A method for dynamically determining a mass of a vehicle including a propulsion system coupled to a drive wheel is described, and includes monitoring vehicle operating conditions, executing an event-based estimation method based upon the vehicle operating conditions to determine a first vehicle mass state, and executing a recursive estimation method based upon the vehicle operating conditions to determine a second vehicle mass state. A final vehicle mass is determined based upon the first and second vehicle mass states.

Method and apparatus for dynamically estimating vehicle mass

A method of identifying a fault in a friction brake actuated by hydraulic brake pressure and configured to decelerate a vehicle road wheel includes detecting, via a first sensor, a vibration at the road wheel and communicating data indicative of the detected vibration to a controller. The method additionally includes detecting, via a second sensor, upon application of the hydraulic brake pressure, a hydraulic brake pressure variation and communicating data indicative of the detected hydraulic brake pressure variation. The method additionally includes comparing, via the controller, the data indicative of the detected vibration with a threshold vibration value and the data indicative of the detected hydraulic brake pressure variation with a threshold hydraulic brake pressure value. Furthermore, the method includes generating a sensory signal indicative of the brake fault when magnitudes of the detected vibration and the detected hydraulic brake pressure variation are greater than their respective threshold values.

Detection of a friction brake fault

System and method for controlling operation of a vehicle in real-time with a supervisory control module. A fault detection module is configured to receive respective sensor data from one or more sensors in communication with the vehicle and generate fault data. The supervisory control module includes at least one fault-tolerant controller configured to respond to a plurality of faults. The supervisory control module is configured to receive the fault data. When at least one fault is detected from the plurality of faults, the supervisory control module is configured to employ the fault-tolerant controller to generate at least one selected command. The selected command is transmitted to one or more device controllers for delivery to at least one of the respective components of the vehicle. Operation of the vehicle is controlled based in part on the selected command.

Controlling operation of a vehicle with a supervisory control module having a fault-tolerant controller

A method for planning and adapting a recommended travel route to a route destination for a vehicle having various subsystems includes identifying the route destination and receiving vehicle health management (VHM)/state of health (SOH) information for each subsystem. The vehicle with a controller programmed to execute the method is also disclosed. The method includes calculating route characteristics of candidate travel routes to the destination using the VHM information and determining, from among the candidate travel routes, travel routes for which the characteristics meet a respective threshold requirement. Thereafter, the controller executes a control action by displaying a candidate route meeting the threshold requirements. An occupant is prompted to revise the mission requirements when no candidate route exists. A default route to a designated parking location or repair depot may be displayed when none of the candidate routes meet the threshold requirements.

Route planning and adaptation based on vehicle health management information

A method for estimating the mass of a vehicle system includes a number of steps including a first step of providing a vehicle system having at least a powertrain and a vehicle control module. Three different mass estimates are assigned with the last mass estimate being the most accurate. The mass estimates are used in the vehicle control module calculations for vehicle control parameters in the event that the weight of the vehicle changes.

Method for real-time mass estimation of a vehicle system

A method for use with a vehicle having one or more subsystems includes receiving vehicle health management (VHM) information via a controller indicative of a state of health of the subsystem. The VHM information is based on prior testing results of the subsystem. The method includes determining a required testing profile using the testing results, applying the testing profile to the subsystem to thereby control a state of the subsystem, and measuring a response of the subsystem to the applied testing profile. The method also includes recording additional testing results in memory of the controller that is indicative of a response of the subsystem to the applied testing profile. The vehicle includes a plurality of subsystems and a controller configured to execute the method.

Vehicle with health-based active self-testing method

According to aspects of the present disclosure, a vehicle includes a braking system, at least one controller, and at least one memory. The braking system includes a brake fluid therein and a brake pedal. The at least one memory stores instructions that, when executed by the at least one controller, are configured to: determine, via a boiling-point module, a boiling point of a brake fluid within a braking system of a vehicle; determine, via a fluidic-properties module, fluidic properties of the brake fluid; determine, via a corrosion-inhibitor module, an amount of corrosion inhibitors within the brake fluid; determine, via a reserve-alkalinity module, a reserve alkalinity of the brake fluid; estimate, a brake-fluid life module, a remaining effective life of the brake fluid using the boiling point, the fluidic properties, the amount of corrosion inhibitors, and the reserve alkalinity; and adjust a response curve of the braking system.

