The invention relates to an electrochemically active powder comprising particles containing a compound represented by formula AM(XO)wherein A comprises an alkaline metal; M comprises at least one transition metal and optionally at least one non-transition metal; and X is chosen among S, P and Si; wherein 0<a≤3.2; 1≤m≤2; and 1≤n≤3; wherein said particles are at least partially coated with a layer comprising a carbonaceous material, said carbonaceous material comprising a highly ordered graphite, wherein said highly ordered graphite has a ratio (I/I) of a peak intensity (I) at 1360 cmto a peak intensity (I) at 1580 cm, obtained by Raman spectrum analysis, of at most 3.05.

Carbon coated electrochemically active powder

A lithium metal oxide powder for a cathode material in a rechargeable battery comprises a core and a surface layer. The surface layer is delimited by an outer and an inner interface. The inner interface is in contact with the core. The cathode material has a layered crystal structure comprising the elements Li, M, and oxygen. M has the formula M=(Ni(NiMn)Co)A, with 0.15≤x≤0.30, 0.20≤z≤0.55, x+y+z=1 and 0<k≤0.1. The Li content is stoichiometrically controlled with a molar ratio 0.95≤Li:M≤1.10. A is at least one dopant and comprises Al. The core at the inner interface has an Al content of 0.3-3 mol %. The surface layer comprises an intimate mixture of Ni, Co, Mn, LiF and AlOdetermined by XPS. The surface layer has a Mn content that decreases from the Mn content at the inner interface to less than 50% of the Mn content at the outer interface.

Lithium nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide cathode powders for high voltage lithium-ion batteries

A lithium secondary cell having an operating voltage &#x2265;4.35V, comprising a cathode comprising a doped LiCoOactive material, an anode comprising graphite, and an electrolyte comprising a carbonate-based solvent, a lithium salt and both a succinonitrile (SN) and a lithium bis(oxalato)borate (LiBOB) additive wherein during the discharge at 45&#xb0; C. from a state of charge (SOC) of 100% at 4.5V to a SOC of 0 at 3V at a C/10 rate the difference of the SOC at 4.42V and 4.35V is at least 7% but less than 14%, and wherein the active material is doped by at least 0.5 mole % of either one or more of Mn, Mg and Ti.

A rechargeable lithium ion battery including: a positive electrode including coated particles, wherein each particle includes a core and a coating disposed thereon, wherein the core consists of Li, M, and O, and the coating includes Li, M, O, and AI2O3; wherein: M is (Ni(NiMn)Co)A; 0.15&#x2264;z&#x2264;0.50; 0.17&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.30; 0.35&#x2264;y&#x2264;0.75; 0&#x3c;k&#x3c;0.1; x+y+z=1; and A includes Al and optionally at least one additional metal dopant selected from Mg, Zr, W, Ti, Cr, V, Nb, B, and Ca, and combinations thereof; and wherein the Li and M are present in the core in a molar ratio of Li to M of at least 0.95 and no greater than 1.10; a negative electrode; and a nonaqueous liquid electrolyte including: a lithium salt; a nonaqueous solvent; and an additive mixture including: prop-1-ene-1,3-sultone; at least one compound selected from tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphite, tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphate, tri-allyl phosphate, and combinations thereof; and at least one compound selected from methylene methanedisulfonate, 1,3,2-dioxathiolane-2,2-dioxide, and combinations thereof.

Lithium ion batteries, electronic devices, and methods

A lithium metal oxide powder for a cathode material in a rechargeable battery, consisting of a core and a surface layer, the surface layer being delimited by an outer and an inner interface, the inner interface being in contact with the core, the core having a layered crystal structure comprising the elements Li, M and oxygen, wherein M has the formula M=(Ni(NiMn)Co)A, with 0.15&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.30, 0.20&#x2264;z&#x2264;0.55, x+y+z=1 and 0&#x3c;k&#x2264;0.1, wherein the Li content is stoichiometrically controlled with a molar ratio 0.95&#x2264;Li:M&#x2264;1.10; wherein A is at least one dopant and comprises Al; wherein the core has an Al content of 0.3-3 mol % and a F content of less than 0.05 mol %; and wherein the surface layer has an Al content that increases continuously from the Al content of the core at the inner interface to at least 10 mol % at the outer interface, and a F content that increases continuously from less than 0.05 mol % at the inner interface to at least 3 mol % at the outer interface, the Al and F contents in the surface layer being determined by XPS. The surface layer may also have a Mn content that decreases continuously from the Mn content of the core at the inner interface, to less than 50% of the Mn content of the core at the outer interface.

The surface layer may also comprise at least 3 mol % Al, the Al content in the surface layerbeing determined by XPS.
