Radar and LiDAR sensors play important roles in autonomous vehicles and ADAS (advanced driving assistance systems) in automobiles, however, they can only detect objects in view (line-of-sight). For example, when three vehicles are driving on road in a same lane, and if the first vehicle suddenly brakes, the third vehicle cannot detect it by regular radar and/or LiDAR because the second vehicle in front blocks the view. This invention discloses system and method to enable radar and/or LiDAR to detect vehicles on road that are blocked in view by another vehicle by specially configured active beacon transmitters, and reduce risks of rear-end collisions.

System and method of detecting vehicles beyond a view-blocking vehicle

Doppler LIDARs, such as those used in ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) and autonomous vehicles, may need to sense objects at many directions. Some of the Doppler LIDAR devices use mechanically moving parts to scan over a range of directions and the various directions are not sensed simultaneously but sensed in turns over time. Mechanical moving parts generally have higher costs, lower reliability and shorter Mean Time To Failure (MTTF). The LIDAR sensor on chip with Doppler-sensing pixels disclosed herein uses a Doppler sensing-chip that enables Doppler LIDAR devices to sense many directions simultaneously in parallel without having to use mechanical scan and mechanical moving parts, even without having to use electronic scan. Lower costs, higher reliability, and faster detection time as well as higher direction sensing accuracy are objectives of this invention.

In many applications such as automobiles on busy highways, if a lot of vehicles on road are equipped with Doppler radars to help improve driving safety, no matter human-driven or auto-driven, if the radars use same frequency band, avoiding interference between them is a hard task. Assigning distinct frequencies is one of the solutions, however not only it wastes expensive spectrum resource, but also the task itself to dynamically assign frequency to vehicles randomly come together becomes a hard one to do. The disclosed invention of Doppler group radar will allow radar devices to work together using shared frequency band without interfering one another, without sacrificing performance, and without much increase in costs.

For people with reduced physical ability such as elderly people, risks of bodily injuries are high. Once an injury occurs, a victim suffers, sometimes a victim even may not survive. To help such people, a device without adding much inconvenience in normal life is disclosed. The device is able to detect dangerous conditions and automatically deploy airbags when needed to prevent or mitigate potential bodily injuries.

The wireless communication device includes a wireless communication transceiver to generate an oscillator control signal and an activation signal, a positioning-system receiver (e.g. a GPS receiver) to process received positioning signals, and a shared oscillator (e.g. a temperature compensated and voltage controlled crystal oscillator TCVCXO) responsive to the oscillator control signal and to generate a reference frequency signal for the wireless communication transceiver and the positioning-system receiver. The positioning-system receiver may control processing of the received positioning signals based upon the activation signal to reduce a noise contribution (e.g. phase noise) due to frequency control of the shared oscillator based upon the oscillator control signal. The activation signal may indicate that the oscillator control signal is being varied to provide frequency control or adjustment of the shared oscillator.

In some implementations, a method in a user equipment (UE) for adaptively determining a wakeup period includes determining a power level of a Downlink (DL) transmission from a base station during a first wakeup period within a Discontinuous Reception (DRX) inactive time. The UE deactivates a RF receiver in response to the determination of the second wakeup period. The UE activates the RF receiver at a beginning of the second wakeup period prior to a DRX active time. The UE receives a DL paging channel transmission during the DRX active time.

Adaptively determining a wakeup period

A method of updating map data entails capturing an image using a camera, determining a location of an object in the image, creating new map data to represent the object in the image, and updating a map database to include the new map data for the object in the image. This method may be implemented on a GPS-enabled wireless communications device having an onboard camera which can transmit the new map data to a map server for updating its map database. Determining the position of the object in the image relative to the wireless device may be accomplished using a rangefinder and compass, triangulation of multiple images of the object, or a stereoscopic camera. The accuracy of the GPS position fix may be improved by capturing images of recognizable objects for which location coordinates are available.

Catastrophic earthquakes cause tremendous loss to people, especially when they occur unprepared. Imminent prediction of the earthquake with occurrence time, location and magnitude may give people time to prepare for it and minimize the loss. Unfortunately, imminent prediction of the earthquakes, especially those without foreshocks, is very difficult if not impossible. This invention discloses a method and system that work around the difficulty of the imminent prediction of the earthquake. Instead of trying to predict the occurrence, it triggers the earthquake artificially at a known time so that evacuation and other preparations can be accomplished prior to the triggering time of the earthquake to reduce the loss caused by the earthquake. The artificial triggering of the earthquakes may be implemented by at least one underground nuclear explosion.

Method and system for reducing the loss caused by an earthquake

Systems and methods can be implemented on a user device and eNBs to manage downlink interference at the user device. The user device in a cell associated with a corresponding serving base station may receive interference from one or more interfering base stations. The user device can identify a preferred radio resource set in response to the detected interference and transmit a preferred radio resource indication to at least the serving base station in response to the detected interference. The preferred radio resource indication can be used for identifying the preferred radio resource set associated with the serving base station.

Providing mobile-guided downlink interference management

A computer-readable medium having computer-readable instructions stored on the computer-readable medium for execution of the computer-readable instructions by a processor to use in a mobile device having a visual display is provided. The instructions comprise monitoring an operating temperature at the device and, when the monitored operating temperature is greater than a first threshold temperature, allowing only emergency communication and providing a visual indication indicating that only emergency communication is allowed.

Methods and apparatus for limiting communication capabilities in mobile communication devices

In one illustrative example, a technique in a mobile communication device which is operative in a wireless communication network for Push-To-Talk (PTT) communications involves receiving, at the mobile communication device, presence information associated with at least one other mobile communication device, the presence information including at least one of a current availability indication or capability indication; and buffering a PTT communication prior to its transmission from the mobile communication device based on the presence information. The current availability or capability indication may be an automatic answering indication or a media capability indication, as examples.

A method and apparatus for creating a communication group for a given type of communication using a mobile station for initiating communication sessions of the given type among mobile stations are disclosed. A group definition for determining members of the new communication group is composed from one or more contacts from the electronic address book such as by selecting from the address book using the mobile station. The group definition may include logical operators to define the combination of contacts. A name may be specified for the new group. The assembly of the list of members may be performed by the mobile station, a communication network server for maintaining groups (e.g. a Group and List Management Server (GLMS)) or an email server.

An apparatus and method for telephony tone signal and character code generation for QWERTY keyboards includes a QWERTY style keyboard, a processor and a keyboard mode control software module. The QWERTY style keyboard has a plurality of letter keys, wherein each letter key is configured to generate a unique input signal. The processor is coupled to the keyboard and is configured to convert each unique input signal generated by the letter keys into a character code and/or a telephony tone signal.
