Systems and devices are disclosed herein for absorbing unwanted target sounds. In one example, an acoustic scatterer for absorbing a target sound includes a housing defining a plurality of channels having an open end and a terminal end. The terminal ends of the plurality of channels are separate from each other and extend along a length of the housing. The acoustic scatterer also includes one or more spacers subdividing the plurality of channels along the length of the housing. In another example, a system for absorbing a target sound includes a plurality of acoustic scatterers, each having a housing that defines a plurality of channels having an open end and a terminal end. The terminal ends of the plurality of channels are separate from each other and extend along a length of the housing. The plurality of acoustic scatterers are stacked on top of each other in a lengthwise direction.

Elongated sound isolation devices and systems

A flexural wave absorption system may include a pair of resonators disposed on the structure and separated from each other by a separation distance. The pair of resonators are arranged on the structure in a direction substantially similar to the direction of the flexural wave acting on the structure. As to the separation distance, this distance may be approximately one-quarter of the wavelength of the flexural wave acting on the structure.

A method for beaming sound waves includes introducing sound waves into a phononic crystal in a first direction. The phononic crystal has an array of C-shaped structures oriented so that a neck of each of the C-shaped structures is facing the same general direction. The sound waves are beamed in the direction in which the neck of each of the C-shaped structures is facing so that the sound waves are beamed from the phononic crystal in a second direction that is different from the first direction.

A multi-layered material is provided for shielding low-frequency electromagnetic waves. The multi-layered material may include a plurality of repeating sets of alternating layers of materials. Each repeating set of alternating layers may include an electrically conductive layer and a magnetic layer including a continuous layer of a magnetic material. The multi-layered material is generally configured to shield electromagnetic waves having a frequency of less than about 1 MHz. In various aspects, the electrically conductive layer may include a conductive metal layer, or a two-dimensional transitional metal carbide. The multi-layered material may be provided as a thin film, or can be shaped or sized as flakes for use with a resin composite that is deposited via a spray application technique.

The at least one acoustic scatterer has an opening and at least one channel. The sound absorbing structure may be configured to absorb sound waves at a certain frequency generated by a noise source. The certain frequency may be substantially similar to the resonant frequency of the at least one acoustic scatterer.

A sound isolating wall assembly includes a plurality of walls defining a space between the plurality of walls. At least one acoustic scatterer is disposed within the space between the plurality of walls. The at least one acoustic scatterer has an opening and at least one channel. The at least one channel has a channel open end and a channel terminal end, with the channel open end being in fluid communication with the opening.

Sound isolating wall assembly having at least one acoustic scatterer

An acoustic structure for beaming soundwaves from a first direction toward a second direction, may include a plurality of phononic crystals. The plurality of phononic crystals have an outer border, an internal cavity and a channel extending between the outer border and the internal cavity, wherein the channel defines an opening within the outer border. The phononic crystals are disposed such that the opening faces the second direction. Soundwaves from the first direction are beamed to the second direction by the plurality of phononic crystals.

An acoustic structure includes a plate and at least one acoustic scatterer having a resonant frequency and coupled to a side of the plate. The at least one acoustic scatterer has an opening, a first channel and a second channel. The first channel has a first channel open end and a first channel terminal end with the first channel open end being in fluid communication with the opening. The second channel has a second channel open end and a second channel terminal end with the second channel open end being in fluid communication with the opening. The first channel terminal end and the second channel terminal end are separate from one another.

Acoustic structure for sound absorption and improved sound transmission loss

A sound isolation device includes an acoustic scatterer that has an acoustic monopole response and an acoustic dipole response. The acoustic dipole response and the acoustic monopole response of the acoustic scatterer may have substantially similar resonant frequencies. The device may include a plurality of acoustic scatters forming an array of equally spaced apart acoustic scatterers.
