An engine includes a first crankshaft and a second crankshaft, pistons, piston rods, cylinders, combustion chambers, and fuel injectors. The crankshafts each extend in a horizontal plane and form a first and second rotating power output shaft of the engine. The combustion chambers form containment boundaries for combustion reactions of an air-fuel mixture formed in the cylinders with fuel provided by the fuel injectors. The piston rods connect the pistons to the first or the second crankshaft. The pistons are disposed in the cylinders, and the planar surface of the piston head of each piston distributes forces from an associated combustion reaction to a corresponding piston rod. The piston heads are disposed at an angle between 7 and 15 degrees in the first bank of cylinders and −7 and −15 degrees in the second bank of cylinders relative to a vertical plane.

High-speed long-stroke reciprocating engine

An exhaust system includes a plurality of cylinders, and each cylinder includes a scavenge exhaust valve and a blowdown exhaust valve. A scavenge path leads from the scavenge exhaust valves and a blowdown path leads from the blowdown exhaust valves. An arrangement activates and deactivates the scavenge exhaust valves and the blowdown exhaust valves. Further included is a cam shaft including a plurality of scavenge cams and a plurality of blowdown cams. During rotation of the cam shaft, the scavenge cams interact with the scavenge exhaust valves to open and close the scavenge exhaust valves when the scavenge exhaust valves are activated. Additionally, during rotation of the cam shaft, the blowdown cams interact with the blowdown exhaust valves to open and close the blowdown exhaust valves when the blowdown exhaust valves are activated, and at different times with respect to the opening and closing of the scavenge exhaust valves.

An engine system including an engine is disclosed. The engine includes a combustion chamber having an intake port and an exhaust port, a piston movably disposed in the combustion chamber, and a prechamber adjacent to and in fluid communication with the combustion chamber. The engine system further includes an exhaust line fluidly connected to the exhaust port, a storage tank fluidly connected to the prechamber via a purge line, and a prechamber valve provided along the purge line.

Air pressure energy recovery and air/fuel/reformate storage during vehicle deceleration for active prechamber operation

An engine includes a combustion chamber, a fuel injector, a spark plug, and a piston. The combustion chamber receives air from an intake valve, which receives air from an external environment of the engine. The fuel injector includes a fuel channel, a fuel port, an air port, a needle valve, and a premixing tube. The fuel channel receives fuel from a fuel supply. The needle valve initially covers the fuel port, and actuates to fluidly connect the fuel port to the fuel channel such that the fuel port receives the fuel. The air port draws air into the fuel injector, and the premixing tube mixes the air and fuel to create a mixture. The mixture is fed into the combustion chamber along a central axis of the premixing tube such that the mixture intersects the electrode of the spark plug, which ignites the mixture to actuate the piston.

Hydrogen or hydrogen rich gas mixture fueled internal combustion engine using premixed direct gas injection

A method of operating an engine includes operating the engine in first and second engine operating map regions by performing passive jet ignition combustion with a first stoichiometric fuel mixture and a first volume of residual gas. The engine is operated in a third engine operating map region by performing turbulent jet controlled compression ignition (TJCCI) with an ultra lean fuel mixture and a first volume of cooled exhaust gas recirculation, a fourth engine operating map region by performing passive jet ignition combustion with a third stoichiometric fuel mixture and a second volume of cooled exhaust gas recirculation, and a fifth engine operating map region, characterized by shutting off the engine. The engine is operated in a mode transition region between the second, third, and fourth engine operating map regions by performing passive jet ignition combustion with a second stoichiometric fuel mixture and a second volume of residual gas.

Turbulent jet controlled compression ignition (TJCCI) engine

A motor system includes an engine having one or more cylinders, an electronic control unit, an exhaust treatment system in fluid connection with and downstream of the one or more cylinders. The exhaust treatment system includes an exhaust line, a combustion zone downstream, a combustion ignition source in the combustion zone, a catalyst downstream of an in thermal communication with the combustion zone. A method of heating a catalyst during an engine cold start and a method of initiating regular operating conditions of an engine having one or more cylinders are also described.

Exhaust system combustion for rapid catalyst heating

A fuel injector includes an injector body with a fuel chamber configured to receive fuel from a fuel line, an injector tip provided at an end of the injector body, and one or more nozzle assemblies provided in the injector tip. The one or more nozzle assemblies have a fuel channel in fluid communication with the fuel chamber, a premixing tube fluidly connected to the fuel channel, and a port fluidly connected to the premixing tube. The premixing tube has an orifice providing an outlet for the injector tip.

