Integration of self-biased magnetic circulators with microwave devices is disclosed herein. In microwave and other high-frequency radio frequency (RF) applications, a magnetic circulator can be implemented with a smaller permanent magnet. Aspects disclosed herein include a process flow for producing a self-biased circulator in an integrated circuit chip. In this regard, a magnetic circulator junction can be fabricated on an active layer of a semiconductor wafer. A deep pocket or cavity is formed in an insulating substrate under the active layer. This cavity is then filled with a ferromagnetic material such that the circulator junction is self-biased within the integrated circuit chip, eliminating the need for an external magnet. The self-biased circulator provides high isolation between ports in a smaller integrated circuit.

Integration of self-biased magnetic circulators with microwave devices

A passive magnetic device (PMD) has a base electrode, a multi-port signal structure (MPSS), and a substrate therebetween. The MPSS has a central plate residing in a second plane and at least two port tabs spaced apart from one another and extending from the central plate. The substrate has a central portion that defines a mesh structure between the base electrode and the central plate of the multi-port signal structure. A plurality of magnetic pillars are provided within the mesh structure, wherein each of the plurality of the magnetic pillars are spaced apart from one another and surrounded by a corresponding portion of the mesh structure. The PMD may provide a magnetically self-biased device that may be used as a radio frequency (RF) circulator, an RF isolator, and the like.

Passive magnetic devices

The invention provides a method for producing fibers, the method having the steps of producing electrospun fiber; and directing the fiber to a plurality of targets, whereby only one of the targets is grounded at any one time. Also provided is a system for producing anisotropic fibers having a reservoir of electrospun fiber constituent' wherein an egress point of the reservoir is electrically charged; a plurality of electrodes opposed to the egress point, wherein only one of the electrodes is grounded at any one time while the remaining electrodes are at an initial floating voltage state; and a target substrate disposed between the egress point and the plurality of electrodes.

Field controlled direct-write electrospinning

A system for incorporating ferromagnetic materials into several microwave application is described. The system employs a multi-layer substrate. A substrate for receiving microwave signals uses a base layer which has tunable elements and a nanofiber layer which uses magnetic nanotubes. The nanofibers have a high aspect ratio and the nanofiber layer is embedded in the base layer.

Magneto dielectric composite materials and microwave applications thereof

The invention provides a system for producing nanotubes, nanofibers and nanorods, the system comprising a wire array shaped as a cylinder such that the cylinder defines a void; a first furnace positioned within the void; a second furnace positioned opposite the first furnace to define a channel adapted to receive a portion of the cylinder as the cylinder rotates about its axis; a device for depositing spun fiber onto the wire array as the cylinder rotates; and a device for removing the deposited fiber from the array after the deposited fiber is heated within the channel. The invention also provides a method for producing nanotubes, the method comprising: supplying a cylindrical wire array, wherein the array defines an internal void; positioning a first furnace within the void; positioning a second furnace opposite the first furnace so as to define a channel between the first furnace and second furnace, the channel adapted to receive a portion of the cylindrical array as the array rotates about its axis; depositing spun fiber onto the array as the array rotates; heating the deposited fiber as it enters the channel; and removing the deposited fiber as it exits the channel.

Integrated system for nanofiber production

The invention provides a membrane comprising tubes extending through a polymer, wherein substantially all of the tubes are parallel with each other. Also provided is a method for producing a membrane, the method comprising: placing tubes on a substrate, subjecting the tubes to a magnetic field for a time and at a magnetic field strength to cause the tubes to align parallel with each other while simultaneously causing depending ends of the tubes to embed within the substrate; applying polymer to the tubes and substrate in an amount to affix the tubes relative to each other and relative to the substrate, and applying an etchant that cleaves a specific type of the bonds within the polymer to unblock the upstream ends of the nanotubes.

Magnetic nanotube composite membranes

A system for defining structures within an image is described. The system includes reading of an input file, preprocessing the input file while preserving metadata such as scale information and then detecting features of the input file. In one version the detection first uses an edge detector followed by identification of features using a Hough transform. The output of the process is identified elements within the image.

Image processing tool for automatic feature recognition and quantification

A nonreciprocal device is described. It includes a housing, a waveguide layer and at least one layer of magnetic nanofiber composite. The magnetic nanofiber composite layer is made up of a polymer base layer, a dielectric matrix comprising magnetic nanofibers. The nanofibers have a high aspect ratio and wherein said dielectric matrix is embedded in the polymer base layer.
