An improved color-converting photoluminescent film that provides visible light emission in the red to green portion of the visible spectrum when excited by blue light. The color-converted photoluminescent film of the invention is patternable and has improved luminous efficiency and stability and is suitable for use in electroluminescent displays. The film comprises a mixture of a clear UV curable resin and photo-initiator which does not absorb blue light; and fluorescent pigment particles, wherein a molecular additive is optionally provided in to either or both of the pigment particles and curable resin. The mixture is screen printed onto a substrate to form a film and UV cured.

A physical vapor deposition method for the deposition of thioaluminate phosphor compositions includes providing one or more source materials including an intermetallic barium aluminum compound, a barium aluminum alloy or a protected barium metal, providing an activator species and effecting deposition of the one or more source materials and activator species as a phosphor composition on a selected substrate. The present invention is directed to color electroluminescent displays comprising a novel sub-pixel structure and method for making the same. The sub-pixel structure has an electroluminescent phosphor, which emits blue light, and a photoluminescent phosphor, which emits at least one other color as a result of absorption of the blue light. The invention is also directed to novel photoluminescent phosphor materials.

The invention provides a method of forming a thick film dielectric layer in an EL laminate of the type including one or more phosphor layers sandwiched between a front and a rear electrode with the phosphor layer being separated from the rear electrode by a thick film dielectric layer. The method includes depositing a ceramic material in one or more layers by a thick film technique to form a dielectric layer having a thickness of 10 to 300 &#x3bc;m; pressing the dielectric layer to form a densified layer with reduced porosity and surface roughness; and sintering the dielectric layer to form a pressed, sintered dielectric layer which, in an EL laminate, has an improved uniform luminosity over an unpressed, sintered dielectric layer of the same composition.

An electroluminescent display and driving method is provided wherein the rows of pixels are divided into sub-pixel sets and several different sets of sub-pixels are then addressed from within a larger superset of adjacent sub-pixels. The image data for the addressed sub-pixels is averaged with that for adjacent sub-pixels and is applied to the reduced number of larger sub-pixels in sequence. Consequently, for a given sequence of input frame data sets the time average over one frame for a portion of the sub-pixels at any location of the panel is substantially the same as that for a conventionally addressed sub-pixel in a prior art panel.

The invention provides a method of forming a patterned phosphor structure having red, green and blue sub-pixel elements for an AC electroluminescent display. Method of forming a patterned phosphor structure for an electroluminescent laminate

A phosphor and a method of deposition. The phosphor comprises a composition of the formula M'BaM&#x2033;M&#x2032;&#x2033;; RE, where M&#x2032; is at least one element selected from magnesium and calcium, M&#x2033; is at least one element selected from aluminum, gallium and indium, M&#x2032;&#x2033; is at least one element selected from sulphur, selenium and tellurium, RE is at least one rare earth element, especially europium or cerium, and 0&#x3c;a&#x3c;1. Deposition is preferably by dual source electron beam deposition. The phosphor may be annealed. The phosphor provides a high luminosity blue emission that does not require an optical filter to achieve acceptable color coordinates for the blue sub-pixel element for a full color thin film or thick film electroluminescent display. The blue sub-pixel pixel performance meets the luminosity and color temperature specifications for current generation cathode ray tube displays.

Electroluminescent laminate with patterned phosphor structure and thick film dielectric with improved dielectric properties

A thin film phosphor for an electroluminescent device, the phosphor being a compound of the formula Mg Ca Al S :M, where the value of x is in the range <x< and M is a rare earth activator. A method for the preparation of the phosphor on a substrate is also disclosed.