Method and systems for a direct fuel injection injector

A method of operating an engine includes igniting a combustible mixture in a combustion chamber of the engine, which produces exhaust gases. The exhaust gases are ejected into an exhaust manifold of the engine to create a primary exhaust stream. A portion of the exhaust gases is separated from the primary exhaust stream to create a secondary exhaust stream. Air and fuel are then mixed with the secondary exhaust stream to form a reformer feed mixture. The reformer feed mixture is reacted in a catalytic reformer to create a reformate exhaust stream, which is then mixed with an intake air stream to create a mixed air stream. The mixed air stream is the fed to the combustion chamber of the engine as the combustible mixture.

Process for improving engine efficiency using a fuel reforming system

A residual gas ignitor for use in igniting a fuel-air mixture within a main combustion chamber of an engine. The residual gas ignitor includes at least one inlet/outlet port, a residual gas ignitor chamber for receiving a combustion gas from the main combustion chamber, an ignitor valve for opening and closing the at least one inlet/outlet port, an actuator for actuating the ignitor valve to open and close the at least one inlet/outlet port, a valve guide for keeping the ignitor valve in a correct orientation within the residual gas ignitor, a preload spring for being in compression when the actuator disposes the ignitor valve into the closed position, and a heating element for maintaining or increasing a temperature of the combustion gas while the combustion gas is in the residual gas ignitor chamber. The residual gas ignitor may be used in engines for initiating combustion of fuel-air mixtures.

Reheated residual gas ignitor

A method includes providing an internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber, a piston movably disposed in the combustion chamber, and a prechamber connected to the combustion chamber via a flow port. The method further includes forcing a gas mixture from the combustion chamber through a zeolite material to the prechamber using a compression stroke of the piston, where the zeolite material filters the gas mixture to provide an oxygen rich gas into the prechamber.

Scavenged pre-chamber using oxygen generated by a molecular sieve process

A system includes an engine having a main combustion chamber and a prechamber containing a spark plug. The prechamber is in fluid communication with the main combustion chamber through at least one orifice. An engine intake line provides intake air to the engine. An engine exhaust line receives exhaust gases from the engine. An exhaust gas recirculation line transports a portion of the exhaust gases from the engine exhaust line to the engine intake line, forming an exhaust gas recirculation loop through the engine. The system includes a reformer having a reactor containing a catalyst-coated substrate. The reformer generates a gaseous reformate from a fuel. The system includes a prechamber feed line to transport a stream of the gaseous reformate from the reformer to the prechamber.

Method and system for extending dilution limit of a prechamber spark ignition engine

A prechamber device includes an enclosure body and a cap forming an enclosed volume. The enclosure body has an orifice at one end. A precombustion chamber is defined within the enclosed volume and is in fluid communication with the orifice. A valve plug is movable along an axial axis of the enclosure body to adjust a valve opening at the orifice to a range of positions from a fully open position to a closed position. An actuator is coupled to the cap and the valve plug and is controllable to displace the valve plug along the axial axis of the enclosure body. The prechamber device is operable to generate turbulent jets that are directed into a main combustion chamber of an engine cylinder through the valve opening. During an engine cycle, the valve opening is controlled between the range of positions based on detected engine speed and engine load.

Prechamber device for internal combustion engine

A technique facilitates enhanced microseismic monitoring. The technique may be applied to source mechanism identification under, for example, ill-conditioned receiver coverage to enhance the resolvability for microseismic monitoring. The microseismic monitoring may be used in hydraulic fracturing monitoring, induced seismicity monitoring, CO2 injection monitoring, other injection monitoring, mining, and/or other techniques which cause microseismic events.

Interactive event grouping method

A technique facilitates enhanced microseismic monitoring. In a variety of applications, the technique may be used to enhance the resolvability of moment tensor inversion for ill-conditioned seismic receiver coverage. As a result, microseismic monitoring technique enhances the capability for monitoring many types of naturally occurring and created seismic events. For example, the technique may be employed to enhance hydraulic fracturing monitoring, induced seismicity monitoring, CO2 injection monitoring, other injection monitoring, mining, and/or other techniques which cause microseismic events.
