A method including transmitting an intensity-modulated light through a mode conditioner to generate a mode-conditioned intensity-modulated light in one or a plurality of launch conditions and transmitting the mode-conditioned intensity-modulated light through a multimode optical fiber under test (FUT) to excite a plurality of modes of the FUT. The method further includes converting the mode-conditioned intensity-modulated light transmitted through the FUT into an electrical signal, measuring, based on the electrical signal, a complex transfer function CTF(f) of the FUT, and obtaining an output pulse based on the measured complex transfer function CTF(f) from one or a plurality of launch conditions and an assumed input pulse using the equation: P(t)=(CTF(f)*(P(t))). Wherein, P(t) is the output pulse,(CTF(f)*(P(t))) is the inverse Fourier transform of the function CTF(f)*(P(t)), and(P(t)) is the Fourier transform of the assumed input pulse. Additionally, the method includes calculating modal bandwidth of the FUT based on P(t).

Frequency domain method and system for measuring modal bandwidth, chromatic dispersion, and skew of optical fibers

The optical fibers disclosed have single mode and few mode optical transmission for VCSEL-based optical fiber transmission systems. The optical fibers have a cable cutoff wavelength λof equal to or below 1260 nm thereby defining single mode operation at a wavelength in a first wavelength range greater than 1260 nm and few-mode operation at a wavelength in a second wavelength range from 970 nm and 1070 nm. The mode-field diameter is in the range from 9.3 microns to 10.9 microns at 1550 nm. The optical fibers have an overfilled bandwidth OFL BW of 1 GHz·km to 3 GHz·km at the at least one wavelength in the second wavelength range. VCSEL based optical transmission systems and methods are disclosed that utilize both single core and multicore versions of the optical fiber.

Optical fibers for single mode and few mode VCSEL-based optical fiber transmission systems

Methods of forming a bandwidth-tuned optical fiber for short-length data transmission systems include establishing a relationship between a change Δτ in a modal delay τ, a change ΔT in a draw tension T and a change Δλ in a BM wavelength λ of light in a BM wavelength range from 840 nm and 1100 nm for a test optical fiber drawn from a preform and that supports BM operation at the BM wavelength. The methods also include drawing from either the preform or a closely related preform the bandwidth-tuned optical fiber by setting the draw tension based on the established relationships of the aforementioned parameters so that the bandwidth-tuned optical fiber has a target bandwidth greater than 2 GHz·km at a target wavelength within the BM wavelength range.

Tension-based methods for forming bandwidth tuned optical fibers for bi-modal optical data transmission

Methods for modifying multi-mode optical fiber manufacturing processes are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method for modifying a process for manufacturing multi-mode optical fiber includes measuring at least one characteristic of a multi-mode optical fiber. The at least one characteristic is a modal bandwidth or a differential mode delay at one or more wavelengths. The method further includes determining a measured peak wavelength of the multi-mode optical fiber based on the measured characteristic, determining a difference between the target peak wavelength and the measured peak wavelength, and modifying the process for manufacturing multi-mode optical fiber based on the difference between the target peak wavelength and the measured peak wavelength.

Methods for modifying multi-mode optical fiber manufacturing processes

A method of manufacturing a multimode optical fiber includes specifying a peak wavelength &#x3bb;for the multimode optical fiber. The peak wavelength &#x3bb;corresponds to a wavelength at which the multimode optical fiber has a maximum bandwidth. The multimode optical fiber comprises a core and a cladding surrounding and directly adjacent to the core. The core has a radius rand a maximum relative refractive index &#x394;&#x3e;0. The cladding comprises a depressed-index region having a minimum relative refractive index &#x394;&#x3c;0 and a volume v. A draw tension T for the multimode optical fiber is selected based on a correlation relating peak wavelength &#x3bb;to draw tension T, the correlation comprising a correlation constant. The correlation constant K is a function of at least one of &#x394;, r, v, &#x394;, and &#x3bb;. The multimode optical fiber is drawn from a preform at the draw tension T.

Method for manufacturing multimode optical fibers

The optical fibers disclosed have single mode and few mode optical transmission for VCSEL-based optical fiber transmission systems. The optical fibers have a cable cutoff wavelength &#x3bb;of equal to or below 1260 nm thereby defining single mode operation at wavelengths greater than 1260 nm and few-mode operation at wavelengths in a wavelength range from 800 nm and 1100 nm. Optical fibers for single mode and few mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser-based optical fiber transmission systems

A multimode optical fiber having a core region. The core region includes silica, has an outer radius r, and has a maximum relative refractive index of about 1.5% or less. Additionally, the multimode optical fiber is configured to have an effective bandwidth of about 4.7 GHz-Km or greater for an excited portion of the core region that has a diameter greater than 50 microns, the effective bandwidth being at a wavelength that is within a range of between about 800 and about 1370 nm.

The present disclosure is directed to systems and methods for calculating a modal time delay and a modal bandwidth. For example, a method may include: transmitting an intensity-modulated light through a mode conditioner to generate a mode-conditioned intensity-modulated light; transmitting the mode-conditioned intensity-modulated light through an optical fiber under test (FUT) to excite a plurality of modes of the optical FUT; converting the mode-conditioned intensity-modulated light transmitted through the optical FUT into an electrical signal; measuring, based on the electrical signal, a transfer function or a complex transfer function of the optical FUT based on at least on one pair of the plurality of modes; calculating a modal delay time of the optical FUT based on the transfer function or the complex transfer function; and calculating a modal bandwidth of the optical FUT based on the modal delay time, the modal bandwidth being calculated for any given launch conditions of the plurality of modes.

Systems and methods for measuring a modal delay and a modal bandwidth

Some embodiments of the disclosure relate to an optical transmission system that operates at a wavelength in the range from 950 nm to 1600 nm and that employs a single-mode optical transmitter and an optical receiver optically coupled to respective ends of a multimode fiber designed for 850 nm multimode operation. The optical transmission system also employs at least one single mode fiber situated within the optical pathway between the optical transmitter and the receiver and coupled to the multimode fiber.

Disclosed is an optical fiber which includes a core including silica with a core diameter and having at least two dopants, a maximum relative refractive index delta of at least 0.7% and an alpha value in the range of 1.9-2.2. The core has a refractive index profile configured to transmit light in a multimode propagation at a first wavelength &#x3bb;in the range of 800-1100 nm and to propagate light in a LP01 mode at a second wavelength &#x3bb;. The second wavelength &#x3bb;is greater than 1200 nm. The optical fiber is structured to have a LP01 mode field diameter in the range of 8.5-12.5 &#x3bc;m at 1310 nm.

Optical fiber for both multimode and single-mode operation and transmission system therefor

A differential mode delay (DMD) measurement system for an optical fiber is provided. The system includes an optical test fiber with a plurality of modes; a single mode light source that provides a continuous light wave signal to a modulator; and a pulse generator that provides an electrical pulse train signal to the modulator and a triggering signal to a receiver. The modulator is configured to generate a modulated optical test signal through the optical fiber based at least in part on the received light wave and pulse train signals, and the receiver is configured to receive the test signal transmitted through the fiber and evaluate the test signal based at least in part on the triggering signal. The system can be employed to create DMD waveform and centroid charts to obtain minEMBc bandwidth information for a fiber within a wavelength range.