Brake fluid life monitoring

A braking system for a vehicle includes devices that are configured to apply braking force to a wheel in response to a braking command. A first sensor is disposed to monitor a parameter associated with the braking force, and a spatial sensor is disposed to determine a linear range between the vehicle and a predefined locus point. A controller is operatively connected to the braking system and in communication with the first sensor and the spatial sensor. The controller detects a braking event and determines a time to stop and an applied braking force during the braking event, which is integrated over the time to stop. The braking system is evaluated based upon the total stopping distance and the integrated applied braking force during the braking event. A fault associated with the braking system is determined based upon the evaluation of the braking system.

Method and apparatus for monitoring a vehicle brake

A method proactively transitions performance of a functional operation from a primary subsystem to a secondary subsystem within a vehicle or other system having an electronic control unit (ECU). The method includes receiving health management information via the ECU when the primary subsystem is actively performing the functional operation within the system and the secondary subsystem operates in a standby mode, wherein the health information is indicative of a numeric state of health (SOH) of the primary subsystem. The method also includes comparing the numeric SOH to a calibrated non-zero threshold SOH, and then commanding, via the ECU, a transition of the performance of the functional operation to the secondary subsystem and placing the primary subsystem in the standby mode when the numeric SOH is less than the calibrated non-zero threshold SOH. A vehicle executes the method via the ECU.

Proactive health-based transition to redundant subsystems

Systems and method are provided for collaboration between autonomous vehicles. In one embodiment, a processor-implemented method for coordinating travel between multiple autonomous vehicles is provided. The method includes sending a collaboration request to one or more vehicles in an area to form a group to perform a mission, receiving an acceptance of the collaboration request to join the group wherein the group includes a plurality of vehicles, cooperating in assigning leading functions for the group to one or more of the plurality of vehicles in the group, cooperating in mission negotiations for the group, cooperating in determining a formation for the group, and cooperating in generating a trajectory for the group. The vehicles in the group are operated in accordance with the determined formation and generated trajectory.

Systems and methods for collaboration between autonomous vehicles

A vehicle braking system including a brake pedal in communication with a wheel brake, a brake actuation system, a braking system controller, an on-board driver communication system, and a controller is described. Parameters associated with a braking request, a brake actuation command and vehicle operation are monitored during each braking event, and segmented the into parameters associated with a static portion of the braking event and parameters associated with a dynamic portion of each braking event, evaluate the parameters associated with the static portion of the braking event and evaluate the parameters associated with the dynamic portion of the braking event, and assess a state of health of the braking system based upon the evaluation of the parameters. The assessment of the state of health of the braking system is communicated to a vehicle driver via the on-board driver communication system.

Method and apparatus for monitoring a vehicle braking system

A method of isolating fault in an electric motor assisted braking system of a vehicle includes calculating a value for each of a plurality of fault signature components and comparing each of the calculated values of the plurality of fault signature components to a respective threshold value for each fault signature component. The method also includes automatically executing a control action to indicate a detected fault of the electric motor assisted braking system in response to at least one of the calculated values of the plurality of fault signature components exceeding a respective threshold value.

Systems and methods for fault isolation for an electric motor assisted brake system

An electric-vehicle power management system including a processing hardware unit and multiple modules executable by the processing hardware unit. The modules include a calendar module configured to, by way of the processing hardware unit, obtain a user itinerary indicating multiple appointment locations to be visited by a user of an electric vehicle and associated times to visit the appointment locations. The modules also include a routing module configured to, by way of the processing hardware unit, determine optional routes connecting the appointment locations indicated by the itinerary, and a vehicle-energy module configured to, by way of the processing hardware unit, predict states of charge, or changes in state of charge, for the vehicle in connection with the optional routes, yielding state-of-charge predictions. The routing module determines selected routing based on the state-of-charge predictions from the vehicle-energy module. Analogous methods and computer-readable storage devices are also provided.
