Provided is a solid acid catalyst which enables the production of isomannide and/or 2,5-sorbitan from mannitol with high yield and high safety at low cost. The mannitol may be derived from a cellulose and/or a hemicellulose. The solid acid catalyst for dehydration contains an acid type &#x3b2;-zeolite and/or a Y type zeolite.

The present invention addresses the problem of providing a solid catalyst capable of achieving high selectivity and high yield for isosorbide, preferably at the same time, in a dehydration reaction by which dianhydrosugar alcohol is obtained from a sugar alcohol, particularly, in a dehydration reaction by which isosorbide is obtained from sorbitol. The above-mentioned problem is solved by a solid catalyst for a dehydration reaction for preparing dianhydrosugar alcohol from sugar alcohol, said catalyst including an H-type &#x3b2; zeolite having an atomic composition ratio of Si to Al (Si/Al) of more than 20.

A solid phosphoric acid catalyst which, when gas-phase synthesizing trioxane from formaldehyde, results in production of trioxane at a high yield and at a high selection rate by markedly suppressing side reactions, reduces the adhesion of organic matter to the catalyst surface, and achieves a stable and long-term catalyst reaction. An object of the invention is to provide a production method that can produce glycol from polyhydric alcohol with high selectivity and in a satisfactory yield. The object is achieved by using a silver catalyst in a reaction for synthesizing hydroxyketone from polyhydric alcohol having adjacent hydroxyl groups, and a hydrogenation catalyst in a reaction for synthesizing glycol from hydroxyketone.
