A flexible sensor unit is embedded in a tire. The flexible sensor unit includes a plurality of individual circuit boards. Each circuit board includes at least one electronic component. The at least one electronic component includes a radio frequency identification integrated circuit, a microcontroller unit, at least one sensor, a power source and a boost converter. Each one of a plurality of electrically conductive flexible connecting ribbons extends between the circuit boards. An end ribbon is electrically connected to at least one of the circuit boards. An antenna is disposed on the end ribbon. The antenna transmits data from the at least one sensor, as processed by the microcontroller unit, and identification data from the radio frequency identification integrated circuit, to an external reader.

An encapsulated sensor unit is embedded in a tire. The encapsulated sensor unit includes a sensor portion and an antenna portion. A first encapsulating layer is disposed about the sensor portion, and not about the antenna portion. A second encapsulating layer is disposed about the first encapsulating layer and the antenna portion. A third encapsulating layer is disposed about the second encapsulating layer.

The subject invention is directed towards tire components comprising rubber compositions comprising (1) about 2 phr to about 45 phr of a trans-1,4-isoprene-butadiene copolymer which has about 4 weight percent to about 16 weight percent butadiene repeat units and from about 84 weight percent to about 96 weight percent isoprene repeat units, wherein the trans-1,4-isoprene-butadiene copolymer has a Mooney ML 1+4 viscosity which is within the range of about 35 to about 80; and (2) about 55 phr to about 98 phr of at least one other elastomer, preferably a diene based elastomer. The most preferred tire components are those which contain cord reinforcements and require adequate green strength to enhance the tire building and shaping process to maintain cord integrity in the final cured tire.

Preparation of a rubber composition containing a dispersion of aligned exfoliated graphite platelets. Such rubber composition is prepared by a method comprised of a sequential combination of concentrated solvent or dry masterbatching of elastomer and exfoliated graphite platelets, followed by blending the masterbatch (after removing the solvent from the solvent based masterbatch) with additional elastomer(s) and then followed by processing the resulting rubber composition to align the dispersed exfoliated graphite platelets in a substantially parallel relation to each other. The invention further relates to a tire containing a component comprised of such rubber composition containing a dispersion of aligned exfoliated graphite platelets prepared by the aforesaid method.
