A cooling system includes at least one coolant-conducting heat sink configured to cool a battery. The cooling system also includes further coolant-conducting components including at least one conduit configured to feed coolant to the at least one heat sink and at least one conduit configured to carry coolant away from the at least one heat sink. At least some of the further coolant-conducting components are at least partially surrounded by at least one sheathing element, such that a closed volume space is formed between the at least one sheathing element and the at least some of the further coolant-conducting components.

A battery system includes a plurality of battery cells and a temperature-control element that is thermally conductively connected to the battery cells via a temperature-control surface. The temperature-control element has a temperature-control channel in an interior of the temperature-control element. The temperature-control channel is routed on the forward flow side via an inlet and on the return flow side via an outlet from the temperature-control element. A bypass is connected to the temperature-control channel via a dividing node and a merging node with the dividing node being arranged closer to the inlet than the merging node. A method for controlling the temperature of at least one battery element, a battery, and a motor vehicle that has the battery includes specifying a temperature value, and determining the cool-down behavior of the at least one battery element beginning at a first temperature. A first point in time, at which the battery temperature will have reached or fallen below the temperature value, is determined by evaluating the cool-down behavior. Subsequently, a second point in time for a beginning of the charging or discharging of the at least one battery element is determined. If tmin&#x3c;t_end, heat is applied to the at least one battery element in such a manner that the battery temperature at the second point in time is higher than or equal to the temperature value. The method can be used to avoid damage to the battery element during charging and discharging of the battery element.

A temperature control method and a battery system create an optimal temperature range for operating a battery. The battery cells of the battery lie in several separate modules that are integrated in a temperature control circuit. Heat is increased stepwise in a heating phase in which only one first module is heated by means of a temperature control medium, the medium being active in the temperature control circuit and being heated by means of a heating element. The heat that is generated during the operation of at least the first module is used to heat at least one further module.
