In some embodiments, an apparatus and a system, as well as a method and article of manufacture, may operate to determine a value of strain, such as an equivalent plastic strain, in a perforated portion of a well by applying a set of draw-down pressures to the surface of at least one perforation tunnel in the perforated portion. The perforated portion, in turn, is modeled using stress components provided by a global field model that includes the location of the well, to set boundary conditions at the surface of the well. A well drilling process and a tunnel perforating process are modeled with element removal and pressure addition for the perforated portion. Additional activity may include operating a controlled device based on the value of strain that is determined. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

Draw-down pressure apparatus, systems, and methods

System and method for predicting the mud weight window in formations, particularly those formations having geologic structures such as salt domes. One embodiment is a computer-implemented method of modeling a formation in 3-D and determining a plurality of effective stress ratios for the modeled 3-D formation using finite element analysis. Thereafter, the trajectory of a proposed wellbore through the 3-D modeled formation is plotted and the specific effective stress ratios along the wellbore are selected to form a data set. The 3-D data set of effective stress ratios is then imported into 1-D modeling software and combined with 1-D data. The combined data is thereafter utilized to estimate the mud weight window for the formation around the wellbore.

System and methods for optimizing multistage hydraulic fracturing design based on three-dimensional (3D) continuum damage mechanics are provided. A 3D global model of a field of hydrocarbon reservoirs is generated. A finite element analysis of the 3D global model is performed to calculate values of one or more mechanical variables for the field. A smaller-scale 3D sub-model of a selected portion of the field is generated from the 3D global model based on the calculated values of the mechanical variables. The hydraulic fracturing effects of fluid injection stimulation within the targeted reservoir formation are simulated by applying one or more numerical damage models to the sub-model. Optimal design parameters for multistage hydraulic fracturing of the targeted formation with a plurality of horizontal wells are determined based on numerical results of the simulation.
