Methods and devices are provided for promoting wound healing. In general, surgical staplers and stapler components are provided having a coating thereon that is configured to selectively control an interaction between at least one matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor and an outer surface of the stapler or stapler component.

A disposable dressing forms a compartment around and above a wound site and a volatile antimicrobial compound is allowed to sublimate/evaporate into the compartment. Novel antimicrobial compositions and coatings are disclosed. The antimicrobial compositions consist of mixtures of taurolidine and protamine, including protamine salts. The antimicrobial compositions are particularly useful in coatings for implantable medical devices. The antimicrobial compositions are effective against a broad spectrum of microbes.
