Apparatus, methods, systems and devices for high aperture ratio, high transmittance, and wide viewing angle liquid crystal display having first and second substrates each with an alignment layer and polarizer on the interior and exterior surface thereof and a liquid crystal material therebetween forming plural pixels each having a common electrode group and a pixel electrode group each having at least one common and pixel electrode. A fringe field drives the molecules in the regions above and below the electrodes and a horizontal field drives the molecules between the electrode groups to achieve high transmittance. In an embodiment an insulating layer separates the substrate and alignment layer and the pixel electrodes are on the substrate and the common electrodes are on the insulating layer. In another embodiment a compensation film is layered between one of the substrates and corresponding polarizer.

Liquid crystal display device having patterned electrodes for repetitive divided horizontal electric field and fringing electric field

A circular polarizer comprising a single linear polarizer producing a linear state of polarization and at least one phase retardation film layered with the single linear polarizer. In a first embodiment, the at least one phase retardation film includes at least one uniaxial A-plate phase retardation film and at least one uniaxial C-plate phase retardation film. In a second embodiment of the invention, the circular polarizer includes a linear polarizer and at least one biaxial phase retardation film layered with the linear polarizer. In another example of the circular polarize of the second embodiment, at least one uniaxial A-plate phase retardation film and/or at least one uniaxial C-plate phase retardation film is also layer with the linear polarize and the biaxial phase retardation film.

Wide-acceptance-angle circular polarizers

The apparatus, methods, system and devices of the present invention provides transflective LCD system structure wherein each pixel is composed of at least three reflective sub-pixels and at least one transmissive sub-pixel. The reflective sub-pixels have a color filter layer for displaying color reflective images and the transmissive sub-pixel it is driven by color sequential imaging method for displaying a color transmissive image. The configuration of the sub-pixels and the location of the sub-pixel electronics increases the aperture ratio of both transmissive sub-pixel and reflective sub-pixel to improve the image brightness and lower the overall power consumption of the device.

Transflective liquid crystal display

A display includes pixel circuits, each pixel circuit including a first electrode, a second electrode, a third electrode, and a liquid crystal layer doped with a chiral material. The first electric is electrically coupled to a first reference voltage. The second electrode receives a pixel voltage corresponding to a gray scale level, the second electrode including a conducting layer having openings. The third electrode is electrically coupled to a second reference voltage. The second electrode is between the first and third electrodes, and the liquid crystal layer is between the first and second electrodes.

Liquid crystal display

A display includes a plurality of pixel circuits, each pixel circuit including a first electrode, a second electrode, a reflective region, and a transmissive region. The reflective region reflects ambient light and includes a first portion of a liquid crystal layer and a polarization dependent reflector. The transmissive region transmits backlight and includes a second portion of the liquid crystal layer. A dielectric layer is between the first and second electrodes in one of the reflective region and the transmissive region, the dielectric layer configured such that when a pixel voltage is applied to the first and second electrodes, the percentage of the pixel voltage applied across the first portion of the liquid crystal layer is different from the percentage of the pixel voltage applied across the second portion of the liquid crystal layer. The display includes a backlight module to generate the backlight.

Transflective liquid crystal display comprising a dielectric layer between the first and second electrodes in the transmissive region

A transflective liquid crystal display with uniform cell gap configuration throughout the transmissive and the reflective display region is invented. Mutually complementary common electrode pattern and reflector pattern or mutually complementary ITO pixel electrode pattern and reflector pattern produce an electric field in the transmissive display region that has a uniform longitudinal field and an electric field in the reflective display region that is a fringing field. An initially vertically aligned negative dielectric anisotropic nematic liquid crystal material between the electrodes forms a smaller tilt angle with respect to the substrate normal in the reflective display region while a larger tilt angle with respect to the substrate normal in the transmissive display region. Consequently, the ambient incident light experiences smaller phase retardation in the reflective display region while the light from the backlight source experiences larger phase retardation. Since the ambient light passes through the reflective display region twice while the light from the backlight source passes through the transmissive display region only once, by properly designing the electrodes and the reflector width, the light from both ambient light source and backlight source will experience almost the same phase retardation in both reflective and transmissive display regions. As a result, the electro-optical performance curves of both-transmissive display mode and reflective display mode overlap.

Transflective liquid crystal display having mutually complementary patterned electrode and reflector

A transflective display includes pixels each including a first electrode, a second electrode, a liquid crystal layer associated with the first and second electrodes, and a conductive reflective layer between the liquid crystal layer and the second electrode to reflect ambient light. The conductive reflective layer is insulated from the second electrode and covers less than all of the second electrode to allow backlight to be transmitted through a portion of the pixel not covered by the conductive reflective layer.

Transflective LCD with reflective layer connected to reference voltage greater than 0.5 Vrms and less than LC threshold voltage

A novel transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) is provided with a multilayer dielectric film transflector. The dielectric transflector is composed of alternating high and low refractive index dielectric material layers deposited directly on the inner side of the LCD substrate to avoid parallax. The transmittance of the dielectric transflector can vary from approximately 5% to approximately 95% by simply adjusting the individual dielectric layer thickness and the arrangement of layers. The thickness of the 10-layer film is approximately 700 nm, which does not affect the voltage drop on the LC. Two structures of the dielectric film using different positions of the materials of construction are provided and demonstrated. Such a transflective LCD exhibits outstanding features, such as, robust dielectric film, single cell gap, no parallax, and a simple fabrication process.

Transflective LCD using multilayer dielectric film transflector

A liquid crystal display having a positive A-film and a negative A-film between a top polarizer and a bottom polarizer to increase the viewing angle of the liquid crystal display by reducing or eliminating light leakage at voltage-off state when viewed from an oblique angle. Method of increasing the viewing angle of the liquid crystal display by reducing or eliminating light leakage at voltage-off stage when viewed from an oblique angle. The compensation is applicable to use with liquid crystal displays having a liquid crystal layer that is homogenously aligned at off-state when no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer, such as IPS and FFS mode liquid crystal displays.

Multi-film compensated liquid crystal display with initial homogeneous alignment

A liquid crystal display having at least one of high contrast ratio, high reflectance, and low color dispersion is disclosed. Based on the total boundary residual retardation, the corresponding compensation film and polar conditions may be calculated. Using the compensation film and polarizer conditions, a general film compensated reflective twisted-nametic liquid crystal display (GF-RTN-LCD) may be obtained.

General film compensated reflective LCD having LC layer with middle layer satisfying a predetermined relationship between phase retardation and half residual phase depending on an external electric field

Inhomogeneous concentrated polymer network with approximately 90&#xb0; twisted nematic liquid crystal (TN-LC) is used for fabricating lens and prisms. For forming a positive lens, the approximately 90&#xb0; TN-LC polymer network concentration can gradually decrease from the center to the side edges. For forming a negative lens, the approximately 90&#xb0; TN-LC polymer network concentration can gradually increase from the center to the side edges. The lens can be created by ultra violet (UV) light exposure to patterned photo masks. The lens can be tuned by applying voltage above the threshold voltage to the polymer network. The inhomogeneous 90&#xb0; TN-LC polymer network can also be used in Fresnel lens and prisms. Applications of the invention can be used for micro lens, array, optical communication, micro-optics, adaptive optics and beam steering.
