A slider for a data storage device may include a trailing pad comprising a recording head, an outer surface, and an inner surface, wherein the outer surface is at the media-adjacent level and the inner surface is at the first recessed level. The slider may further include particle-blocking structure comprising a hole in the inner surface of the trailing pad, wherein a bottom surface of the hole is at the second recessed level, and an island blocker situated within the hole, wherein a media-facing surface of the island blocker is at the media-adjacent level, wherein the recording head is situated between the island blocker and a trailing edge of the slider. Disclosed herein are sliders with segmented front bars, methods of manufacturing them, and data storage devices comprising them. In some embodiments, a slider comprises a segmented front bar, a leading pad, a shallow-edge surface, and a cavity. The segmented front bar includes a plurality of slots situated substantially perpendicular to the leading-edge surface of the slider. The leading pad is situated between the leading-edge surface of the slider and a trailing edge of the slider and is recessed from the segmented front bar. The cavity abuts the segmented front bar and is situated between the segmented front bar and the leading pad. The shallow-etch surface is situated between the cavity and the leading pad. A maximum depth of the plurality of slots relative to a non-recessed surface of the segmented front bar is less than a depth of the cavity relative to the non-recessed surface of the segmented front bar.

Segmented front bar for particle robustness

Disclosed herein are embodiments of sliders in which the length of the slider is less than or equal to its width. Also disclosed are data storage devices (e.g., hard disk drives) comprising such sliders. The sliders may include one or more air-bearing surface features to compensate for the lower aspect ratio and to meet performance targets (fly height, roll stiffness, etc.). Such features may include, for example, a trailing-edge pad (which may include an efficiency-flattening hole), a first cavity between a first side of the trailing-edge pad and a first side edge, and a non-intersecting second cavity between a second side of the trailing-edge pad and a second side edge. A slider may also or alternatively include a leading pad and, in some embodiments, a particle trapping structure between the leading pad and the slider's leading edge.
