The invention provides a hollow nano-particle comprising a crosslinked shell and a void core; and a preparation method thereof. The hollow nano-particle may be used in rubber composition, tire product, and pharmaceutical delivery system etc.

Compositions and methods for preparing at least partially hollow nanoparticles having an outer shell comprising a one or more molecules and/or residues derived from a metal soap, where the nanoparticles each comprise a continuous inner void space that averages at least 10 percent of the volume of each of the nanoparticles. Such at least partially hollow nanoparticles can be employed in a variety of applications including, but not limited to, tire manufacturing.

This invention relates to rubber compositions having a low aromatic-oil content, or no aromatic oils at all. The rubber composition contains a diene rubber, one or more fillers, and a low molecular weight, functionalized polymer than has the ability to interact with the fillers and act and as a replacement to the aromatic oil. The rubber compositions so produced may be used in tread rubbers and have exhibited good snow/wet traction properties and low rolling resistance.

In addition, a method of making a rubber composition includes combining a polar solvent, a base, and a carboxylic acid and mixing these to form a Solution A. A source of metal ions in solution is added to Solution A, whereby mixing forms Product A. The metal in the source of metal ions is selected from the group consisting of metals with an oxidation state of +3 or +4. The product is isolated from Solution A and then is combined with a diene rubber composition to form a useful article, such as the tread of a tire.

A method is provided for synthesizing a core-shell nanoparticle that includes the following steps: providing a polymeric seed (in a solvent) that includes mono-vinyl monomer cross-liniked with a cross-linking agent to form the core of the nanoparticle, the core has an average diameter of from about nanometers to about 10,000 nanometers, and the core has polymer chains with living ends; adding a stabilizer to stabilize the seed and prevent the seed from precipitating out of solution; and grafting a shell species onto the living ends of the core to form the shell of the nanoparticle. A core-first synthesized nanoparticle, along with a rubber composition and tire product are also provided.

A method of making a tire component includes the steps of: combining a solvent and a multiple carboxylic, phosphonic, phosphoric, sulfuric, or sulfonic acid, or mixtures thereof, and mixing to form solution A; adding a source of metal ions to solution A and mixing to form a product A, the metal being selected from the metals having an oxidation state of +3 or +4, whereby product A includes a multiple-acid-derived metal soap; combining the multiple-acid-derived metal soap with a diene rubber; and molding and vulcanizing the rubber composition into a tire component.
