Systems and methods for using a physical layer transceiver (PHY) of an automobile to avoid data signal collision on a high noise or interference automotive multi-drop communication link are provided. A signal is received at a first PHY via a multi-drop communication link in a high noise or interference automotive environment. The received signal is separated into a first spectral component corresponding to a first logic level and into a second spectral component corresponding to a second logic level. Based on analysis of the first and second spectral components, respectively, a determination is made as to whether a second PHY device is concurrently transmitting data on the link, by determining whether both the first and second logic levels are detected in the first and second spectral components within a threshold period of time of one another. The first PHY device is permitted to transmit, or prevented from transmitting, data via the link based on whether the second PHY device is transmitting data on the link.

Physical layer transceiver with collision avoidance in high noise and interference environment

A method for communication includes receiving first data timed by a first clock and receiving a signal including second data timed by a second clock, which is independent of the first clock, and generating a stream of data samples corresponding to the second signal. The received first data are resampled responsively to a time-varying phase shift between the first and second clocks to generate resampled data timed by the second clock. The resampled data are applied in estimating and subtracting an alien crosstalk component from the stream of data samples.

Adaptive cancellation of asynchronous near-end crosstalk

A network interface device operates in a normal transmit operating mode in which the network interface device continually receives transmission symbols from a link partner via the communication link. The network interface device determines that receive circuitry of the network interface device is to transition to a low power mode in response to receiving a sleep signal from the link partner. The network interface device then operates according to a quiet/refresh cycle of the low power mode to conserve power. The quiet/refresh cycle corresponds to a time schedule that includes a refresh time window in which receive circuitry of the network interface device is to be powered to receive a refresh signal from the link partner Immediately after transmission of the sleep signal, the network interface device transitions to a quiet time window of the time schedule in which the network interface device ignores transmissions from the link partner.

Energy efficient ethernet (EEE) operation

An Ethernet Physical Layer (PHY) device includes a link interface and a transceiver. The link interface is configured to connect to a full-duplex wired Ethernet link. The transceiver is configured to receive first Ethernet signals carrying first data at a first data rate over the Ethernet link in a first direction, the first Ethernet signals occupying a first frequency band, and to transmit second Ethernet signals carrying second data at a second data rate different from the first data rate, over the Ethernet link in a second direction that is opposite the first direction, the second Ethernet signals occupying a second frequency band that is different from the first frequency band.

Self-diagnosis for in-vehicle networks

Methods, PHYs, and computer-readable media are provided for reliably receiving data at a physical layer transceiver of an automobile in the presence of noise or interference. A non-equalized signal is received at a physical layer transceiver via a communication channel in a high noise or interference automotive environment. The non-equalized signal is prepared for extraction of data by performing one or more of the following: improving a signal-to-noise ratio of the non-equalized signal by using two or more parallel matching filters to correlate the non-equalized signal with two or more signal templates to detect the presence of logic low signal patterns and logic high signal patterns in the non-equalized signal; reducing jitter in the non-equalized signal by tracking a phase of the non-equalized signal using a digital timing loop; compensating for noise or interference distortion in the non-equalized signal by selecting a decision sample defined by a plurality of peaks, the selecting performed based on tracking peaks in the non-equalized signal; searching the non-equalized signal for a preamble before initiating a process of receiving payload data, to reduce false data reception caused by noise or interference; and extracting data from the prepared non-equalized signal.

Physical layer transceiver with increased noise and interference tolerance and reduced loss

A receiver includes an interface and a processor. The interface is configured to receive a signal including symbols carrying bit values in respective symbol intervals, and to convert the received signal into a serial sequence of digital samples, the received signal being modulated using a Differential Manchester Encoding (DME) scheme that (i) represents a first bit value by a first symbol type having a level transition in the corresponding symbol interval and (ii) represents a second bit value by a second symbol type having a constant level in the corresponding symbol interval. The processor is configured to derive an error signal from the digital samples, and to produce a quality measure of the received signal based on the derived error signal.

