A method of applying a protective coating with improved adhesion on an aluminum alloy component includes first pretreating the surface of a component by depositing a sacrificial protective immersion layer using a zincating or similar process. Portions of the protective immersion layer as well as portions of the underlying aluminum alloy substrate are then electrolytically etched off in an ionic liquid. A protective aluminum coating is then electrodeposited on the component in an ionic liquid.

An assembly for removing a desired portion of one or more layers of paint or another coating from a designated area is provided including a pad soaked with a chemical paint remover and an adhesive layer arranged about the pad configured to couple the assembly to the designated area. A removable first protective layer is positioned upwardly adjacent and is coupled to the adhesive layer. A flexible support layer is positioned adjacent the adhesive layer and the pad, opposite the removable first protective layer. A heat pad is arranged downwardly adjacent the flexible support layer. The heat pad is configured to control a microclimate adjacent the assembly when activated. A removable second protective layer is coupled to a surface of the heat pad. Removal of the second protective layer activates the heat pad.

An illustrative method of making an elevator load bearing member having at least one elongated tension member at least partially covered by a jacket includes mixing a flame retardant with a polymer material. The flame retardant is selected from a group consisting of (i) a halogen-free melamine based intumescent comprising melamine cyanurate, melamine-phosphate, melamine pyrophosphate or melamine polyphosphate in an amount up to about 20% by weight of the thermoplastic polymer or (ii) a filled polymer having a nanoscale filler chemically bonded to a matrix phase. Applying the mixed flame retardant and polymer material to the tension member forms a jacket of a desired shape.

A method of depositing aluminum onto a substrate is disclosed. In this method, the substrate is disposed as cathode in an electrochemical cell with an anode and a liquid electrodeposition composition comprising an ionic liquid and a source of aluminum, and aluminum is electroplated onto the substrate. Residual water content in the electroplating bath is controlled by exposure to light in the presence of a photo-oxidation catalyst to decompose the water or species associated with water.

A method for electroplating aluminum metal on a magnesium alloy includes providing an Lewis acidic ionic liquid having dissolved species of an aluminum metal salt; pre-treating a surface of the magnesium alloy including subjecting the surface of the magnesium alloy to a reverse current etching in the ionic liquid; electroplating the aluminum metal on the surface using the ionic liquid as the electrolyte; and subjecting the surface of the magnesium alloy to a post-treatment including neutralization rinsing in a rinsing solvent solution.

A method of making a passenger conveyor handrail includes forming a drive member having a plurality of longitudinally spaced drive surfaces. The drive member has a longitudinal stiffness for maintaining a desired spacing between the drive surfaces. The drive member is inserted into a molding device. A gripping surface portion of the handrail is formed using the molding device such that the gripping surface portion and the drive member are secured together. Another method includes forming a belt drive member having a plurality of teeth that establish a plurality of longitudinally spaced drive surfaces. The belt has a longitudinal stiffness for maintaining a desired spacing between the drive surfaces. Each of the teeth extends across an entire width of the belt. The belt is secured to a gripping surface portion of the handrail.

A door assembly has a door header mounted on a frame defining a doorway, a door movably supported on the frame, and a track including at least one supporting surface along at least one side of the track. The track is secured to the door header. The assembly has at least one roller that is adapted to roll along the track. The roller has a rim portion adjacent a hub portion, and a tire material surrounding the rim portion that contacts the track. The roller is at least partially covered with a thermal barrier between the tire material and at least one of the rim portion and the hub portion to prevent heat transfer to the tire material.
