A method and apparatus for launching optical pump signals into a disordered gain medium at two points thereby producing a narrow line-width random fiber laser within the disordered gain medium. The optical pump signals are propagated in a direction through the disordered gain medium towards one another. The apparatus may comprise an optical gain fiber having a first end configured to receive a first fiber pump signal and a second end configured to receive a second fiber pump signal such that the first fiber pump signal and the second fiber pump signal propagate within the optical gain fiber in a direction towards one another. An optical loss device is coupled to the optical gain fiber, wherein the optical loss device isolates a narrow line-width random fiber laser signal from a signal generated within the optical gain fiber.

Narrow line-width laser characterization based on bi-directional pumped Brillouin random fiber laser

Kerr phase-interrogator for sensing and signal processing applications

A combined Brillouin gain and loss process has been created in a polarization maintaining optical fiber to realize all-Optical NAND/NOT/AND/OR logic gates in the frequency domain. A model describing the interaction of a Stokes, anti-Stokes and continuous wave, and two acoustic waves inside a fiber, ranging in length from 350 m-2300 m, was used to theoretically model the gates. Through the optimization of the gain and loss process, switching contrasts of 20-88% have been achieved, under different configurations. Experimental setups for NAND/NOT/AND/OR optical logic gates have been described. A method and system for designing the all-optical logic gates have been also provided.

Frequency stabilized coherent brillouin random fiber laser

A method and apparatus for producing single mode random fiber ring laser by inducing random distributed feedback in a short section of the fiber ring to thereby enable single mode lasing while reducing frequency jitter and relative intensity noise. The random distributed feedback maybe achieved through deep refractive index modulation at a series of randomly distributed laser-irradiated points inscribed along the length of the induced random distributed feedback fiber. The laser-processed random distributed feedback fiber maybe incorporated into the fiber ring in conjunction with a variable optical attenuator and band pass optical filter for enhancing the single mode operation.

Frequency-stabilized random distributed feedback fiber ring laser with low intensity noise

An optical phase modulator based on the principles of stimulated Brillouin scattering is disclosed. The optical phase modulator uses a pump wave and a probe wave counte-propagating in an optical fiber, whose frequencies are chosen such that a difference thereof differs from a resonant Brillouin frequency of the optical fiber. The pump wave is amplitude modulated prior to injecting into the optical fiber, causing phase modulation of the probe wave inside and at the exit from the optical fiber. Alternatively, the probe wave can be amplitude modulated, thereby causing a phase modulation of the pump wave. In the embodiments of the invention, the pump wave is a continuous wave, and the probe wave is a pulse Stokes wave or an anti-Stokes wave. A corresponding optical network using the phase modulator is also disclosed.

Method for optical phase modulation, optical phase modulator and optical network using the same

A distributed Brillouin sensor system is provided. The system has two distributed feedback (DFB) lasers, which are locked at the Brillouin frequency of the optical fiber through offset locking method by coupler splitting into two parts. The split parts are sent to two photodiodes, the outputs of which are sent to a mixer. A PID controller means follows the mixer and a current controller follows the PID controller. The lasers have a wavelength of 1550 nm. The PID controller locks the frequency difference. An optical delay line is used to produce the frequency tuning of the two DFB lasers around the Brillouin frequency of the optical fibers. The lock-in amplifier is used to keep the DC level of the optical modulator at minimum.
