An intake device for a gas turbine engine includes a snorkel and a particle separator. The snorkel is configured to be mounted to a panel defining at least a portion of a gas flow path within the gas turbine engine. The snorkel includes a tubular body extending between a closed end and an open end opposite the closed end. The snorkel further includes an inlet aperture formed through the tubular body adjacent the closed end. At least a portion of the snorkel is configured to be disposed within the gas flow path. The particle separator is mounted to the snorkel downstream of the inlet aperture. The particle separator includes at least one gas flow passage extending between a flow inlet and a flow outlet. The at least one gas flow passage is configured to remove particulate matter from the at least one gas flow passage upstream of the flow outlet.

A gas turbine engine includes an intake device. The intake device includes a snorkel and a filter case. The snorkel includes a tubular body and an inlet aperture. The tubular body extends between a closed end and an open end opposite the closed end. The inlet aperture is formed through the tubular body proximate the closed end. The tubular body forms a first portion of a gas flow path for a bleed gas from the inlet aperture to the open end. The filter case is connected to the tubular body. The filter case extends between a first end and a second end. The filter case includes a sidewall extending from the first end to the second end. The sidewall surrounds a filter cavity. The filter case is configured to receive the bleed gas from the open end of the tubular body. The filter case and the snorkel form a unitary component.

Apparatus for removing particulate matter from bleed gas

An intake device for a gas turbine engine includes a snorkel and a housing. The snorkel includes a tubular body and an inlet aperture. The tubular body extends between a closed end and an open end opposite the closed end. The inlet aperture is formed through the tubular body proximate the closed end. The housing is mounted to the snorkel. The housing includes an inner wall, an outer wall, a side wall, a settling chamber, and an outlet tube. The inner wall is adjacent the snorkel. The outer wall is opposite the inner wall. The side wall extends from the inner wall to the outer wall. The settling chamber is within the side wall between the inner wall and the outer wall. The settling chamber is fluidly coupled with the open end. The outlet tube extends through the housing from the settling chamber to an exterior of the housing.

A method and apparatus using a cooler to selectively cool P3 air directed into an impeller rear cavity of a gas turbine engine during engine high power levels, may include connection of the cooler to a low pressure compressor bleed-off valve apparatus that is modulated to be closed during engine high power levels to create a pressure differential over the bleed-off valve apparatus, to drive a stream of low pressure compressor air as a cooling work fluid under such pressure differential to selectively flow through the cooler.

The combined cooling system uses a single heat exchanger to cool both engine air for use in an engine system and aircraft air for use in an aircraft system. More particularly, a bleed air path leads from the compressor stage to the heat exchanger where it is placed in thermal exchange contact with a flow of cooling air coming from a cooling path. From an outlet end of the heat exchanger, the bleed air splits into two paths: an aircraft air path leading to at least one aircraft system such as an Environmental control system (ECS), a wind de-icing system or the like, and an engine air path leading to at least one engine system such as a buffer air system for pressurizing the bearing cavities.

Cooling system for engine and aircraft air

A system for cooling a generator mounted in the tail-cone of an engine. The system comprises a fairing, which receives through an inlet thereof air from a bypass duct and directs the bypass air towards a cavity of the tail-cone for cooling the generator. The bypass air is then expelled through an outlet of a support strut positioned in fluid communication with the tail-cone cavity. The fairing inlet and the strut outlet are both positioned in a plane substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal plane of the engine. In this manner, circulation of the bypass air through the fairing, the tail-cone cavity, and the strut may be achieved. The bypass air directed through the fairing further enables cooling of service lines accommodated in the fairing. A lobe mixer is further used to direct the fairing and shield the latter from core exhaust.

A cooling system in an aircraft gas turbine engine includes a heat exchanger positioned within an annular nacelle space surrounding a bypass duct of the engine. The heat exchanger has a radial coolant passage extending between the bypass duct and ambient air surrounding the nacelle, and a flow passage extending substantially normal to the radial passage for direction of a fluid to be cooled therethrough. A configuration of this nature may assist in defining a no-flow length of the heat exchanger in a third direction normal to the other two mentioned directions, which may allow for improved performance within a given radial envelope.

An internal heating arrangement for a centrifugal impeller for a gas turbine engine is provided having at least one heating passage extending through into the rotor for directing air bled from the rotor exit along the backface and forwardly through the impeller.

