A method and apparatus for generating electrical power, including providing a generator configured to generate a first voltage, providing a voltage converter configured to operably down-convert the first voltage output to a second voltage output to provide a first amount of power to a set of electrical loads, and changing a power demand for at least a subset of the set of electrical loads, wherein the changed power demand increases the power demanded. To meet the increased power demand, the voltage converter is controlled to operably down-convert the first voltage output to the second voltage output to provide a second amount of power to the set of electrical loads. The second amount of power is greater than the first amount of power. The power-generating capabilities of the generator are not modified between providing the first amount of power and providing the second amount of power.

Method and power distribution system for generating electrical power

A method for manufacturing a main rotor for a generator is provided. The method includes printing at least part of a rotor shaft by a three-dimensional printing process. The step of printing at least part of the rotor shaft includes printing a plurality of closed outlets and a plurality of open outlets. A rotor core is printed by the three-dimensional printing process. The step of printing the rotor core includes printing a plurality of liquid coolant conduits that extend through the rotor core and fluidly connecting the plurality of liquid coolant conduits to the plurality of closed openings.

Wet and dry cavity generator systems and methods of manufacturing the same

A rotor assembly comprises a rotor core comprising a first end and an opposing second end, and an outwardly facing peripheral surface having a set of rotor teeth projecting outwardly therefrom to define a set of rotor slots therebetween. Each rotor tooth can comprise a first rotor tooth wall, an opposing second rotor tooth wall, and a distal tip between the first rotor tooth wall and second rotor tooth wall. Each respective rotor slot can be defined by a respective first rotor tooth wall of a first rotor tooth, and a respective second rotor tooth wall of a second rotor tooth, and includes a first rotor core conduit extending axially along a length of the first rotor tooth. The first rotor core conduit can comprise a first rotor core conduit inlet at the rotor core first end and a first rotor core conduit inlet at the rotor core second end, the rotor core conduit defining a first taper that is narrower at first rotor core conduit inlet than the first rotor core conduit outlet.

Method and apparatus for cooling a rotor assembly

A rotating rectifier associated with an electric machine is provided. In one example aspect, a rotating rectifier includes a diode. The diode can be one diode of a stage of diodes. The rotating rectifier can also include a connection lead, such an exciter connection lead. The connection lead has a diode contact segment in contact with the diode and a first spring segment and a second spring segment positioned on opposite sides of the diode contact segment. The first spring segment and the second spring segment can be positioned adjacent to the diode contact segment. The first spring segment and the second spring segment each have one or more spring laps. The spring laps can be non-planar spring laps, such as undulating spring laps.

Flexible mechanical support system for diodes in a rotating rectifier

An electrical filter circuit is disclosed. The circuit includes a first input line and a second input line. A first transmission line is coupled electrically in series at a first node with a first output line, and an inductor is coupled electrically in series between the first input line and the first transmission line. The filter also includes a second transmission line having a first impedance coupled to the first node. The second input line is coupled electrically in series at a second node with a second output line. A third transmission line is coupled to the second node, and a capacitor is coupled electrically in series between the second transmission line and the third transmission line. The first output line has a second impedance that is greater than the first impedance.

Circuit and method for an electrical filter

A method and apparatus for a rotor assembly. The rotor assembly includes a rotor core having a rotatable shaft and defining at least one rotor post, a winding wound around the post that defines an end turn, and at least one coolant conduit defined in part by an end support and in a thermally conductive relationship with a portion of the winding.

Disclosed within are a structure and method for forming a component for a rotor to be used in an electric machine. The formed rotor components can include a rotor assembly or rotor shaft. The rotor assembly can include a plurality of poles spaced about a rotor core. The plurality of poles can include a pole shoe or pole body. Quasi-laminations that can result in a unitary structure that includes support structures can be used to form all or a portion of the pole shoe or pole body.

A method for manufacturing a dual-structured aircraft engine starting and generating apparatus is provided. The method includes printing a housing using a three-dimensional printing process including a main machine portion and an exciter portion for receiving at least part of a generator system. Printing the housing includes printing a cooling jacket portion comprising one or more cooling passages that is a monolithic part of a sidewall of the housing.

Methods of forming a dual-structured aircraft engine starter/generator apparatuses

A rotor assembly comprising rotatable element defining a periphery, a first set of elements defining magnetic pole regions and a second set of elements defining interpolar regions that alternately placed about the periphery. The rotor assembly further comprising a containment band circumscribing the first set of elements and the second set of elements. The containment band defining a first set of material and a second set of material, with each overlying at least a portion of the first set of elements or the second set of elements.

A common-mode voltage cancellation (CMVC) circuit, is disclosed. The circuit includes a set of input lines arranged to receive a respective phase voltage, and a set of output lines arranged to provide a respective output phase voltage. The circuit further includes a set of coupled inductors, each having a respective primary winding and secondary winding coupled in signal communication at a respective upstream end to a respective input line to receive a respective phase voltage therefrom, each respective phase voltage having a common-mode voltage component. Each primary winding being coupled at a respective downstream end to ground, and each secondary winding being coupled in series between the respective input line and a respective output line. The circuit includes a set of capacitors, each capacitor being electrically coupled to a respective input line and in series with a respective primary winding of the set of coupled inductors.

An electric machine assembly having a main machine stator core having at least one stator post, a set of stator windings wound about the at least one stator post and having a first end and an opposing second end, a coolant inlet housing defining an inlet passage, a coolant outlet housing defining an outlet passage, proximate to the coolant inlet housing, and wherein the coolant inlet passage and the coolant outlet passage define a coolant circuit configured to receive a supply of coolant to remove heat generated in the set of stator windings.

A method and assembly of a dry cavity oil cooled electric machine includes a housing, a shaft configured to operably couple with a source of rotational force and rotate about a rotational axis, and an exciter rotor and a permanent magnet generator rotor carried by the shaft, wherein the exciter rotor and the permanent magnet generator rotor rotate relative to the housing, which provides such a construction of dry cavity generators that have high efficiency and high power density.

A permanent magnet generator, includes a cylindrical rotor assembly having a set of circumferentially-spaced permanent magnets arranged at an outer radius of the rotor assembly, and spaced from one another by non-magnetic spacing element, and a stator assembly configured to coaxially receive the rotor assembly. The stator assembly includes a cylindrical stator core, a circumferentially spaced set of posts extending from the stator core and defining a set of stator slots between adjacent posts, and a set of conductive windings wound about the stator slots.

Stator assembly

A method for integrally manufacturing a stator core and a housing for an electrical machine includes printing, by a three-dimensional (3D) printing process, the stator core. In addition, the method includes printing, by the 3D printing process, the housing. In particular, printing the housing occurs contemporaneously with printing the stator core. The method also includes printing, by the 3D printing process, at least one end cap and coupling the at least one end cap to the housing to enclose a cavity defined by the housing.
