive trace may be coupled between the signal conductor and the second terminal. A switch may be interposed on the signal conductor. The second terminal may cover a cellular low band when the switch is open. The first terminal may cover the cellular low band and higher bands when the switch is closed.

Electronic device antennas having switchable feed terminals

An electronic device such as a wristwatch may have a housing with metal portions such as metal sidewalls. The housing may form an antenna ground for an antenna. An antenna resonating element for the antenna may be formed from a stack of capacitively coupled component layers such as a display layer, touch sensor layer, and near-field communications antenna layer at a front face of the device. An additional antenna may be formed from a peripheral resonating element that runs along a peripheral edge of the device and the antenna ground. A rear face antenna may be formed using a wireless power receiving coil as a radio-frequency antenna resonating element or may be formed from metal antenna traces on a plastic support for light-based components.

Electronic device antennas

An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry. The wireless circuitry may include one or more antennas. The antennas may include millimeter wave antenna arrays formed from arrays of patch antennas, dipole antennas or other millimeter wave antennas on millimeter wave antenna array substrates. Circuitry such as upconverter and downconverter circuitry may be mounted on the substrates. The upconverter and downconverter may be coupled to wireless communications circuitry such as a baseband processor circuit using an intermediate frequency signal path. The electronic device may have opposing front and rear faces. A display may cover the front face. A rear housing wall may cover the rear face. A metal midplate may be interposed between the display and rear housing wall. Millimeter wave antenna arrays may transmit and receive antenna signals through the rear housing wall.

Electronic device with millimeter wave antenna arrays

An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry. The wireless circuitry may include multiple antennas and transceiver circuitry. The antennas may include antenna structures at opposing first and second ends of the electronic device. The antenna structures at a given end of the device may include antenna structures that are shared between multiple antennas. The electronic device may include a first antenna with an inverted-F antenna resonating element formed from portions of a peripheral conductive housing structure and may have an antenna ground that is separated from the antenna resonating element by a gap. A return path may bridge the gap. The electronic device may also include a second antenna that includes the antenna ground and an additional antenna resonating element. The antenna resonating element of the second antenna may be parasitically coupled to the return path of the inverted-F antenna at given frequencies.

Electronic device having shared antenna structures

An electronic device may include wireless circuitry with antennas. An antenna resonating element arm for an antenna may be formed from conductive housing structures running along the edges of the device. The antenna may have first and second antenna feeds and multiple adjustable components that bridge a slot between the antenna resonating element and an antenna ground. Control circuitry may control the adjustable components and selectively activate one of the first and second feeds at a given time to place the antenna in first, second, or third operating modes. The control circuitry may determine which operating mode to use based on information indicative of the operating environment of the device. By switching between the operating modes, the control circuitry may shift current hot spots across the length of the resonating element arm to ensure satisfactory performance of the antenna in a variety of operating conditions.

Antennas having symmetrical switching architecture

An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry that includes one or more antennas and a transceiver. An integrated circuit may be coupled between the transceiver and the antenna and may include multiple tunable components such that tune the response of the antenna. The control signals may be generated by a tuning controller external to the integrated circuit. Shared control interface circuitry may be formed on the integrated circuit for interfacing between the tuning controller and each of the tunable components on the integrated circuit. The control interface circuitry may include a conductive path and decoupling circuitry that routes the control signals to corresponding control inputs on each of the tunable components. Sharing the control interface circuitry between each tunable component on the integrated circuit may minimize the space required on the integrated circuit for controlling the response of the antenna.

Electronic device having antenna tuning circuits with shared control interface circuitry

An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry, a conductive housing, and a display. The display may have an active area that displays image data and an inactive area that does not display image data. The active area may completely surround the inactive area at a front face of the device. A speaker port may be aligned with the inactive area and may emit sound through the inactive area. The wireless circuitry may include first and second antenna arrays. The first array may be configured to transmit and receive wireless signals at frequencies between 10 GHz and 300 GHz through the inactive area of the display. The second array may be configured to transmit and receive wireless signals at frequencies between 10 GHz and 300 GHz through a slot in a rear wall of the conductive housing. Control circuitry may perform beam steering using the first and second arrays.
