A method of determining at least one selection parameter for selecting an intraocular lens to be inserted into an eye; the method comprises reading, by a data processing system, data indicative of an axial position of at least a portion of an anterior surface of an at least partially empty capsular bag of the eye, relative to an optical axis of the eye. The method further comprises determining an axial position parameter, which is representative of the axial position of the portion of the anterior surface, depending on the data. The method further comprises determining the at least one selection parameter for selecting the intraocular lens depending on the determined position parameter.

Systems and methods are presented for acquisition and processing of spectrally dispersed illumination optical coherence tomographic data. Light from a source is distributed spectrally on the sample, and each acquisition simultaneously provides partial spectral interference information from multiple locations in the sample. Thus for a given spatial point, a single observation will be of a partial spectrum A-scan. When multiple partial spectrum A-scan observations are made at the same point by shifting the spectrum of light on to the tissue, the point can be observed by the entire broadband spectrum of the light source, thereby making it possible to create a full axial resolution A-scan.

Systems and methods for spectrally dispersed illumination optical coherence tomography

A digital version of both amplitude and phase of a received optical is developed by employing direct differential detection in conjunction with digital signal processing. The signal is split into three copies. An intensity profile is conventionally obtained using one of the copies. Phase information is obtained by supplying each remaining copy to a respective one of a pair of optical delay interferometers that have orthogonal phase offsets, followed by respective balanced intensity detectors. The output of each of the balanced intensity detectors, and the intensity profile, are each converted to respective digital representations. Signal processing is used to develop the phase information from the digital representations of the output of the balanced intensity detector outputs.

Split Integration Mode (SIM) acquisition schemes are presented that enable optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging at multiple rates. SIM enables a system and method of operation having a first mode and a second mode, wherein the fundamental acquisition rate of the detector is the same in the two modes, but wherein the generated signals in the second mode are digitally combined prior to signal processing to create a data set with an effective acquisition rate less than the fundamental acquisition rate.

The present invention provides for the detection and display of polarization scrambling tissue without resolving the polarization state of the backscattered imaging beam. In one embodiment, we illuminate the tissue using two different polarizations. A first polarization determines a first image of high intensity while the second polarization determines a second image of low intensity. Comparison and combination of the first and second images determines tissue which scrambles the polarization in neighboring detection cells.

An optical receiver adapted to process an optical duobinary signal received over a transmission link in an optical communication system. In one embodiment, the receiver has an optical-to-electrical signal converter coupled to a decoder. The decoder processes an electrical signal generated by the converter to generate a bit sequence corresponding to the optical signal. To generate a bit value, the decoder integrates the electrical signal using a sampling window and compares the integration result with a decision threshold value. In one configuration, the width of the sampling window and the decision threshold value are selected based on the eye diagram and noise distribution function, respectively, corresponding to the optical signal. Advantageously, embodiments of the present invention improve overall back-to-back (i.e., source-to-destination) system performance, e.g., by improving dispersion tolerance and/or reducing optical power corresponding to a selected bit error rate value.

In one embodiment of the invention a dispersion compensator is provided for use in a dense wavelength division multiplexed optical communication system. The dispersion compensator comprises a periodic-group-delay dispersion compensation module which provides a portion of the dispersion compensation for a dispersion managed span of the optical communication system.
