The present embodiments relate to a PMR write head with a trailing shield that comprises a FeCoNiM composition. The FeCoNiM composition can be formed via an electroplating process by adding Fe, Co, Niand a transition metal salt to an aqueous solution comprised of other additives in an electroplating cell that has an Ni or Co as the anode. The plated HD magnetic material as the trailing shield in a PMR writer can minimize a wide area track erasure (WATE). Further, a high moment high damping shield can lower bit error rate (BER) and increase aerial density capability (ADC) of the write head.

Electroplating of high damping material for trailing shield in a perpendicular magnetic recording writer

A PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording) write head configured for thermally assisted magnetic recording (TAMR) and microwave assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) is made adaptive to writing at different frequencies by inserting thin layers of magnetic material into the material filling the side gaps (SG) between the magnetic pole (MP) and the side shields (SS). At high frequencies, the thin magnetic layers saturate and lower the magnetic potential of the bulky side shields.

A PMR writer is disclosed wherein a hot seed layer (HS) made of a 19-24 kilogauss (kG) magnetic material is formed between a gap layer and a 10-16 kG magnetic layer in the side shields, and between the leading gap and a 16-19 kG magnetic layer in the leading shield to improve the track field gradient and cross-track field gradient while maintaining write-ability. The HS is from 10 to 100 nm thick and has a first side facing the write pole with a height of &#x2266;0.15 micron, and a second side facing a main pole flared side that may extend to a full side shield height of &#x2266;0.5 micron. The trailing shield has a second hot seed layer on the write gap and a 16-19 kG magnetic layer that contacts the 10-16 kG side shield magnetic layer thereby forming an all wrap around (AWA) shield configuration.

High moment side shield design for area density improvement of perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) writer

A Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) writer is disclosed with an all wrap around (AWA) shield design in which one or more of the leading shield, second trailing shield, and side shields consist of a high damping (HD) magnetic material having a damping constant &#x2267;0.04. A first trailing shield between the write gap and second trailing shield is a 19-24 kG hot seed layer. The HD magnetic layer may be FeNiRe with a Re content of 3 to 15 atomic %. Preferably, the HD magnetic layer has a coercivity &#x3c;50 Oe and is a 10-19 kG material. One or both of the main pole leading and trailing sides may be tapered. Wide adjacent track erasure is minimized while area density capability is maintained. In other embodiments, the HD magnetic material may be one of FeNiM, FeNM, FeCoM, or FeCoNiM where M is a 3d, 4d, or 5d transition metal.

Perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) write shield design with minimized wide adjacent track erasure (WATE)

A PMR writer is disclosed wherein a hot seed layer (HS) made of a 19-24 kilogauss (kG) magnetic material is formed between a side gap and a 10-16 kG magnetic layer in the side shields, and between a 16-19 kG magnetic layer and the leading gap in the leading shield to improve Hy_grad and Hy_grad_x while maintaining write-ability. The HS is from 10 to 100 nm thick and has a first side facing the write pole with a height of &#x2266;0.15 micron, and a second side facing a main pole flared side that may extend to a full side shield height of &#x2266;0.5 micron. First and second sides may form a continuous curve or the a double tapered design where first and second sides have different angles with respect to a center plane. The side shield design described herein is especially beneficial for side gaps of 20-60 nm.

A magnetic layer that may serve as a top pole layer and bottom pole layer in a magnetic write head is disclosed. The magnetic layer has a composition represented by FeCoNiVin which w, x, y, and z are the atomic % of Fe, Co, Ni, and V, respectively, and where w is between about 60 and 85, x is between about 10 and 30, y is between 0 and about 20, z is between about 0.1 and 3, and wherein w+x+y+z=100. An electroplating process having a plating current density of 3 to 30 mA/cmis used to deposit the magnetic layer and involves an electrolyte solution with a small amount of VOSOwhich is the V source. The resulting magnetic layer has a magnetic saturation flux density Bgreater than 1.9 Telsa and a resistivity &#x3c1; higher than 70 &#x3bc;ohms-cm.

Electrodeposition of FeCoNiV films with high resistivity and high saturation magnetization

A laminated high moment film with a non-AFC configuration is disclosed that can serve as a seed layer for a main pole layer or as the main pole layer itself in a PMR writer. The laminated film includes a plurality of (B/M) stacks where B is an alignment layer and M is a high moment layer. Adjacent (B/M) stacks are separated by an amorphous layer that breaks the magnetic coupling between adjacent high moment layers and reduces remanence in a hard axis direction while maintaining a high magnetic moment and achieving low values for Hch, Hce, and Hk. The amorphous material layer may be made of an oxide, nitride, or oxynitride of one or more of Hf, Zr, Ta, Al, Mg, Zn, Ti, Cr, Nb, or Si, or may be Hf, Zr, Ta, Nb, CoFeB, CoB, FeB, or CoZrNb. Alignment layers are FCC soft ferromagnetic materials or non-magnetic FCC materials.

Electrodeposition of FeCoNiV films with high resistivity and high saturation magnetization for magnetic head fabrication

A process is described for the fabrication, through electrodeposition, of FeCoNi(x=60-71, y=25-35, z=0-5) films that have, in their as-deposited form, a saturation magnetization of at least 24 kG and a coercivity of less than 0.3 Oe. A key feature is the addition of aryl sulfinates to the plating bath along with a suitable seed layer.

Electroplated magnetic film for read-write applications

A process for achieving tighter reader and writer track width control is disclosed. The write gap layer is used as the plating seed on which the upper pole is electro-formed. This allows the write gap layer to then be deposited through a precisely controllable process such as sputtering. Since less material needs to be removed during pole trimming, a thinner layer of photoresist may be used, resulting in improved dimensional control.

Process of making CD uniformity in high track density recording head

For high track density recording, tighter reader and writer track width control are essential. This has been achieved by using a plated NiPd write gap which is self-aligned with a plated 23 KG pole material. Heat dissipation by the writer is thus improved since alumina has been replaced with nonmagnetic metal materials, such as Ru, leading to less pole tip protrusion which in turn leads to better writer track width control