A method of minimizing oil consumption in a gas turbine engine, by avoiding reliance on air intake into the engine oil circuit for bearing chamber oil sealing purposes. The engine oil circuit has bearing chambers with hydropad seals between the shaft and bearing chamber. During engine operation the ring rotates to cast oil radially outwardly from the shaft axis toward the outer periphery of the bearing chamber under centrifugal force, independent of any gas pressure differential across the sealing surfaces of the hydropad seal.

Method and device for minimizing oil consumption in a gas turbine engine

In a turbine engine, low temperature air is diverted from a low pressure section of the compressor section of the engine to cool the high pressure turbine of the engine. Low pressure air is diverted from the compressor section, and its pressure is thereafter increased. Preferably, the pressure is increased in an intermediate cavity in the engine, where rotational energy of the diverted air is converted to static pressure by way of an obstruction that converts dynamic head of the air in the cavity into static pressure.

A turbine engine having improved high pressure turbine cooling is disclosed. In the engine, relatively cool intermediate pressure (P2x) air is diverted from a region of a compressor section and over a high work turbine blade at a lower static pressure than the diverted air to cool the blade. Advantageously, as the diverted air is relatively cool, use of a conventional TOBI nozzle may be eliminated. Similarly, showerheads on the blade may be eliminated. As well, the diverted air may conveniently be used to seal a rear bearing compartment within the engine.

Turbine engine having improved high pressure turbine cooling

An improved rotary engine, engine lining and engine casing and lining combination are disclosed. The engine is preferable a turbofan engine and includes a fan blade, rotatably mounted within a generally cylindrical casing for rotation about a lengthwise extending central axis. An annular lining is mounted within the casing between a tip of the fan blade and the casing. The lining seals the tip of the fan blade within the casing. The lining includes a brush seal that extends around an inner circumference of the casing, and has a plurality of bristles that extend radially inward from the seal. A retaining membrane extends around the brush seal, preventing the bristles from extending substantially in a radial direction from the brush seal. The retaining membrane is adapted to release the bristles to extend radially inward to occupy a region between the tip of the fan blade and the casing upon a radial excursion of the fan blade. The bristles, once released, at least partially seal the tip of the fan blade and the casing reducing air recirculation at the blade tip.

A bleed valve is in fluid communication with the compressor fluid flow path and the bypass fluid flow path whereby a piston extends radially of the valve and includes a piston head radially remote from the compressor fluid flow path. A pneumatic chamber surrounds a portion of the piston head, and air from a source downstream of the impeller is introduced into the chamber. The piston including a valving member and a rigid sleeve connecting the piston head to the valving means opens or closes the communication between the compressor flow path and the bypass flow path. A precompressed spring is associated with the piston to normally urge the piston radially outwardly relative to the compressor fluid flow path to a valve open position, and when the pneumatic pressure in the chamber surrounding the piston head overcomes the precompressed spring, the valve is closed.

An air distribution system for an impeller rear cavity, including an air bleed at the compressor impeller tip for bleeding pressurized air into the rear cavity, and a second stream of P3 air is passed into the rear cavity area after having been cooled by a heat exchanger. The mixing of the cooled P3 air with the bleed air from the impeller tip reduces the temperature of the pressurized air in the rear cavity to reduce degradation of the impeller as well as to provide a flow of cooling air for the central bearing.

A modified turbine engine design in which control of the forward load on a thrust bearing is improved, while reducing or eliminating the need for the use of a balance piston is disclosed. The turbine engine has a longitudinal axis and comprises, a compressor for pressurizing gases in the engine. The impeller has an impeller rear face and a tip. The engine further comprises a shaft mounted to a thrust bearing for rotation about the axis. The impeller is fixed to the shaft for rotation therewith. A cavity fixed within the engine casing is defined at least by the impeller rear face and is in communication with the pressurized gases at the impeller tip. The engine further comprises a bleed in communication with both the cavity and the pressurized gases, so that the cavity is pressurized by the pressurized gases from the impeller tip and the bleed, thereby loading the impeller rear face to load the thrust bearing through the shaft. Preferably, the pressurized gases from the bleed reduce flow swirl in the cavity and thereby increase the pressure in the cavity.
