The enclosed disclosure relates to vehicle systems in which an engine, a particulate filter fluidly coupled with the engine, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system fluidly coupled with the engine downstream of the particulate filter, an electrical heating device implemented with the particulate filter, and a controller operatively coupled with the engine and the electrical heating device, are implemented. The controller can detect, when the engine is turned off, a condition for turning on the engine, detect a temperature of the particulate filter of the SCR system, activate the electrical heating device in response to the detected temperature being below a lower temperature threshold, and turn on the engine in response to the detected temperature being at or above the lower temperature threshold.

Apparatus, methods and systems for electrically heated particulate filter and SCR catalyst in vehicles

A system and method used to predict the state of health of a battery in a powertrain of a vehicle including a vehicle route profile generator arranged to generate a vehicle specific rout profile based on historical vehicle driving information, are disclosed. In one example, the system and method also include a powertrain model to convert the vehicle specific route profile to a predicted battery demand profile, and a state of health profile generator to generate a predicted state of health profile of the battery based on the predicted battery demand. The system includes an aftertreatment system comprising an exhaust conduit that directs exhaust gas from an engine system; a heater coupled to the aftertreatment system and configured to provide heat; and a controller coupled to the heater. The controller is configured to: determine whether the engine system is idling; in response to determining that the engine system is idling, determine whether a conversion efficiency of the engine system is greater than a threshold value; in response to determining that the conversion efficiency is greater than the threshold value, determine whether a temperature regarding the aftertreatment system is greater than a threshold temperature; and in response to determining that the temperature of the aftertreatment system is greater than the threshold temperature, at least one of disable or partially disable the heater.

A system includes a first heater positioned in or proximate to an exhaust aftertreatment system in exhaust gas-receiving communication with an engine, a second heater positioned downstream of the first heater, and a controller coupled to the first and second heaters. The controller is structured to: determine, based on information indicative of a temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system, that the temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system is below a predefined temperature threshold; determine that the second heater is in or likely in an error state; and control a temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system using the first heater in response to determining that the second heater is in or likely in the error state, wherein the first heater controls the temperature regarding the exhaust aftertreatment system after a temperature regarding an engine intake air is at or above a predefined air intake temperature threshold.

The method includes: receiving, by a controller, information indicative of a temperature of an aftertreatment system of the vehicle and a power output of an engine of the vehicle; comparing, by the controller, the temperature of the aftertreatment system to a temperature threshold; comparing, by the controller, the power output to a power output threshold; and responsive to the comparisons, commanding, by the controller, an aftertreatment system heater to selectively engage and disengage to warm the aftertreatment system of the vehicle.

The controller is configured to, determine that the catalyst is operating under cold start conditions, control the bypass valve to direct exhaust gas to the PNA, determine that the catalyst is no longer operating under cold start conditions and continue to control the bypass valve to direct exhaust gas to the PNA for a predetermined duration, and after the elapse of the predetermined duration, control the bypass valve to direct exhaust gas to the catalyst bypassing the PNA. The controller is also configured to detect a high transient torque demand while the exhaust gas is provided to the PNA, and split the torque demand between the engine and an electric motor.

For example, a computer-implemented method for conditioning an aftertreatment system of a hybrid system including an electric motor and a combustion engine includes: determining whether the aftertreatment system is in a first temperature zone below a first temperature threshold; determining whether a power demand corresponding to the operation of the hybrid system is in a first power demand zone below a power threshold; and if the aftertreatment system is determined to be in the first temperature zone and the power demand of the hybrid system is determined to be in the first power demand zone, setting the hybrid system to compressor mode to heat the aftertreatment system.

A method for operating the engine includes preheating at least one aftertreatment component of an exhaust gas aftertreatment system of the engine by exposing the component to heated gas circulating in a closed gas recycling loop.