An Ethernet Physical Layer (PHY) device includes a link interface and a transceiver. The link interface connects to a full-duplex wired Ethernet link. The transceiver receives first Ethernet signals carrying first data at a first data rate over toe Ethernet link at a first baud rate, transmits second Ethernet signals carrying second data at a second data rate higher than the first data rate, over the Ethernet link, at a second baud rate that is higher than the first baud rate, resamples a reference signal related to the second Ethernet signals to match the first baud rate, generates from the resampled reference signal, at the first baud rate, an echo cancelation signal indicative of an echo signal originating from the second Ethernet signals and interfering with reception of the first Ethernet signals, and suppresses the echo signal from the first Ethernet signals using the echo cancelation signal.

A second device receives a first synchronization signal transmitted by a first device for training synchronization between the second device and the first device. The second device then transmits one or more initial synchronization response signals to the first device. The one or more initial synchronization response signals are from among a fixed number of synchronization response signals that the second device is configured to transmit to the first device. After transmission of the one or more initial synchronization response signals, the second device receives a second synchronization signal from the first device. After receiving the second synchronization signal, the second device continues transmission of synchronization response signals to the first device until the fixed number of synchronization response signals are transmitted from the second device to the first device.

Robust link synchronization in ethernet networks

An Ethernet physical layer (PHY) transceiver includes a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter is configured to precode a first data stream by summing two or more mutually-delayed replicas of the first data stream, and to transmit the precoded first data stream over a full-duplex wired channel to a peer Ethernet PHY transceiver. The receiver is configured to receive a second data stream from the peer Ethernet PHY transceiver over the full-duplex wired channel, and to decode the received second data stream while the transmitter concurrently is transmitting the precoded first data stream.

Data symbols in an input signal are detected with a slicer of a DFE of a transceiver device. An output of a feedback filter of the DFE is generated, during a particular clock cycle, based on a first set of one or more data symbols detected during first one or more previous clock cycles and a second set of one or more data symbols detected during second one or more previous clock cycles. The second set is separated from the first set by a third set of one or more data symbols detected during third one or more clock cycles that occur after the first one or more clock cycles and before the second one or more clock cycles, where the output is generated without use of the third set of symbols. The output is subtracted from the input signal to generate an equalized input to the slicer.

Interference mitigation in high speed ethernet communication networks

An Ethernet transceiver includes physical-layer (PHY) circuitry and a signal-loss detector. The PHY circuitry is configured to receive a signal from a peer transceiver, to process the received signal in a series of digital PHY-level processing operations, and to output the processed signal for Medium Access Control (MAC) processing. The signal-loss detector is configured to receive, from the PHY circuitry, a digital version of the received signal, and to detect a signal-loss event based on an amplitude of the digital version of the received signal.

Embodiments described herein provide a method for waking a first node in a low power mode. A network comprises at least the first node and a second node in an awake mode where the first and second nodes have respective transceivers coupled via substantially fixed communication pathways. The transceiver of the second node obtains a training signal designed to be transmitted at a pre-defined symbol rate and transmits the training signal at a symbol rate lower than the pre-defined symbol rate to the physical layer of the first node for a predetermined duration of time. The second node, in response to receiving the training signal transitions from the low power mode to an awake state.

A method of synchronizing master and slave nodes on a high-speed Ethernet connection includes sending a first plurality of synchronization pulse units from the master, receiving at the master a second plurality of synchronization pulse units sent by the slave in response to receipt of the first plurality of synchronization pulse units, monitoring at the master for receipt of a first synchronization pulse unit from the second plurality, having a predetermined characteristic, monitoring at the master for receipt of at least one further synchronization pulse unit, from the second plurality, having the predetermined characteristic, and recognizing receipt of the second plurality upon receipt of the first and at least one further synchronization pulse unit having the predetermined characteristic, where the first synchronization pulse unit and the at least one further synchronization pulse unit meet either a first temporal spacing condition or an integer multiple of the first temporal spacing condition.
