A method of treating a cancerous region in a breast and/or in the head of a patient using a single radiosurgery device by placing the irradiation unit on an axle is disclosed. By pivoting the whole irradiation system, the treatment space can face different directions to accommodate the site of treatment. By continuously or sequentially pivoting the irradiation head unit and assigning different irradiation times to different pivoting angles, not only maximum degrees of expansion of the solid angle can be used for focusing the radiation beams to the target but also different regions of non-target tissues can have different shares of radiation doses based on how critical and radiation tolerant they are.

Radiosurgery of cancers in the breast and the head using a single multi-source gamma-ray device

Techniques for suppression of motion artifacts in medical imaging include obtaining projections at different times within a time interval from a medical imaging system operating on a subject. A stationary projection is determined for a first subset of the projections in which a signal source and detector array of the imaging system are in a first configuration relative to the subject. An image of the subject based on the stationary projection is displayed. For any subset, the stationary projection is a minimum value for each pixel among the subset of projections if a signal passing through a moving object of interest inside the subject is expected to cause an increase in a pixel value. Alternatively, the stationary projection is a maximum value for each pixel among the subset of projections if the signal passing through the object of interest is expected to cause a decrease in a pixel value.

A maxillofacial or cranial-facial surgical stabilizer comprising a head frame fully or partially surrounding the head of a patient at an angle running from ears to temple, and that is fixated to the skull of the patient by multiple screws and/or ear holders and screws. One or more flexible/locking arms are removably attached to the head frame for holding and positioning a plurality of interchangeable instruments or accessories. One flexible/locking arm is a medial/center arm accessorized with a dental arch mold. A method of using a head frame to position the pieces of bones during maxillofacial or cranio-facial surgery is also provided.

Method and system for stereotactic intensity-modulated arc therapy

A method and device for accurately positioning patients for imaging and radiotherapy is disclosed. The device includes a support platform (such as a bed, a table, a couch, a chair, etc.) connected to a fixed base by at least two and preferably four offset supporting arms. The support arms are journaled into the support platform at passive-rotatable pivot joints and are journaled into the base at active-rotatable pivot points. The base contains actuators (manual or powered by motors, pneumatics or hydraulics) for articulating the support arms. The relative lengths of the support arms may be varied to create a pre-defined trajectory of the support platform, between a starting spatial position and orientation to an ending spatial position and orientation, and through a continuous range there between. This makes it possible to position a patient within a range from a low, standing up position to a high, forwarding, prone or supine position, or vice versa.

Method and device for patient loading and positioning

A method of treating a cancerous region in a breast of a patient comprising (i) imaging the breast in a three-dimensional coordinate system, (ii) stereotactically determining the location of the cancerous region in the breast, (iii) optionally determining the volume of the entire cancerous region to be treated, and (iv) while maintaining the breast in a three-dimensional coordinate system that is identical to or corresponds with the three-dimensional coordinate system used in (i), noninvasively exposing the cancerous region of the breast of the patient to a cancer-treatment effective dose of radiation; and equipment for use in such a method.

Method and equipment for image-guided stereotactic radiosurgery of breast cancer

A method and device for image guided dynamic radiation treatment of prostate cancer and other pelvic lesions including: 1) a unique fan geometry of radiation sources; 2) a special collimation method and apparatus to sculpt the radiation borders; 3) an integrated three-dimensional imager and a special tissue interface imaging system to locate and track critical boundaries in real-time; 4) a dynamic patient support system, which is shared by the said imager and the irradiation system; and 5) motorized custom shielding filters to further protect neighboring normal tissues such as the kidneys and femoral heads. The fan geometry utilizes a plural number of radiation sources arranged specifically for irradiating tumors in the human pelvis while not harming critical structures, and the collimation sculpts the radiation borders using motorized shields for different sensitive structures. This allows high doses of radiation to be delivered to lesions within the human pelvis, such as the prostate, while sparing its surrounding structures, such as the rectum and bladder, as well as the urethra that is contained inside the prostate.

Method and device for image guided dynamic radiation treatment of prostate cancer and other pelvic lesions

Techniques for background subtraction in computed tomography include determining voxels in a slice of interest in a three dimensional computed tomography scan of the interior of a body based on a first set of measurements of radiation transmitted through the body. Based on the first set of measurements, a first background image for radiation transmitted through the body in a first direction is determined without the effects of the voxels in the slice of interest. A current image is determined based on a different current measurement of radiation transmitted through the body in the first direction. A first difference is determined between the current image and the first background image. The result is a high contrast image in the slice of interest even from a single current projection image.

A method of imaging a breast comprising (i) having a patient lie prone on a computer-controlled couch, which comprises a channel or left and right openings, and position the left or right breast of the patient in the channel or the left or right opening, respectively, and (ii) repeatedly imaging the breast using a scanning x-ray source while moving the couch down and up, such that the breast moves down and up in the field between the source of radiation and the detector, which method can further comprise constructing a three-dimensional image of the breast in its natural shape and analyzing the three-dimensional image of the breast; and a system for use in such a method.

A system and method for delivering radiation treatment to a moving target within a patient according to a preprogrammed treatment plan including determining a difference between a surrogate signal representing a physical characteristic associated with said patient's actual breathing pattern during radiation treatment delivery and a tracking signal representing a physical characteristic associated with said patient's expected breathing pattern during radiation treatment delivery, and regulating a speed of delivery of said radiation treatment based on said determined difference.

A method for delivering therapeutic radiation to a tumor within a patient including: monitoring tumor motion in a preliminary procedure to generate and record a surrogate signal representing the tumor motion; determining a radiation therapy plan for the patient including a planned sequence of varying parameters of a radiation beam to track the tumor motion and a planned rate of execution of the planned sequence; configuring a radiation therapy device to deliver radiation in accordance with the radiation therapy plan, positioning the patient within the device, and activating the device to perform the planned sequence; monitoring tumor motion during the procedure to provide a treatment surrogate signal; determining the difference between the estimated and treatment surrogate signals; and regulating the speed of the radiation treatment procedure by varying the rate of execution of the sequence of beam parameters in accordance with the difference between the estimated and treatment surrogate signals.

A new optimization method for generating treatment plans for radiation oncology is described and claimed. This new method works for intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), intensity modulated arc therapy (IMAT), and hybrid IMRT.
