A system and method are disclosed for producing a continuous filament reinforced thermoplastic profile having consistent cross section. A continuous reinforcing filament is pre-wetted with a first thermoplastic resin and introduced into a die, where it is contacted with a second thermoplastic resin extruded from an extruder at melt state. The temperature of the die is carefully controlled so that the pre-wetted filament and first resin do not cure or solidify until after they have contacted and mixed with the second thermoplastic resin. The mixture temperature is then controlled to make a substantially solidified profile pre-shape. A capping layer comprising a third thermoplastic resin is then co-extruded onto the outer surface of the pre-shape. A multistage die for bringing together the filament and thermoplastic resins and for maintaining appropriate temperatures at each stage of the profile-forming process is also disclosed.

System and die for forming a continuous filament reinforced structural plastic profile by pultrusion/coextrusion

The disclosure is directed to a multilayer film including a first layer and a second layer. The first layer has a fluorinated polymer. The second layer has a melt strain-hardening component and forms no more than about 30% by volume of the multilayer film.

Draw resonant resistant multilayer films

A clear multilayer film for coating synthetic environmental surfaces includes an exposed protective layer and an underlying cushioning layer. The exposed layer is primarily a polymer blend of a fluorine substituted olefin polymer, such as polyvinylidene fluoride, with an acrylic polymer. The cushioning layer is of a low modulus polymer selected from among impact modified acrylic polymer, ethylene vinyl acetate polymer and metallocene catalyzed polyethylene and having an elastic modulus below about 30,000 psi (207 MPa). The cushioning layer should be substantially free of all fluorinated polymers. The multilayer film can have an optional additional thermally adhesive layer of a blend of a fluorine substituted olefin polymer with an acrylic polymer. The multi layer film offers superior protection to such substrates as outdoor building siding, vehicle body panels, and signs from stains, weather conditions, and especially impact damage. Ally of the layers can also include fillers and additives adapted to provide a very low gloss appearance.
